Rabbi Pruzansky Aliya Essay

Bsd

Here is a thoughtful essay by Rabbi Steven Pruzansky, formerly of Teaneck, NJ, who has just made aliyah. Barch Haba! Hatzlacha!

Last week my wife and I made aliya after more than six decades of life in the United States. We are officially Israeli citizens, which affords me the right to criticize the Israeli government without being told to move here if I want to have a say, and the right to denounce American Jews for remaining in the fleshpots of the exile. But I'm going to hold off on both for the time being...

It would be easy to make Aliya if we were fleeing persecution but that is not the case, notwithstanding that rabbis have always been among the most persecuted Jews, and usually by other Jews. But that is not why. It would be easy to make Aliya if America had become unlivable, a place without a long-term Jewish future, and one can make a compelling argument that the handwriting is presently on the wall waiting to be read. Nonetheless, when I announced to the shul eighteen months ago that we would be making aliya in July 2020, the United States was peaceful and prosperous, President Trump was cruising to a (narrow) election victory, and pandemics, economic collapse and race riots were not even on the horizon. That we left amid all this turmoil in American life is a coincidence and not the proximate cause of our departure. In any event, "coerced Aliya" (running from something) is not as salutary or enjoyable as "voluntary Aliya" (running towards something). We are in the latter category in fulfillment of the verse in Shir Hashirim (1:4), "Moshcheini, acharecha narutza." Pull me and I will run after You.

It would be easy to make Aliya if our children lived here – and two children already do, with grandchildren, but two still live in the US with grandchildren. We have experienced the range of emotions, of farewell and reunion, as can be expected. It would be easy to make Aliya if I was out of a job and had nowhere else to turn, but that would also be untrue. I could have stayed. It was a l'chatchila choice (ab initio, even granting the long time abroad), not a b'diavad (post facto).

Politically, it turns out to have been a lateral move. I went from one country (the USA) where leftists and anarchists are daily and violently protesting the government's failure to deal effectively with the Coronavirus and where the media elites despise the head of government to another country (Israel) where leftists and anarchists are daily and violently protesting the government's failure to deal effectively with the Coronavirus and where the media elites despise the head of government. Like I said, a lateral move.

So why make Aliya now? And the simple answer is: it was time. Personally, professionally, and ideologically, it was time to make the move that is the mandate and destiny of all Jews.

For one thing, the future of the Jewish people is in Israel rather than anywhere in the exile. If the events of the last few months (or century) have not demonstrated that, then nothing will ever be sufficiently convincing. The exile is drying up around us. More Jews live today in Israel than in the rest of the world combined. Moreover, after millennia of persecution, punitive measures, and harsh restrictions directed against Jews generally and specifically those who wanted to dwell in the land of Israel, today there is no Jew in the world living in a country from which he or she cannot freely emigrate and come live in the land of Israel. And if there are (Cuba?), there are just a relative handful. That is a divine gift.

It was time to be a player in the grand game of Jewish life rather than just a highly interested and vocal spectator. And I do not doubt that for all the dedication of rabbis, teachers and professional leaders in the Jewish world – and for all the vast investments in Jewish infrastructure that makes the United States such a hospitable and pleasurable exile – life in the exile is a holding pattern. We are trying to hold on to something – powerful in its own right and indispensable for almost two centuries – that cannot be sustained in perpetuity. We are not building as much as we are trying not to fall. We are walking on a ledge rather on solid footing. And now this is true not only spiritually but also physically and politically.

Few will deny that America has experienced two terrible traumas in the last five months, both unpredictable but both bearing an imprint that will leave a long term mark on American life. The Coronavirus pandemic exposed the greatest vulnerability in America today: the polarization that is itself an epidemic. The hatred of the President has reached self-destructive proportions, in which his legion of political and media enemies would rather see the country collapse further than recover even gradually. The tirades about Trump's failures to halt the pandemic or economic dislocation are vociferous, and inversely proportionate to the suggestion of any alternative plan or approach. It is particularly unctuous, which is to say typical of politics at its worst, to criticize every policy without offering even a hint of how you would have done it differently or better. So they do what politicians love doing – printing money and claiming credit for distributing it to the voters, and trying to WIN at all costs.

