How Israel should Negotiate with the Palestinians. The Art of Negotiation!

bs"d

Donald Trump prides himself in being an expert in the "art of negotiation" and making a deal.  There is much that we can learn from him.

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, very honorable public servants in the United States Government, Presidential candidates and  phenomenal friends and defenders of Israel, but also opponents of Trump,  called Trump anti Israel.

This does not necessarily mean that their assessment of Trump is accurate.

Let us review what Donald Trump said:

"As president… there is nothing I would rather do than to bring peace to Israel and its neighbors generally," Trump responded. "I think it serves no purpose to say that you have a good guy and a bad guy. Now, I may not be successful in doing it, it's probably the toughest negotiation anywhere in the world of any kind. It doesn't help if I start saying I'm very pro-Israel."

Trump's two biggest Republican challengers, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, subsequently attacked Trump, with Rubio calling Trump's position "anti-Israel."
As far as I understand, Israel is also interested in a peace deal. I'm not saying I'll succeed, or even that an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians is within reach, but I want to try. But in order for an agreement to happen, the Palestinians need to show interest. It's a little difficult to reach an agreement when the other side doesn't really want to talk to you.

So let's for a moment trust Trump when he says that he is a great supporter of Israel (even more that his opponents....a very hard feat to match...) How can we interpret his above statement?

Trump wishes to be the Neutral negotiator.

Therefore, it is up to each side to present their case and then there is give and take until a deal is reached.

Israel has done extremely poorly when it comes to negotiating their position. They are greatly impeded by the Obama Administration and International players who are anti Israel. They have been bribed and/or blackmailed so as not to present their case in the fullest and best possible light or in Israel's best interest.

The job of the neutral negotiator is to make sure that each side is heard.   Otherwise, by definition they are not neutral.  It is not the job of the neutral party negotiator to make sure that one side's position is stronger than the other's side nor is it their place to impede one of the sides from presenting their case in the best possible light.

Trump would be the first to acknowledge that Israel needs to start the negotiation from a position of strength rather than from a position of weakness! He probably would say the same for the Palestinians.

How Israel should Negotiate her position:

If Israel is a Jewish State as it claims to be, it should negotiate as a Jewish State!  What is fundamental to Torah should dictate how Israel should Negotiate!

There is no way that we can negotiate away our Biblical Homeland, Since it is Divine Will that the Nation of Israel inherit the Land of Israel.  This is for everyone's benefit including the Palestinians. This is not a racist concept.  In the Temple Mount,  a similar phenomenon within the Nation of Israel.  The Israelites are allowed up to a certain point on the Mount. The Levites are allowed closer.  The Priests, the Koahanim can enter the Holy Section to do the Service and only the High Priest on Yom Kippur can enter the Holy of Holies.  In this way noone will die because they were overstepping their boundaries.

So what is there to negotiate?

Lots!  Let's walk out of the box for a moment!

In the Bible,  the boundaries of  Israel were delineated in 2 separate place.

The first place was Breishit 15:13-18 http://www.chabad.org/calendar/view/day_cdo/aid/272527/jewish/Covenant-Between-the-Parts.htm

On the 15th of Nissan of the year 2018 from creation (1743 BCE) G-d forged a special covenant with Abraham in which the destiny of the Jewish people was foretold: the Holy Land was bequeathed to them as their eternal heritage, but first they would have to experience galut--exile and persecution. "And He said to Abram: 'Know surely that your descendants shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will be enslaved to them, and they will afflict them four hundred years... and afterwards they shall come out with great wealth.' And when the sun went down and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a burning torch which passed between those pieces... On that day G-d made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'To your seed I have given these land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates'"
These boundaries are the boundaries of  greater Israel consistent with the boundaries in the 1920 Mandate of Palestine.   http://www.mythsandfacts.org/conflict/mandate_for_palestine/mandate_for_palestine.htm

Israel can  negotiate from the greater boundaries that were assigned to Abram to the more limited boundaries commanded to Moshe Rabbeinu.   http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0434.htm#1 in Parshat Masei.

