Robin,

Over the Fourth of July weekend, there was plenty of real news to report, from joyous celebrations of Independence Day to more tragic shootings in Chicago to North Korea's latest ICBM test that's set the world on edge. But if you tuned into CNN, you'd think there was only one story anywhere on Earth: President Trump retweeted a .gif from an old WWE broadcast, showing him bodyslamming a wrestler with the CNN logo superimposed over his face. They seemed to think this was the end of the world. Personally, I thought it was pretty funny.

However, CNN obviously took it veeeeery seriously, because we not only got days of hot yak about how it was fomenting violence against reporters, but now, it has led to CNN completely destroying its own reputation in a way that might possibly have crossed the line of illegality. They have gone from the "Cable News Network" to the "Clinton News Network" to the "Crybaby News Network" and now at last, they are the "Corleone News Network."

Tuesday, CNN.com posted (publicly, as if they're actually proud of this) that they had tracked down the identity of the anonymous Internet user who created that .gif that Trump retweeted. They report that after having been contacted by CNN, he apologized, took it down, and promised not to make any more tasteless memes that offend thin-skinned and easily-frightened CNN reporters. The report added ominously, "CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change."

Let that wash over you for a moment. On the 4th of July – a day when we celebrate every American's right to freedom of speech – CNN openly declared that they had tracked down an American citizen who did nothing but exercise that right…they extorted an apology from him and forced him to censor both what he created and what he might create in the future (not because it was obscene, but just because they didn't like it)…and threatened that if he tried to exercise free speech that displeased them in the future, they would release his personal identity details, a terrifying thought for a non-public figure in a time when a hopped-up leftist just pulled out a gun and tried to assassinate a group of Republican Congress members.

This was so beyond the pale that it elicited furious reaction from across the political spectrum. CNN's original tweet has garnered hundreds of responses, almost uniformly condemning them. Many people posted new .gifs they had made, trashing the CNN logo in creative and (am I still allowed to say this?) hilarious ways. Some commenters noted that the legal department must have been out for the holiday weekend when this ran. It's practically an open admission of stalking, extortion and violation of the .gif creators' First Amendment rights.

Donald Trump didn't have to bodyslam CNN to shatter their reputation as a respectable news service. They've just KO'ed themselves.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee

North Korea's firecracker

By Mike Huckabee

While we were all enjoying fireworks, Kim Jong Un set off another firecracker of his own, testing an ICBM that traveled far enough that with a flatter trajectory, it could have reached Alaska. Kim called it an Independence Day gift to the US, adding, "We should deliver big and small presents often." He's getting a present back: Our UN ambassador Nikki Haley has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, and President Trump suggested that China "end this nonsense once and for all." If not, we may be forced to send a present to North Korea, and we have the capability to deliver it directly to Kim's doorstep.

Invisible missiles

By Mike Huckabee

As if we don't have enough to worry about, China has reportedly succeeded in developing a hypersonic engine to power missiles. That could potentially result in the ability to fire missiles that travel at seven times the speed of a Tomahawk missile, making them virtually invisible to present missile defense systems.

This comes from a news service controlled by the Chinese government, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, it's a reminder that we live in a dangerous world where keeping some things secret is a life-or-death matter, and America can't allow its military technology to fall behind that of other nations who don't have self-defense as their primary goal, or to let our technology fall into their hands. If China is getting ahead of the US in technologies that could endanger our lives, I think it's worth reminding you that it got a jump start on that in the 1990s. With the reported lobbying of now-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Bill Clinton approved the sale of advanced US missile technology to China, which we later discovered was one of the Democratic Party's most generous (if illegal) donors.

What goes around comes around. Let's just hope it doesn't come around to us at 3800 mph.

Culture corrupts

By Mike Huckabee

A new study finds that a majority of Americans believe that our current culture (particularly such things as television, social media and video games) is a corrupting influence that has an overall negative influence on young people. Further, they believe it's going to get worse in the future.

Of course, some might dismiss this by saying that adults have long claimed that pop culture was corrupting youth and would only get worse in the future. Then again, they were right. It did. And it did.

A special 4th of July story

By Mike Huckabee

Here's a great Fourth of July story: meet a genuine American hero, the last surviving member of the famous Doolittle Raiders, who landed the first strike back against Japan after their devastating sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. He got a special Fourth of July phone call in advance of his 102nd birthday.