What is most damaging to American society is the growing notion among the elites – not the mob of racists and anarchists – that America was conceived in sin, nurtured in criminality and has no redeeming value. In the turbulent 60's, the elitist institutions protected themselves against the anarchists. Today, the corporations, media and universities join hands with anti-American anarchists to stifle liberties like freedom of speech, assembly and worship in the name of some higher dogma, and routinely purvey lies, untruths and distortions of reality – in order to both protect and encourage the anarchists and, it can't be denied, win an election. "Systemic racism," all the rage today, is an indictment without any possible defense (to defend against it is itself racist); it is a cudgel more than it is a complaint.

Opposing sides that no longer share common values, a definition of truth or reality or even rules of speech cannot interact. When one side of a debate is perceived by the other not just as wrong but as evil and immoral, public discourse ends and mob rule begins. That the mob now rules – anarchists destroying private or government property, assaulting innocent people in the streets, attacking the police, "canceling" those who disagree with them (the latter, woefully predicted by Orwell) – will only be tempered and then only momentarily if President Trump is defeated in November. And if he loses by a whisker, amid allegations of voter fraud abetted by mail-in ballots, harvested ballots, forged ballots, and on line voting in key swing states, then all bets are off and the hostility will no longer be unilateral. And if Trump wins, as is eminently possible given the lies people tell pollsters and the fear of expressing public support? There will be even more violence. Uneasy times are ahead.

Jews should especially take note of this because we are in the unenviable position of being perceived as part of the privileged white establishment by the minorities who are now protesting across the country but not by the privileged white establishment itself who see Jews as outsiders. Jews will have no natural allies in the coming struggle, which will come as a shock to liberal Jews who think their liberalism and historic support for civil rights inoculates them from the disruptions ahead. The liberal Jew of old –tolerant, open, respectful, and supportive of even anathematic views like the right of Nazis to march in Skokie – is a dinosaur, because that type of liberalism has disappeared. The Democrat party of old, the church (or synagogue) of most modern Jews, no longer exists. It too pays obeisance to the leftist mob, and is unsympathetic to Israel and to the Jewish ethos, not that most Jews realize it.

In the best sense, none of that is a reason to move to Israel, although it might be the tipping point in people's otherwise positive decision. Jews have an unblemished record of staying in the exile a bit too long and paying a heavy price for it. But more importantly, we all recognize certain basic truths about Torah and Jewish life. The long prophesied "Kibbutz Galuyot" (ingathering of the exiles) has not only occurred but is actually entering its final stages. Jews from over 130 countries today live in Israel. The return to the land of Israel, itself a biblical prophecy, is something that we now take for granted. Most Jews alive today cannot envision a world without the Jewish state of Israel. Even in quarantine (where I now find myself, in escalating tedium, life on hold), I realize that centuries of Jews would have given their right arms to be able to quarantine in the land of Israel.

It is not without its problems. As I am sure I will note in the coming years, many of the afflictions of the more modern, leftist, faddish elements of Orthodoxy, and its neo-Conservative offspring, exist here as well, along with the clamor for a more malleable mesorah and elastic morality. There is much to do here, especially in warding off the displacement of Jewish morality by Western morality. But these are the problems of growth, of building the future, rather than trying to preserve the past.

I feel blessed that I am able to be here, as I feel blessed to have succeeded in my careers in the exile. Even as a rabbi, I never hid the fact that Aliya was both a Torah value and an imperative, even if it was against my interest in saying so. I certainly don't disparage the USA or its people, or my Jewish brothers and sisters there. I was the beneficiary of prior generations who not only built the wonderful Jewish community of Teaneck but who constructed the edifice of American Jewish life that enabled survivors and refugees to rebuild Torah after the horrors of the Holocaust. For that, I will always be appreciative of America, its history, its aspirations and the haven it provided to Jews and others.

