Two Assassinations and the Demise of Israel

Prof. Paul Eidelberg

Introduction

This is a slightly abridged version of an essay I wrote the month following the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in November 1995.

Such was the hysterical Leftwing, and McCarthy-type aftermath of that tragic event, that little more than an allusion to that tragedy could then be published without raising hell and even self-incrimination since the assassin was a member of the Bar-Ilan university where I taught but, was then on a lecture tour in Detroit, and was thus bound to be invaded by journalists calling by phone. as they did even after I had left for New York, where I was known from my weekly columns in the nationally distributed Jewish Press.

Even now, my recounting of that event may evoke heated reactions among those whose intellect is but an instrument of their passions or partisan interests.

In any event, Israel's slain prime minister has since been sanctified. Much political capital was made, and is still being made, of his assassination. The political right and the religious continue to be demonized by the media, still dominated by the Left and its hostile emotions.

And yet, as I had surmised, it has become evident that Mr. Rabin may have been unwittingly responsible for his own demise. As Minister of Defense, Rabin also headed Israel's general security service (GSS). Some believe that the GSS may have authorized the criminal act of Avishai Raviv, the GSS agent who "handled" Yigal Amir, alleged to have been part of a conspiracy to defame the political right and the religious community – this,  to perpetuate the Left's control of the Government after the 1996 national elections. Mr. Rabin's public image was at stake and, with it, the political fortunes of the Left, and, most importantly, the strategic Oslo "territory for peace" process with which Rabin's name and fame are associated.

Indeed, I dare say, if the full truth were known about the Rabin assassination, Israel's entire system of government would collapse like a deck of cards. Desperate measures will still be taken by the elite to suppress the truth about that assassination. But we are also in dire need of some truth. Indeed, The time has come to examine Rabin's political character dispassionately as well as that of JFK's assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. The contrast may provide some impetus for constitutional reform of Israel's political system and thus preclude a repetition of the violence that ended Oswald's life and of John F. Kennedy. The contrast may be instructive. For the sake of analysis, i shall adopt the official position that Oswald was in fact JKK's assassin. Let us first contrast his political character with that of Amir.

Oswald, we know, was a communist. He seems to have been more or less identified with the Soviet Union, hence, not only with a foreign power, but the mortal enemy of his own country, the United States. Inasmuch as Oswald himself was murdered before the commencement of any judicial proceedings, we can only speculate about his motives. If Oswald was ideologically motivated, there was one episode of JFK's presidency that may have triggered the assassination, namely, the Cuban missile crisis.

Kennedy's superb handling of that crisis gave rise to speculation that Oswald, who had spent time in Moscow (as well as in Cuba), was recruited by the KGB to assassinate the president.   Whether this is so, or whether the KGB  employed the mafia for a simultaneous hit, I leave for others to ponder.  As concerns Oswald, however, we remain in the dark about his motives if they were not ideological.

In any event, one can hardly believe there was anything so radical or unprecedented about Kennedy's public statements or policies that would inflame a transform a law-abiding citizen into an assassin.  The political atmosphere in America in November 1963 was not saturated with widespread fear of national calamity (the case of Israel and Oswald in 1995).

There were no profound ideological cleavages among the American people. Americans harbored no agonizing resentment or deep feeling of betrayal resulting from some radical and unexpected reversal in the Kennedy administration's political philosophy or national goals. if Oswald was ideologically motivated, it's hard to see how his killing JFK would alter the course of American foreign policy to the advantage of the Soviet Union or of Communism.

This suggests (if purely personal motives are dismissed) that he was either "irrational" or that he served as the pawn of another party. Whatever Oswald's motives for assassinating JFK, patriotism or love of country was not one of them.  Contrast Rabin's assassin, Yigal Amir.

Amir, who served in the elite Golani brigade, was a member of the GSS, which, as previously noted, operates directly under the prime minister.  Had Amir been a Communist or a PLO sympathizer, he would not have been recruited by the GSS, a highly secret arm of Israel's Government. That the GSS employed Amir indicates that it regarded him as a most patriotic citizen.  Obviously Amir's love of country did not include Israel's Prime Minister.