Bamidbar 34: 1-12
Numbers Chapter 34 בְּמִדְבַּר

א  וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. 1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
ב  צַו אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם, כִּי-אַתֶּם בָּאִים, אֶל-הָאָרֶץ כְּנָעַן:  זֹאת הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר תִּפֹּל לָכֶם בְּנַחֲלָה, אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, לִגְבֻלֹתֶיהָ. 2 'Command the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land of Canaan, this shall be the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to the borders thereof.
ג  וְהָיָה לָכֶם פְּאַת-נֶגֶב מִמִּדְבַּר-צִן, עַל-יְדֵי אֱדוֹם; וְהָיָה לָכֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב, מִקְצֵה יָם-הַמֶּלַח קֵדְמָה. 3 Thus your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin close by the side of Edom, and your south border shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea eastward;
ד  וְנָסַב לָכֶם הַגְּבוּל מִנֶּגֶב לְמַעֲלֵה עַקְרַבִּים, וְעָבַר צִנָה, והיה (וְהָיוּ) תּוֹצְאֹתָיו, מִנֶּגֶב לְקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ; וְיָצָא חֲצַר-אַדָּר, וְעָבַר עַצְמֹנָה. 4 and your border shall turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and the goings out thereof shall be southward of Kadesh-barnea; and it shall go forth to Hazar-addar, and pass along to Azmon;
ה  וְנָסַב הַגְּבוּל מֵעַצְמוֹן, נַחְלָה מִצְרָיִם; וְהָיוּ תוֹצְאֹתָיו, הַיָּמָּה. 5 and the border shall turn about from Azmon unto the Brook of Egypt, and the goings out thereof shall be at the Sea.
ו  וּגְבוּל יָם, וְהָיָה לָכֶם הַיָּם הַגָּדוֹל וּגְבוּל; זֶה-יִהְיֶה לָכֶם, גְּבוּל יָם. 6 And for the western border, ye shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your west border.
ז  וְזֶה-יִהְיֶה לָכֶם, גְּבוּל צָפוֹן:  מִן-הַיָּם, הַגָּדֹל, תְּתָאוּ לָכֶם, הֹר הָהָר. 7 And this shall be your north border: from the Great Sea ye shall mark out your line unto mount Hor;
ח  מֵהֹר הָהָר, תְּתָאוּ לְבֹא חֲמָת; וְהָיוּ תּוֹצְאֹת הַגְּבֻל, צְדָדָה. 8 from mount Hor ye shall mark out a line unto the entrance to Hamath; and the goings out of the border shall be at Zedad;
9 and the border shall go forth to Ziphron, and the goings out thereof shall be at Hazar-enan; this shall be your north border.
י  וְהִתְאַוִּיתֶם לָכֶם, לִגְבוּל קֵדְמָה, מֵחֲצַר עֵינָן, שְׁפָמָה. 10 And ye shall mark out your line for the east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham;
יא  וְיָרַד הַגְּבֻל מִשְּׁפָם הָרִבְלָה, מִקֶּדֶם לָעָיִן; וְיָרַד הַגְּבֻל, וּמָחָה עַל-כֶּתֶף יָם-כִּנֶּרֶת קֵדְמָה. 11 and the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down, and shall strike upon the slope of the sea of Chinnereth eastward;

12 and the border shall go down to the Jordan, and the goings out thereof shall be at the Salt Sea; this shall be your land according to the borders thereof round about.'

We must up our bar to the  "Mandate for Palestine" 1920 The Legal Aspects of Jewish Rights by Eli E. Hertz   http://www.mythsandfacts.org/conflict/mandate_for_palestine/mandate_for_palestine.htm

The issue is not with Donald Trump. The gov't of Israel unfortunately has difficulty being a Jewish State. However, someone who seriously wants a Jewish State, must use the boundaries in the Bible as the absolute final word on up to which point we can negotiate.

As Moshe Feiglin and many others suggest therefore, at this point in time,  Israel should seriously annex Judea and Samaria and then throw out the hate filled textbooks in the Palestinian territories, They should expel any individual or Palestinian family that clearly has a terrorist agenda against Israel.

Ways for Israel to negotiate from a position of strength:

  • Israel is looking to expand it's borders consistent with the Covenant G-d gave to Abram.. until the Euphrates...
  • Israel wants Jews to have freedom  to practice their religion on Temple Mount. Freedom of Prayer and Freedom of Assembly.
  • Israel will close off water and electricity from Gaza if attacked from Gaza.
  • Israel  will Annex Judea Samaria and Israeli citizens will no longer be subjected to Martial Law under the Civilian Administration.
  • israel will build freely in Judea Samaria and give the Settlers the permits they need to grow and expand legally.  They will not allow illegal Arab Building.
  • BDS NGO's will be prosecuted
  • Checkpoints in Judea and Samaria targeting non Jewish residents will be standard practice so long as there is any hostile activity on behalf of the Palestinians such as rock throwing, molotov cocktails, shooting and the like....
  • Israel will do whatever it must to protect it's citizens from all Terror activity such as knives, car rammings etc.
  • Terrorists who murder will receive the death penalty
  • Bodies of Terrorists will not be returned to the families but will be buried with pig skin.
  • Israel will encourage all it's citizens to be armed to defend themselves against any hostile or acts of terror and will not prosecute nor persecuteJews who act in self defense.
  • Israel will charge Palestinians for their electricity and water usage
  • Israel will tax all non Jewish Residents!
  • Israel will review all educational material of Palestinian territories to make sure they are not hate filled material against Israel and fire all "educators" of jihad.
  • Israel will forbid all textbooks filled with hate ideology against Israel.
  • Israel will Abolish Unrwa camps and crack down on all programming if they teach martyrdom against Israeli citizens.
  • Israel will throw out any MK's who are not loyal to Israel and who praise acts of terror against Israel
  • israel will demolish homes of terrorists
  • If the family of terrorists glorifies acts of terror against Israel, Israel  will expel them from Israel.
  • Israel will stop illegal Arab building and expel squatters.
  • Israel will abolish Adminsitrative Detention for Jews and Administrative Detention for non Jews will be under careful scrutiny to make sure it is not abused.

Etc. Etc.

Will the Palestinians adhere to Shemittah or other Mitzvoth Teluyot Baaretz Leqet Shikcha and Peah Teruma and Maasroth the Mitzvoth that bring holiness and sanctity to Eretz Yisroel?

All non Jewish Residents of Israel must accept Israel's Sovereignty and abide by the 7 Noahide Laws.

Any non Jewish Resident who accepts Israel's Sovereignty and abide's by the 7 Noahide Laws will have Civil rights for the Ger Toshav. . Israel will worry for their economic, educational and health welfare.  We wish to live in peace and mutual prosperity!

Playing the music!

The Nation of  Israel is like the violinist who is endowed with special talent.  The Land of Israel is like a precious violin. If you wish to create precious music for the world to enjoy you don't give the precious violin to someone who hates music.  You don't even put it into the museum for safeguarding.

Trumps Best Friend from School writes nice things about Trump

bs"d

Peter David Ticktin is a very successful lawyer. He owns his own law firm, Ticktin Law, and he goes all the way back to military school with Donald Trump.
As Mr. Ticktin, Esq., points out in the beginning of his letter, he's made it a practice of staying out of politics for business purposes, as most successful business people do, but he felt he had to speak out after seeing 'Little Marco' and "Lying Ted" try to crucify Trump at the last Republican Presidential debate.
As a law firm, we at The Ticktin Law Group do not like to get involved in politics. As soon as we endorse one side, we risk alienating everyone on the other side. Also, our lawyers and staff are, themselves, on both sides. Politics is not our game. However, Justice is!