Nonetheless, we should not let our gratitude and nostalgia for the past cloud our vision of the present and future. With blessings from Israel!

Rock terror continues, authorities won't act

Tuesday, July 28, 2020, 16:41 Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher: "The various branches of the law enforcement and security authorities must act for the sake of security for citizens. Rock throwing and other attacks on cars constitutes a life-threatening danger, and we demand law enforcement, prevention, neutralization, and bringing terrorists to trial."
Rock terror in Yehuda and Shomron continues, but suspects are not being detained. Approximately two months ago terrorists threw rocks at an Israeli car on Route 60, near the Beit Anun Junction, damaging the car. Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher sent letters to the army and to the police, demanding that the suspects be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. However the army replied that it is the responsibility of the police to apprehend rock-throwers, and the police have closed the case due to "perpetrator unknown".
The attack is described in the letter: "The rocks hit my client's car on the right side, miraculously did not cause him bodily injury and he continued to drive. However the rocks caused damage to the metalwork on the entire right side of the car, including the front and rear doors."
Bleicher stressed that "Throwing rocks at a moving vehicle directly endangers the passengers and is liable to have fatal consequences." Also in the letter Bleicher demanded that everything be done to bring the terrorists to trial for attempted murder or throwing stones at a vehicle with the intent to injure passengers. The demands include gathering video documentation from the security and traffic surveillance cameras in the area and carrying out intelligence operations "to the extent necessary to apprehend the terrorist."
The answers received from the army and the police indicate that they are each transferring responsibility to the other. The Public Complaints Office at the Headquarters of the GOC of the Central Command replied to Bleicher that "Handling the investigation of the incident is under the responsibility of the Israeli Police, who are responsible for leading and conducting a thorough investigation. Collecting the investigative material is under the responsibility of the police as part of general investigation. All of the information about advancements in the investigation is held only by the police, and they are the address for receiving information on the subject."
The Israeli Police responded to Bleicher with a letter explaining that the investigation was closed due to "perpetrator unknown". Examination of the investigative material showed that no lead had been found for a suspect and in light of that the case was closed due to "perpetrator unknown".
Bleicher noted that there is a double disconnect between the army and the police, which hampers the possibility of bringing terrorists to trial. The first disconnect occurs because the police do not initiate carrying out detentions in the Arab villages of Yehuda and Shomron, but rather wait until the army detains suspects. The army, for their part, concentrates primarily on preventing terror attacks and less on bringing rock throwers to trial, and therefore will rarely pursue and detain rock throwers who have already fled.
The second disconnect occurs because the police, who receive complaints from civilians about rock throwing, immediately close investigative cases on the grounds of "perpetrator unknown", after issuing authorization for damage compensation, and are not aware of suspects detained by the army. The army, which does enter the villages and detain suspects, does not have the details from the victims of rock throwing. Thus it happens that even when the army detains a terrorist who admits to throwing rocks, they do not have details from the victim, because the police have already closed the case. Therefore the terrorists are sentenced to a much shorter prison term than they would have been if the specific victims had been included in the case.
This case is being handled as part of Honenu's campaign to eradicate rock terror and bring the terrorists to trial. To assist residents of Yehuda and Shomron and motorists who drive through those regions, Honenu has publicized a video clip (see the post on the website) and a guide to reporting incidents which includes: filing a complaint, keeping track of progress in the investigation until the perpetrators are brought to trial, and verifying that they are penalized to the full extent of the law. Honenu has called on everyone who has experienced a rock throwing or Molotov cocktail attack to contact its headquarters so that the terrorists can be brought to trial. See here and here for cases of recent attacks being handled by Honenu.