Nevertheless, by condemning the assassination, it does not logically follow that one must reject the proposition that Amir, the act of murder aside, was not a patriotic Jew.  And yet, to say, without qualification, that Amir was a patriotic Jew is not consistent with condemning the assassination.  Accordingly, one would then have to say Amir was a misguided patriotic Jew.

I can almost hear the outrage this statement will arouse among emotional and impatient critics. But what would any unbiased person understand on hearing Amir described as a "misguided patriotic jew"?  Stated more simply, how would a disinterested and intelligent observer define a "misguided patriot"? Surely he would first define a patriot as a citizen who, though dedicated to the good of his country, was a misguided patriot as a citizen who, though subjectively dedicated to the good of his country, misconceived his country's good -- say on some basic issue – a misconception or error of judgment) that prompted him to commit an act detrimental to his country.  i do not think any fair-minded person will object to this definition.

Yet, to me, this definition is inadequate: it doesn't quite cover the subject, Yigal Amir, who is not just a citizen of Israel, but a Jew.  Amir violated not only the laws of the state; prima facie he violated the laws of the Torah, the prohibition against murder, the most heinous of crimes. An intellectually honest observer may nonetheless say this: to call Amir a misguided patriotic Jew is to say that, subjectively, he was dedicated to the Torah, but that his behavior, in the present case, conflicts with Israel's divine mission as a light unto the nations.  That would make Amir doubly culpable.

 Part II. Yitzhak Rabin

The previous definition of a patriotic Jew, even when his patriotism is misguided, has embarrassing implications. For to the extent that a patriotic Jew is one who believes in the Torah and in Israel's divine mission, this definition excludes most Jews, including, i am reluctant to say, the late Yitzhak Rabin!  Would that I could avoid this embarrassing but nonetheless logical conclusion regarding Israel's slain prime minister and thereby avoid offending those who mourn his death. My excuse in pursuing this painful inquiry -- contrasting the Rabin and Kennedy assassinations -- is to prevent Israel's destruction or self-destruction which, I dare say, as a political scientist, could occur in the near future.

Kennedy was the first Catholic President of the United States. He believed, or professed to believe, in God, and he repeatedly conveyed that belief to the public.  Mr. Rabin was Israel's first "sabra" or Israeli-born prime minister.  If he believed in God, it was a well-kept secret -- surely with tragic consequences for himself and for Israel, given the potentially salutary influence that Israel, as an authentic Jewish state, might have on mankind.

That Rabin, a sabra, was a practical atheist is of world-historical significance when juxtaposed to the 2,000-year suffering of the Jewish people. Not for one moment during all those centuries of dispersion and humiliation, of torture and genocide, did the Jew lose faith in God or forget Zion: "For the Lord thy God will return thy captivity and have compassion upon thee from all the peoples whither the Lord thy God hath scattered thee.  if any of thy dispersed be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will the lord thy god gather thee. . . . and the lord thy god will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed and thou shalt possess it" (Deuteronomy 30:3-5).

Yet the late Rabin disparaged religious Jews in the land of Israel as "foreign weeds."  He called religious Jews "degenerates" for opposing the surrender of land for which their forefathers yearned so long and for which so many Jews have bled and died. To my knowledge, Mr. Rabin holds the unenviable distinction of being perhaps the only head of state in history that publicly denigrated the heritage of his own people. This unheard of degradation of Judaism was not simply personal or a momentary pique.  It was the deliberate policy of the Rabin Government.

Under Rabin's authority as defense minister, the word "Judaism" was deleted from the Soldiers Code of Ethics.  So was the term "Zionism."  Rabin publicly disdained the Jewish attitude toward Eretz Yisroel.  "The Golan Heights," he said, "is not holy land but tank land."