If you saw a guy get publicly smeared, and you knew him well from the days you were friends and seniors together in high school, if you knew him to be a decent and honest man, would you want to say something? This is why I need to share what I know.
I was aghast at watching last night's debate. It was a set-up. The moderators, Cruz, and Rubio were all like little alligators trying to take a bite out of Trump. Yes, Donald Trump has had some failures, but he has been exceedingly successful. None of this came out. Instead, there was a general attack. Rubio simply makes up lies. He pretends that Trump has small hands and makes fun of him for something which isn't even real. He pretends that Donald wets his pants, and makes fun of him, as though it was true, and then he calls Donald Trump a "Bully."
I am not suggesting that you should vote or not vote for anyone. I just need to defend a former friend who is being smeared.
Like Donald Trump, I attended New York Military Academy ("NYMA") for high school. In fact, in our senior year, together, Donald was my captain, and I was his 1st Platoon Sergeant. I sometimes joke that I ran his first company for him, Company "A."
People don't really change much from the ages of 17 and 18, and I know this guy. I know him to be a good decent guy. We lived and breathed an Honor Code in those years. It wasn't just a rule. It was our way of life. Neither Donald, nor any other cadet who graduated with us would ever lie, cheat, or steal from a fellow cadet. These values became irreversibly intertwined in the fabric of our personalities, of who we are.
Of the 99 guys (no girls in those days) in our class, there is not one who I know who has a bad word to say about Donald Trump. Think of it. With all the jealousies which arise in high school and thereafter, with all the potential envy, not one of us has anything other than positive memories of this man. How could we? He was an "A" student, a top athlete, and as a leader, he was highly respected. We never feared him, yet we never wanted to disappoint him. He had our respect. He was never a bigot in any way, shape or form. He only hates those who hate. Of course he denounces the KKK.
As to the discussion with the New York Times, it is his choice to release the 'off the record' remarks. However, if he does, it opens the door for all political opposition to make that demand for everyone, and that means that our press will never get those 'off the record' remarks which help them to understand the realities of the campaign. Moreover, the idea that Donald Trump confessed some alternate theory of his position is preposterous. Can anyone believe that all those NY Times reporters are walking around knowing some deep dark nasty secret about a guy who is seeking an endorsement?
The Republican establishment is afraid of Donald Trump. Why? They are afraid that he will lose to Hillary. They don't hate Donald. They hate her. They are so fearful that they fail to see that by expanding the base of voters for Trump, he is more likely to win.
Watching the chorus of whiners, decriers, denigrators, and self-righteous put-down experts from so many directions, from Mit Romney, to Megyn Kelly, Little Mario, it has to make you wonder. Why? Why are so many people so angry with Donald Trump, that they are lying, name calling, ridiculing, and demeaning him as they do. Either they are afraid, or they know him to be evil.
This is why I feel the need to speak out at this time. I know this man. He is a lot of things, but he is not evil. He is a decent honest guy who loves this country, and who is willing to sacrifice so much of what is left of his life, because he knows that this country needs to be fixed, and that it is going to require someone who can do the job. He just doesn't see anything around him other than political hacks, so he is willing to take this huge responsibility.
I'm not saying that he is the only one who can do the job. My point is simply as to his motivation and his goodness.
This next decade is going to be one of major changes. We all see the climate changing, and the world food supply is getting lower. Our fish stock around the world is running low. Oil prices will cause countries to fail. The Middle East is beyond repair, and we have become weak and ineffective around the world. Donald Trump sees the issues and knows that he can assemble leaders who would have the best chance of fixing things. This is why he is running. He does not need it for his own aggrandizement. He doesn't need another big jet or to take up residence in the White House. He just wants things to be fixed, and he knows that the politicians won't fix anything.
I knew Donald Trump and was close to him in our senior year in high school. I just want you to know that there is nothing to fear from him. His character is as good as it gets. He is a patriot, taking on a heroic task, and being thanked by massive abuse.
If you want to see a true reflection of a man, look at his children. Need I say more?

Sincerely,

Robin Ticker

Donald Trump and the Jewish Media

bs"d

update: March 9, 2016
In opposition of Donald Trump:
In support of Donald Trump in the News:
-----
Frankly I am turned off by the Republican candidates bashing each other in order to win the election.  I watched the early debates but then stopped when I saw that instead of focusing on Iran and Isis, the economy etc. they were destroying each other. It was a turn off.

But when Moshe Feiglin blasted Donald Trump in an Arutz7 article
and then not long after I read in American Thinker  about Donald Trump having a narcissistic personality disorder more dangerous than Obama
I decided to go back to watching the debates to see whether there was something that I had missed.

In my gut I believed and still believe that the essence of Donald Trump is on the side of good.  Calling someone dangerous and even worse, a Narcissistic Personality Disorder psychopath is character assassination.  I feel that Donald Trump sees the Forest from the Trees. He sees the big picture and doesn't get caught up in the details. He is not afraid to switch course when his knowledge expands to include information he didn't have previously.  He calls this flexibility.  His goals are to better society. Sometimes money, greed and power get in the way. He needs to be surrounded by honest advisers to keep him on track. .

Yes there are/were negative character traits in Trump that I personally found offensive.  Like when he bashes those who publicly criticize him.  He lashes back with such gusto and even at times vengeance that it's hard not to be blown away. Sure it keeps the opposition in its place. One learns not to start up with Donald Trump or else risk being fired if Donald Trump gets his way.  It is not fun to oppose Donald Trump. He digs it in and even turns the knife when he is attacked even when he is in the lead making someone feel very small especially when they are the underdog. This way he makes sure that they stay there. He has coarse (prust in Yiddish) and popular appeal which comes from man's basic human drives. He will lower the bar of a debate to a new low while at the same time make us laugh as we are reminded of our commonality and that we all are made of the same stuff, flesh and blood with basic human drives and urges...  just in case someone thinks that they are above that.  He has been a businessman that will buy off politicians if he can get away with it if it helps his business not addressing the greater common good.   He promises things that people would like to hear, things that are popular yet when it's all said and done, he delivers far less.  Yet in his mind he has gotten the best deal.