Fwd: NEA is pushing antisemitic BLM & Sex to U.S. kids? What??? PJTN

Bsd

Wake Up America!

A War Is Being Waged In Our Country by Progressive Forces Against the Very Fabric of Civilization.

We must counter the indoctrination, an attack on our children's minds and souls,  and educate and advocate  teaching the Laws of Basic Universal Morality. These are Divine Laws for all of humanity, from the beginning of time.

We must teach these laws to ourselves and to our children, in all public and private schools, from very early on, beginning from early Childhood Education!

These laws, the Foundation of our great Nation are also known as the 7 Noahide Laws!

7 Laws of Noah

Remaining silent is NOT an option!!!

It is because of the deep moral disintegration of society did the Creator of the world bring the Great Flood in the time of Noah.

Once abominations have steeped into society, etched in the fabric and law of the land, there is no rectification.

This must be stopped now since there is no coexistence.

Dear Robin,

Not unexpectedly in the current school crisis, the California educational system is setting standards in their seeming commitment to further distort the lives of America's children and these United States.

"The lawless man is a man of iniquity: He goes forth with distortion of the mouth"

Proverbs 6:12

I must preface all by first saying the annual July convention of the National Association of Educators (NEA) has wrapped up. This year—although limited to virtual meetings, the assembly adopted hundreds of new business items, most of which had nothing to do with traditional education or the benefit of our children, as parents might hope. Billing itself on its website as "the world's largest democratic deliberative body," the almost three million-strong coalition of America's teachers is "democratic" in the truest sense of the word. Sealing their union vote and millions of dollars of support money for the Democrats in 2020 was a top mandate before the closing virtual gavel feel.

Let's look at what else NEA supports: Sanctuary cities, abolishing ICE, defunding police forces in major cities across America, supporting radical, antisemitic Black Lives Matter (BLM) training in racial indoctrination K-12, gender equality and the normalization of childhood gender selection (children now have a staggering assortment of 52 gender IDs to identify with) among their many other far left-leaning agendas. For decades NEA has bound and gagged the efforts of truly dedicated educators in their midst while using their membership dues to fund full-term abortions. The union stands avowed in opposition to the foes of homophobia, transphobia and capitalism. While those overseeing our kids' classrooms or virtual learning in 2020 are being pushed to establish Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs in their schools, they are also being encouraged with a wink to hold to the standards of "re-dedication to the pursuit of increased excellence in student learning in every public school, while making every educator a great educator." Hypocrisy gone wild!

Enter NEA's latest full-on assault through the classroom—this time to sexualize our children. Leading the charge are union organizations fronted by "teachers" in the deceptively named "Healthy Teen Network"— a coalition of some 180 sexual reproduction and 'health justice' organizations. Included in the ranks of those looking over parents shoulders to pose a concern in the best interest of the sex lives of school-aged children are the CDC (Center for Disease Control), Planned Parenthood, and the Sexuality Information & Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) whose motto is: "Sex Ed For Sex Change." Their collective battle cry is a demand for funding and legislation for their preferred brand of sex education which they claim is a 'human right.'

Fast forward to California: California Assemblywoman Shirley Nash Weber of the 79th District of San Diego and surrounding area was recently honored by the "Healthy Teen Network" for making Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) a legal mandate in California's public schools. A politician who secured her position thanks to the avid financial support of the NEA, all attempts to shut down her legislation were met by the stone wall of the state's two-thirds majority Democrat vote.

What happened to reading, writing and arithmetic?

In 2019, sex education in the U.S. became mandated on a state level. It is up to each state, district, and school board to determine the implementation of federal policy and funds. As of last year, 24 states and the District of Columbia had programs. While claiming to present a curriculum that "aims to give students the knowledge, attitudes, skills and values to make appropriate and healthy life choices," there's a much darker presence behind the mask of both the CSE and Healthy Teen Networks. Being forced to accept perversion as "the norm"  is not the education of choice most parents would make for the children. Forced storytime readings presented to kindergarteners by a friendly drag queen are not educational moments that belong in American schools—in the very buildings where mention of God and prayer is not allowed!