He said as much about Judea and Samaria, the heartland of the Jewish people, which PM Netanyahu would yield via his "two-solution" to the Palestinian conflict. The same attitude animated his Labor colleague, Shimon Peres (who was Rabin's Foreign Minister) and who not only deplores the idea of "national borders," but also applied for srael's membership in the Arab League! Also, the Rabin Government's ambassador to the United Nations, Gad Yacobi, told a Harvard University audience in January 1995:  "there is no such thing as Jewish land; there are only Jewish people."

Consistent therewith, Mr.Peres (who later became Israel's President) defined Israel as the state of its citizens, not the state of the Jews. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that the goal of the Rabin-Peres Government was to convert Jews into "Israelis" such that Israel would no longer be identified as a "Jewish" state. Moreover, Rabin chose the erstwhilMeretz leader, Shulamit Aloni, as his Minister of Education, who disparaged "patriotism" and tried to implant this attitude into Israel's public school system!

(However, in fairness to Rabin and his leftist colleagues, it should be noted that they desperately wanted to accommodate Israel's Arab voters, who abhor living in ae  "Jewish" state.  Unfortunately, these Arabs refuse to identify themselves as "Israelis."  Indeed, they proudly call themselves "Palestinians."

Given that prime minister's negative attitude toward Judaism and Zionism, logic compels us to conclude he was less a patriotic Jew than a patriotic Israeli!

This disturbing but completely logical conclusion will provoke hostile emotions'  but one need not be Jewish to draw this conclusion; it speaks to us from Mr. Rabin's own words and policies. Nevertheless, I will surely be accused of right-wing bias if not of religious fanaticism by those who allow their intellects to be governed by their passions or partisan interests.  They may even accuse me of mitigating the culpability of his assassin.  Nonsense!  One can think of many alienated and even repugnant Jewish politicians without wishing to see them dead, let alone assassinated.

If it is politically divisive  or construed as "incitement" to discuss a politician's divisive and provocative statements, or if it is "seditious" to indicate that, regardless of an Israelis patriotic intentions, his releasing Arab terrorists not only endangered his fellow citizens but constitutes a clear violation of international law, then let us put an end to the current pretense about Israeli democracy.

I have said that Mr. Rabin was an Israeli patriot.  I have now suggested that he was a misguided one.  Writing before Rabin's assassination, Louis Rene Beres, a professor of international law as well as a political scientist, points out that "the Oslo agreements do not constitute treaties because they link a state with a nonstate party. . . . [b]ecause the nonstate party in this case happens to be a terrorist organization whose leaders must be punished for egregious crimes. Any agreement with this party that offers rewards rather than punishment is entirely null and void. Indeed, in view of the peremptory expectation known in law as nullum crimen sine poena, "no crime without a punishment," the state party in such an agreement – in this case the state of Israel  – violates international law by honoring the agreement."

Nor is this  all. Beres writes in the sequel:  "terrorist crimes mandate universal cooperation in apprehension and punishment. As  punishers of 'grave breaches' under international law (defined at the fourth Geneva Convention), all states and other legal 'persons' are expected to search out and prosecute or extradite for prosecution, individual perpetrators.  This assuredly does not mean holding hands and signing documents on the White House lawn.  The 'good offices' of the United States do not in any way mitigate Israel's legal failings in this matter; rather, it simply makes one more state – the United States of America – complicit in this failure."

Viewed in this light, Mr. Rabin (and this applies to Mr. Peres) appears to have violated international law by rewarding the PLO, a criminal organization responsible for the murder not only of Jews but of Americans. The Rabin-Peres Government rewarded the PLO with parts of the land of Israel, with Jewish taxpayers money, and even with deadly weapons subsequently used against Jews!

Not that such a violation of international law would justify the assassination of any member of Israel's government (to say nothing of the President of the United States or any member of the American congress that voted to reward the PLO with a grant of 500 million dollars).  but when leaders of sovereign states reward a terrorist gang that has slaughtered innocent men, women, and children, it seems to me paradoxical or hypocritical, perhaps even self-serving, to have been so mortified by the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, as if he bore no responsibility for the death of others, whatever his noble intentions.