One thing Donald should learn is that people take the side of the underdog and bashing them too much is also counterproductive. This time he is the underdog, or at least it seemed to me reading these posts,  and it worked in his favor.

I decided to watch the latest Republican debate and see for myself if the claim that he has a dangerous character personality holds water.

Before I actually watched the debate this is basically the letter I wrote Moshe Feiglin:

Dear Moshe Feiglin, amv"sh

I generally have tremendous respect for your policies.  I admire your stand to annex Judea and Samaria.  You have been forthcoming in protesting immoral administrative detention for hilltop youth.  You encourage Jewish Identity and the people involved in Zehut,  as they were when you were Manhigut Yehudit, are passionate for Israel, love the Torah and love the Jewish people.  However, in all due respect, my gut feeling,  is that you are off about Trump.  All that you may dislike about him may be accurate but it seems to me that there is a deficiency in your analysis.

Trump's inner soul is what you need to tap into. I see this as a failure on your part to be able to discern between unadulterated evil coming from a deeper source and simply negative character traits.

Sometimes it is very hard to discern evil. I don't claim to be able on the level to judge accurately as only G-d can be Bochen Balev, know exactly what is in Man's heart.

I believe that Donald Trumps heart is in the right place.  I admire that he is not afraid to talk about decapitation of heads and why waterboarding is not such a big deal for these animals.  All the other candidates shy away from some graphic details and seem to be afraid to acknowledge the evil out there that can't be addressed by western standards and values. Ted Cruz for example is still talking as if we are fighting a civilized society. These are subhumans and one needs only to watch some Yezidi documentaries to see what we are dealing with.  These barbarians need to be afraid of the President of the United States and Donald Trump gets it. They need to understand that we will deal with ruthless behavior in kind.

My father ob"m survived WWII even though his first wife and his daughter did not, and found himself at the very end of the War together with some comrades in charge of captured Nazis officers.   They were given the liberty to deal with them as they wished.  I don't know exactly what they did but my impression was that somehow Justice was served.

It seems to me that Donald Trump and Mike Huckabee have mutual respect for each other.  Mike does not share Trump's coarseness nor Trump's drive for material wealth nor Trump's bad bedside manner when one disagrees or gets on his bad side.

He also does not share Trump's popular support.
It seems to me that such  character traits, when channeled properly are precisely the traits necessary to fight evil as long as a clear vision is there.  In Judaism we learn that we can not designate one's nature as purely good or evil.  It is G-d's will as per His commandments and the context of the situation that defines whether it is good or evil.  So killing is bad almost all the time, yet wiping out Amalek, the symbol for unadulterated evil, and killing every man, woman and child from Amalek is a Mitzva we are required to remember and never forget. Being merciful to the cruel is being cruel to the merciful we have learned.  Jews especially have a  very difficult time with this commandment since by Nature we are a compassionate people.  Jews must fight their nature to keep this commandment.

Mike Huckabee a minister, has a theological vision I trust that can fight an ideological war with Isis and Iran.
By bashing Trump or for that matter any of the Republican candidates, we weaken our fight against evil! We sometimes destroy the very medicine that can save us.

It is possible that with proper vision, maybe with Mike Huckabee on his team to provide a theological vision as well as to serve as a character role model being that Mike Huckabee is greatly admired and receives high marks for his sterling character traits, Donald Trump will reach great heights.   Trump can channel all his character traits into fighting Isis and Iran and the immigration crisis not to mention Obamacare and fighting the terrible deficit in the budget.  It's however a total waste channeling it on Rubio or Cruz who are basically good guys who have been serving the United States honorably and have an excellent track record regarding Israel.  If all work together we can succeed to overcome all obstacles,  Obama and Hillary and Sanders, Iran and Isis etc.

Donald Trump has been there and done that.  He has accumulated vast sums of money. One would hope that it is harder to buy him off since it takes one to know one.  He will see through those who try to buy him off,  or at least have advisers who see through the payoffs and bribes for personal gain.  His goals now are hopefully the betterment of society rather than just personal accumulation of wealth.  He has an insider story of which legislation would encourage less dependency on foreign markets at the expense of American workforce and how to grow the local economy so that jobs stay here in America.

Cruz, Rubio and Kasish each have their strengths and weaknesses.  Let the Candidates work together as a team....The one who can bring out the strengths of those on his team is the greatest leader.

So I am not very happy that the Republican candidates are bashing each other right now.  Trump is not innocent in this regard.  But Rubio especially and Cruz as well are ganging up on him and picking fights knowing how he responds. They should unite to fight evil and end character assassination of each other.

