Robin,
When Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders first started pushing government-controlled single-payer health care, he was the only politician who would dare put his name on it. It's a signal of how far to the left the Democratic base has moved that he just proposed his "Medicare for all" scheme again, and this time, he's picked up several big name Democratic co-sponsors, including Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris.
Chances are that's just virtual signaling to the left because they know the bill has about as much chance of passing Congress and being signed by Trump as Bernie has of landing a job as a hairdo model. If they had to deal with reality, Sanders and Harris would have to admit that their respective states (Vermont and California) both flirted with single payer but had to drop it because it cost so much more than advertised. In California, it would have cost more than twice the entire current state budget.
Promoting single payer is a way for Democrats to voice solidarity with their constituents without fear that their promises will ever actually become reality. Sort of like how a lot of Senate Republicans repeatedly voted to repeal Obamacare until it counted. These days, it sometimes appears that both sides will fight valiantly and, of course, publicly, only for things they are certain will never actually pass.
Sincerely,
Mike Huckabee

-- A disgraceful Congressman
By Mike Huckabee
Illinois Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez angered veterans after he called White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps General, a "disgrace to his uniform" for working for Trump and backing the end of the DACA program. Kelly blasted Gutierrez with a response worthy of a Marine drill sergeant. But Gutierrez just doubled down on the insult to Kelly's military record, telling the Washington Post, "I don't see [him wearing] a uniform. He's a politician who works for Donald Trump" and "not a general."
Gutierrez might be forgiven if he'd pleaded ignorance, since he's never served in the military. But instead, he pushed the insult further, smearing Kelly as unworthy of the respect due his military service, just because he holds a policy view Gutierrez disagrees with. The linked article has more, along with the good point that if Gutierrez thinks disagreeing with him on DACA makes you a "disgrace to your uniform," does that include all the current active-duty military members who happen to oppose DACA?
Gutierrez is lucky that's it's impossible to be a disgrace to the title of "Congressman."

Hillary lies...
By Mike Huckabee
Hillary Clinton took a break from her "And Then I Blamed…" Tour to insult the female White House Press Secretary (who – full disclosure – happens to be my daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders.) Sarah was asked if Trump plans to read Hillary's book, "What Happened." She replied that she didn't know, but he's already pretty well-versed on what happened, as are most Americans: "Hillary Clinton ran one of the most negative campaigns in history and lost and the last chapter of her public life is going to be now defined by propping up book sales with false and reckless attacks. And I think that that's a sad way for her to continue."
Hillary laughed off the comment on "The View" in that strange, poorly-programmed robot-style laugh of hers, and replied: "I honestly don't pay much attention to what she says. I think unfortunately — and I don't say this with any kind of glee, I'm sad about it, we're not getting the kind of information from this White House that we should have, whether you agree or disagree, whatever your party affiliation might be."
In our house, people were raised to tell the truth, and after a lifetime of dealing with the Clintons in Arkansas, I don't think that can be said about their family. Just in that brief statement alone, she makes at least three claims that have my eyebrows raised to the ceiling: that she "honestly" doesn't pay attention to White House press briefings, especially ones that mention her…that she's "sad" at the thought of a high federal official not being completely honest and transparent with the public (says the woman who deleted 33,000 emails and scrubbed her devices before letting investigators see them)…and that she actually accuses other people of not being trustworthy. Go back and reread Sarah's statement. What part of it isn't true?
I'll be glad when this book tour is over. It seems to be taking longer to pass than Hurricane Irma and comes with a bigger hot air mass.

Protesting clowns
By Mike Huckabee
In New York City, a group of clowns plans to rally outside a theater tonight to protest the horror movie "It" for harming their image and hurting their livelihoods. And on the opposite side of America, at UC-Berkeley, another large group of clowns is planning a protest tonight of the horror of anyone voicing an opinion they disagree with. Biggest difference is that for the clowns at Berkeley, protesting IS their livelihood. Also, they'd probably cheer the violent clown in "It" if you just told them that the kids he targets were fascists.

No to shakedowns
By Mike Huckabee
Here's one of those "once in a blue moon" type stories: on the issue of civil asset forfeiture, I have to side with former Attorney General Eric Holder over Trump AG Jeff Sessions. But at least, I'm not alone. Tuesday, in overwhelming bipartisan votes, the House passed several amendments to block Sessions from rolling back the restrictions Holder put on civil asset forfeitures.
The program might have been instituted with the best of intentions – blocking criminals from profiting off their crimes while helping fund local police and government – but lack of controls on it have turned it into a legalized shake-down racket. There are countless examples of innocent citizens having their lawfully-earned cash and property seized and sometimes never getting it back, even if they aren't convicted, or ever even charged with, a crime.
If we are going to have such asset seizure laws, then they need to be strictly limited and policed to prevent abuse. And no American should ever be subject to having his or her property taken away by the government without due process of law. That's one of our most basic Constitutional rights, and it's heartening to see members of both parties for once coming together to protect it.

News Bits
Remember the "outrage" that was ginned up over President Trump's warning that the leftist history-deniers who are tearing down Confederate statues would soon move on to attacking Washington and Jefferson? Well, he was more than right: they've already targeted Washington and Jefferson, moved onto to Columbus and now, they're even going after Francis Scott Key, writer of the National Anthem. Don't they realize that without the National Anthem, there would be nothing for NFL players to show disrespect to and drive away the fans?

A survey of pastors' spouses found that 60% say their churches don't pay them enough for their families to live off of. So I guess some things haven't changed since I was a pastor. It's nice when your church board believes you're filled with the Holy Spirit, but they should know only Jesus could feed the multitudes with a few loaves and fishes.