Reasons for Rabin's sanctification

Of course the assassination of a head of state strikes at the foundation of civilized society, assuming, of course, that he himself is not a tyrant, that he himself does not trample upon man's God-given rights to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. No civilized society can endure if punctuated by political assassinations. This is why even self-regarding people appear so morally outraged and horrified by such acts.

Ponder, therefore, the glorification of Rabin that followed his assassination.  Nothing quite like it adorned the slain president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.  Rabin was extolled as one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century, the hero of the six day war, a saint, the noble and fearless architect of peace.  Professor Henry Kissinger described him as a "humble" man, an "honest" man, a "gentle" man, a man of "vision."  Kissinger went so far as to say of Rabin:  "Like Moses, he did not live to reach the promised land."  What greater praise -- some would say obtuseness -- than Kissinger's juxtaposing Rabin with mankind's greatest teacher and law-giver!  Meanwhile, Rabbi Norman Lamm, president of Yeshiva University, felt obliged to eulogize Israel's slain prime minister despite the latter's degradation of orthodox Judaism.  Why all this adulation?

It is a matter of civilized decency to emphasize the good deeds of a deceased person, even to exaggerate his virtues.  all the more so for a fallen head of state, whose character, it may be presumed, is a reflection of the character of his country. The case of Rabin, however, poses a painful paradox.  Here we behold the head of a Jewish state whose Jewishness he wished to erase; the head of a state in which 51 percent of its Jewish population (as per one poll) believes in the divine origin of the Torah; a head of state whose policy of territorial withdrawal utterly betrayed the solemn pledges he made to the nation in the 1992 pre-election campaign; a head of state whose Government represented perhaps as little as 33% of Israel's Jewish population in terms of their basic and untrammeled political and religious convictions; a head of state who came to power only by virtue of the support of Arab Knesset members committed to Israel's dismemberment; a head of state who, as mentioned previously, scorned the tradition of his own people.

Nevertheless, although it was appropriate that Israel's slain prime minister be eulogized, those eulogies, for the above reasons, strike a profoundly discordant note to any morally sensitive but unbiased observer.  This cannot readily be said of the eulogies pronounced over John F. Kennedy who, though not a paragon of virtue, affirmed belief in God and respected the tradition of his people.

I do not say this to disparage Mr. Rabin, whom i regard as a tragic figure -- tragic for having been slain by a Jew; tragic for having failed to see what Gentiles like John Adams and even Nietzsche saw in the Jewish people, namely, that they have no equal in history, indeed, that they are the teachers of mankind.  But there is something else to be said of the sanctification of Rabin following his assassination.  Rabin was magnified as a great statesman, a saint, and a hero to render all the more damnable not only his assassin, but opponents of the now deified peace process.  anyone who has read authoritative accounts of Rabin's military record and predictions will have reason to regard him as something less than a hero, let alone a saint.

By no means, however, does this mitigate the criminal nature of Aamir's deed.  As a political scientist, however, I deem it important to examine the political context of that deed. Clearly Mr. Rabin and his colleagues created a climate of hatred and resentment as well as life-threatening circumstances conducive to violence:  (1) vilifying religious and non-religious Jews for opposing a peace process that had already witnessed, at the time of Rabin's death, the murder of 162 Jews and the wounding of 800 more; (2) releasing thousands of Arab terrorists, some of whom went on to murder more Jews; (3) callously calling these Jewish victims "sacrifices for peace"; (4) arming 25,000 unrepentant Arab terrorists to prevent terrorist attacks in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza; (5) yielding, again and again, to the demands of Yasser Arafat, whose commitment to Israel's destruction was incontrovertible; (6) allowing the PLO to establish a virtual capital in eastern Jerusalem -- all this inflamed the atmosphere that conduced to Rabin's assassination.

Add the complicity of the GSS in creating this inflammatory state of affairs: how Avishai Raviv (presumably with the Prime Minister's approval) was used to incite public hatred against the political right, i.e., the nationalist-religious camp, at a time when polls indicated only 23 percent was in favor of Rabin's Oslo or "land-for-peace" policy.

