Robin,
If there's one sure way for Congressional Republicans to tell whether or not they should support a bill, it's to look at the reactions to it from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. If they predict that it will bring about Armageddon and kill millions of people (i.e., the tax cut), then it's probably a great idea. If they are smiling so hard they look like a pair of Jokers, then run, run like the wind from it.
Unfortunately, that lesson didn't sink in. Yesterday, after allowing all of 17 hours to read a bill of over 2200 pages, the House and then the Senate voted to pass a $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that explodes this year's deficit by $800 billion. It had Pelosi and Schumer practically dancing with glee that the "era of austerity is over" (and they define "austerity" as the trillion-dollar annual deficits under Obama!)

Prayers for Trebes, France
By Mike Huckabee
Prayers this morning for the safety of the people of Trebes, France, where a standoff is underway between police and a gunman who stormed a supermarket while yelling, "Allahu Akbar" and took hostages. He claims to be with ISIS, and as of this writing, he's killed at least one person and wounded two others. This is a breaking story, so keep a close eye on the news for the latest developments.

Trump veto possible

Thanks President Trump for considering VETO of the omnibus spending bill that insults the people who voted for you. The GOP leadership sold out. You don't have to! #DefundPlannedParenthood

The Dow panics
By Mike Huckabee
The Dow dived 724 points on Thursday, when a flurry of news stories spooked investors. They included President Trump announcing $60 billion in tariffs on China and their threats to retaliate against US goods, Trump's attorney in the Mueller investigation resigning, the Fed moving to raise interest rates, and fears of the scandal over Facebook driving away users and advertisers.
As is often the case with stock panics, this is mostly due to fears of things that might or might not happen. For instance, the tariff threat might just spark new trade negotiations with China, which doesn't want a trade war with us anymore than we want one with them. The only certainty at this point is that if you bought stocks when they were higher, and panic and sell after they drop 724 points, that's a sure way to lose money.

John Bolton
By Mike Huckabee
There's another shake-up at the White House, with news that President Trump's national security adviser, Gen. H.R. McMaster, will be replaced next month by John Bolton. Trump called it an amicable and mutual decision and thanked McMaster for helping his Administration accomplish great things in foreign policy. McMaster tweeted that after 34 years of service to the nation, he is also requesting retirement from the US Army this summer, after which he will leave public service. Or as the media is depicting that: "CHAOS!!!"
Bolton is predictably being described by the media as a "war hawk," a hardliner on North Korea and Iran, and a Fox News commentator, rather than as a summa cum laude graduate of Yale Law, foreign policy expert, author, and former US Ambassador to the UN, Assistant Attorney General and Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs at the State Department. All that is true, even if you don't hear it.
Bolton is also being assailed by some on the far left as a crazed, rightwing war monger and Islamophobe, which is probably also what they think of their moms who voted for Trump, so take that with a grain of salt. Evidence of his dangerousness as presented on one liberal site is that Bolton has written articles titled "The Legal Case for Striking North Korea First," "Expect America's Tensions with China and Russia to Rise in 2018" and "How to Defund the UN." My reaction is that the first one just reflects the long-overdue toughening of US attitudes that finally forced North Korea to the negotiating table on nuclear weapons, the second sounds as if he nailed it, and as for defunding the UN, sign me up!
In short, of all the things I'll be lying awake and worrying about in the next year, having John Bolton as a foreign policy adviser is pretty far down the list, right underneath "If I tell this joke, will it make Nancy Pelosi mad at me?"