While American parents are trying to protect their children from online perverts, lurid pornography sites and strangers offering candy, the educational experts are lobbying for government-run schools to give sexual perversion the green light in our American education. The Healthy Teen Network coalition has a 2020 goal to be in all 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.

We cannot allow this to happen.

Our Founding Fathers never intended that our schools be controlled by the government or by union forces. We should take great hope with the recent Supreme Court decision to permit religious schools to benefit from private school choice options. We must pray, seek God's wisdom and take this time to make informed choices of what the new school year will look like for our children and grandchildren!. We must stand for our values in our educational system!

PJTN is committed to reform in education—the curriculum, the content and the delivery of educational values for our next generation of leaders in America! With less than 100 days left until the November elections, we must marshal support for those who represent the values about which our nation was built — "ground up" from our local school district to our broader community, to our state, to our national leadership. Become familiar and let your voice be heard!

Please consider your best gift of support today!

We are weekly pushed to the limit to keep up with all the demands of this time of crisis in America and never has our work been more critical!

It is only with your support that we can accomplish all the challenges set before us.

Fw: Honenu reports: Detained attack victims released

Thursday, July 23, 2020, 12:03 ‎The Petah Tikva Magistrates Court ordered the release of the three Jewish agriculturalists who were detained on Monday, July 20, after experiencing a brutal attack

https://honenu.org/appeal-filed-over-remand-of-attacked-agriculturalists/

near Ma'aleh Shomron two weeks previously. The court rejected the police demand for release on condition of severe restrictions and released two of the agriculturalists on condition of several days distancing from the site of the attack and the other agriculturalist was released to several days of house arrest.
Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar, who represented the agriculturalists stated, "The police demanded the release of the suspects under extremely restrictive conditions, including house arrest, bail, guarantees, and distancing orders, most of which the court rejected.
"With regard to one of the agriculturalists, the court ruled that for the remainder of the week he will remain at his farm. In a week all of the agriculturalists will be able to return to their routine and cultivate the land [the site of the attack]."
Yossi Dagan, the Shomron Regional Council Head, who assisted with the release of the detainees: "I welcome the court's decision, the correct decision. … It is good that the court ordered the release of the agriculturalists.
"The agriculturalists who were attacked are normative and law-abiding citizens who were the victims of a brutal attack by an inflamed Arab mob. They are the victims, not the attackers, and the State of Israel should commend them. Every civilian, policeman and soldier should know that if he is attacked by terrorists from the Palestinian Authority and uses his weapon in order to defend his life, he will receive full backing and that is the way that is should be."
Several days previously Dagan sent a letter to Major-General Moshe Bareket, the Yehuda and Shomron Police Commander, explaining that the agriculturalists were working on land purchased and registered according to the law, were faced with an attack by a mob which directly endangered their lives, and if they had not used their weapons in self defense, the incident would have ended differently.
Knesset Member Betzalel Smotrich addressed Amir Ohana, the Interior Minister, concerning the police conduct in the case, and stated that this was not the first time that the Central Unit of the Yehuda and Shomron Police had implemented "an outrageous policy against Jews who were saved by a miracle from lethal injury. The victim turns into the accused, while the Arab rioters are barely interrogated, and certainly not detained."
Earlier today (Thursday), the mother of one of the detainees called for their release from remand: "I want the public to know about this incident. Of course its in someone's vested interest for no-one to know about it and no-one to hear about it, but today, in the State of Israel, there are three young men in remand and being investigated instead of being given emotional therapy for the trauma they experienced. They are under interrogation. As a mother I am crying out for my son, and my only thought is that I am fortunate to have a son for whom to cry out."
To recap, on Monday, July 20, two weeks after the incident, policemen from the Central Unit of the Yehuda and Shomron Police detained the injured agriculturalists, all of whom have completed army service, some of them in elite commando units, who had opened fire in self defense, on suspicion of injuring two of the Arab attackers. It should be noted that after the incident all of the agriculturalists were interrogated at the police station and gave testimony about the incident. They were released after interrogation. The following day (Tuesday), the Petah Tikva Magistrates Court extended the remand of two of the agriculturalists by two days and the remand of an additional agriculturalist by five days. Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar filed an appeal with the Central District Court in Lod demanding the immediate release of the detainees, which was partially accepted.
In the attack, which occurred in early July, hundreds of Arabs attacked a group of seven Jewish agriculturalists working on Jewish land near the community of Ma'aleh Shomron. During the attack, which included rock throwing and beatings, four of the agriculturalists were injured. MDA personnel evacuated them to the Meir Hospital in K'far Saba.