Moshe Feiglin,  I feel that your anti Trump post, only serves to weaken  Israels position to fight the evils of Isis and Iran!

Fighting negative character traits is important but for now must not take center stage. Fighting radical Islam,  Isis and Iran must be our priority!

Sincerely,
Robin Ticker

After the watching the Debate my opinion of this letter did not change.  Trump does not strike me as dangerous to Israel.  He denounced David Dukes on multiple occasions

He called Isis animals. He supported the 2nd amendment and came out against assault weapons being banned even though initially years ago he was for it.  He accurately described the scenario where tens of people were shot before the terrorist was neutralized and this could have been prevented had they been neutralized sooner with proper weapons.

His children seem like decent kids one of whom converted to Judaism and married an Orthodox Jew, a strong supporter of Israel.

I too am flexible and if his actions prove me wrong, I will have no problem reevaluating.  But so far I don't see an issue worth worrying about.
As for Sam Vaknin's depiction of Donald Trump as a psychopath, it seems pretty clear that he is totally off.  Surely his statement
"I regard him as much more of a menace than Obama ever was to the future of the USA and, by extension, the world. I am shocked that -- despite an increasing awareness of the dangers of narcissism in the media and in the public -- Trump is still making any headway in this election cycle"

is nothing less than character assassination.

Has Trump empowered the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran as does Obama?   Does he surround himself with advisers who are supporters of Islam? The evils of Islam includes pedophilia, Sharia Law and those who pride themselves on following the example of Mohammad the "Prophet" who deals with infidels by decapitating the men and taking the women as sex slaves.   By calling Donald Trump more of a menace than Obama, he has lost credibility. Trump has no history of empowering evil regimes that defies basic universal morality.

Money, greed, power are all negative character traits that destroy a person and peoples.  Yet these are personality failings.  If the mission is to wipe out G-d's name and G-d's truth and G-d's Word, it is unadulterated evil and must be addressed as such.
Sincerely,

Robin Ticker

The Sin of Passivity of Jewish Leadership Parshat Vayakhel

bs"d

Rabbi Yudin in his weekly radio segment on Nachum Segal JMINTHEAM on the Parsha of the week talked about the Sin of the Eigel, the Sin of the Golden Calf and he spoke as well about the mistake of the Nesiyim, who were the Tribal Leaders in the Desert.  They share a common flaw.  In the sin of the Golden Calf only 3,000 people were guilty. Yet the entire Congregation were held accountable. The building of the Mishkan, the Tabernacle,  atoned for the Sin of the Eigal.  The Machatzit HaSheqel was a contribution of half a Sheqel that was used to count the people following the Sin of the Golden Calf.  This silver in turn was used as part of the building of the Mishkan. When the Torah speaks about the Machatzit HaSheqel, it says in  Exodus 30:15  "LeChaper al Nafshoseichim", to bring  repentance for their souls.  Why didn't the Torah say LeChaper Aleychem to bring repentance literally for them.  The reason Rabbi Yudin brings is because this contribution did not atone for the actual engagement of idol worship,  since those that actually involved in idol worship died prior to this, but rather was an atonement for their souls. Their wrongdoing was that they were passive, a stain on their souls.

The other example in this week's Parsha that Rabbi Yudin brought down is the mistake of the Nesiyim.  We know that they were lacking since there is a missing letter yud in their name. Apparently the Nesiyim, the leaders, told Moshe Rabbeinu according to the Midrash that they would bring all the material for the Mishkan. Hashem however wanted the contributions from all of Israel, not just the leaders. They then said that they would wait for the entire Nation to bring their gifts and then whatever was not brought, they would supplement.  Most fundraisers would be thrilled at this arrangement.  However, G-d found them lacking in that they were passive and did not initiate their own gifts but waited.

The repentance and rectification for such flaws is the opposite of passivity.  It is to be proactive and to take preemptive initiatives known as Zerizus.  In the case of the Nesiyim, this means being the first to speak out, the first to do the Mitzva! This they accomplished at the days of Inauguration  of the Tabernacle when they were quick to offer their gifts having learned from their mistake.

I will now apply these teachings to the Jewish Leadership of our days. The following post is painful in that it finds our Jewish Mainstream Organizations lacking.

However, like the Nesiyim of years gone by, may these Leaders as well rectify any lapses and be the most passionate, the most industrious and forthcoming to speak out with zealousness and properly guide the people in the just path of Torah and Mitzvoth!

Shabbat Shalom UmeVorach!