Arab protesters attack Jews in Yaffo

‎Four Jewish youths were attacked during an Arab protest in Yaffo on Sunday, July 19, after they inadvertently drove into the site. The protesters cursed them, spit at them, attempted to physically injure them, and damaged their car. The youths filed a complaint with the police and currently Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher is demanding that the suspects be brought to trial.
After a time the youths escaped from the protest: "We succeeded in getting out of there by a miracle. It was a miracle that nothing happened to us, only property damage. We asked one of the policemen to help us. We came to him traumatized and stressed, and he was so callous to us. He saw that we had experienced an attack, and he didn't even ask us if we were OK."

GOC suddenly cancels engagement party

On Sunday, July 19, a quarter of an hour before a man administratively distanced from the Shomron was supposed to leave for his engagement party at his finance's house in a Shomron community, he and his family were surprised to receive a letter suddenly canceling the special permit allowing him to attend it. Approximately one week prior to the event, the administratively distanced man filed an official request for the permit, and Major-General Tamir Yadai, the GOC of the Home Front Command, authorized him to take a direct route to his destination in the Shomron and stay there for a specific number of hours.
The father of the administratively distanced man said, "It is an embarrassment and a disgrace to receive a draconian and antisemitic order such as this in the State of the Jewish People. There has never been anything like this! You should simply be embarrassed to send me something like this a quarter of an hour (!!) before leaving for an engagement party.
Shmuel (Zangi) Meidad, the director of Honenu, which is assisting the family stated, "The use of administrative orders is always a major problem. The public has not yet internalized the situation because the orders have not yet reached the man on the street, but it is a very slippery and steep slope. This time, all sense of proportion has been lost.

Attack dog incident in Hevron

Recently, Arabs released an attack dog on a Hevron resident and her sister while they were exercising within the area of the Jewish Community of Hevron. Despite security cameras at the site and documentation of the suspects transferred by the girl to the police, there has been no notification that suspects have been detained. Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who is representing the girl, sent a letter to the Hevron Police Commander demanding that the suspects be detained and brought to trial.
The letter mentions that the entire area is monitored by a network of cameras: "The incident occurred in a place with cameras and according to the best of my client's knowledge, the Border Police Tomb of the Patriarchs Unit Network Operations Center has a video clip which documents it." Additionally, the girl filed a complaint with the police and gave them the photographs of the suspects which she had managed to take.

More violence in Beit Jann

On Monday, July 13, Honenu responded to the violent incidents in Beit Jann in which inspectors from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority were attacked, and censured the police conduct. Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher mentioned that on Lag B'Omer, this year May 11-12, Jewish worshipers were brutally assaulted near Beit Jann and despite repeated requests to the police, at this time there has been no announcement of detainees.
Bleicher: "Ignoring certain crimes and certain forms of criminality will not solve the problem, but rather increase and exacerbate it. Such with the brutal antisemitic attack on hareidi worshipers on Lag B'Omer. The law enforcement authorities chose not to launch an investigation which would penalize the criminals, and consequently inspectors from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority encountered rioting. It is not too late to rectify the situation and prosecute the rioters."