(Was it the intention of the Lleft to convey to the general public the impression that the Right wanted to foment a civil war?  Conversely, did the Left itself seek to provoke a civil war out of political desperation?  i raise this question because the Left sees that its electoral base among Jews is constantly shrinking.  tens of thousands of secular Jews leave Israel every year, while another thirty thousand have abortions.  This makes the Left increasingly and utterly dependent on Arab voters and Arab partieד to gain and retain power.  Nevertheless, with the precipitous decline in public support of the Rabin government and with the 1996 national elections looming ahead, something drastic had to be done by the Left to discredit the Right, such as using Avishai Raviv as a provocateur.  But nothing could have been better calculated to discredit the Right than the assassination of Israel's prime minister by an orthodox Jew.)

Two Political Systems

Consider, now, the witch-hunt, the repression of dissent, the incarceration of outspoken and not-so-outspoken critics of the deified peace process -- and all in the name of saving Israeli democracy.  Not an iota of this sort of thing occurred after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, even though his assassin was a Communist.  There was no purge of left-wing professors in American colleges and universities; no urging of students, parents, and faculty to report teachers who expressed "extreme" left-wing views; no placing of left-wingers under "administrative arrest" for months at a time without trial or notification of the charges; no indictment of persons for having expressed criticism of the government two or three years before the assassination; no cynical exploitation of a tragedy to retain political power.

Strikingly different the aftermaths of the two assassinations!  Why?  why did dignified calm follow the assassination of president Kennedy?  why was there no political hysteria, no witch-hunt, no repression?

Why?  Because the United states is a genuine democracy, one governed by the rule of law.  Why?  Because America's founding fathers, the framers of the American Constitution, respected the biblical tradition, which honors and protects the inalienable rights of the individual.  Why?  because this tradition, which the Jewish people bestowed on mankind, proclaims the existence of a higher law, a law to which the laws of parliaments and kings must conform if they are to command our loyalty.

In contrast, the founders of the modern state of israel were for the most part Marxists, hence atheists.  As atheists they rejected the biblical tradition which has made the United States the greatest power on earth  –  now falin because the American people  have been corrupted by the University-bred doctrine of multicultural moral relativism. For these atheists, a Jew's highest loyalty is not to God, but to "democracy" -- their fig-leaf for a veritable oligarchy.

What has all this to do with the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin?  Very much, I'm afraid. Contrary to almost universal opinion, and despite periodic multiparty elections, Israel is not and never has been a genuine democracy.  (1) Israel does not have a written constitution with institutional checks and balances.  (2) Unlike 74 reputed democracies, Israel does not have constituency elections that would make legislators accountable to the voters (as is the case of Great Britain, which also lacks a constitution, but has a well-established legal tradition).  (3) Israel's system of fixed party lists makes Knesset members subservient to their party leaders who head the cabinet ministries.  (4) Israel's Government can make agreements with foreign entities without serious public debate and even without Knesset debate.  (5) Israel's Supreme Court is not only a self-perpetuating oligarchy; it is the only court in the free world that ignores the moral and legal heritage of its own people. (6) Israel's educational and cultural institutions as well as its news media are dominated by secularists.

This overwhelming concentration of political-economic and opinion-making power in the hands Israel's interlocking elites offers no redress and no outlet for rational and effective political dissent between elections.  This is why an increasing number of Israelis, feeling helpless, and having grown cynical, frustrated, and desperate, turn to actions outside an ostensibly democratic process that has turned corrupt and illegitimate. It is in this light that we are to understand why Israeli politics has ever been so acrimonious, so vicious, so impervious to civilized debate -- and yes, to the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin!

This undemocratic and oppressive state of affairs did not give Yigal Amir a license to murder Yitzhak Rabin.  But unless Israel undergoes a truly democratic transformation, that is, unless a Jewish constitutional democracy is established in this country, he Arabs will turn Israel into a killing ground.◙

Israel is facing a grave "king" crisis. Never mind the Muslim terrorists stabbing, slashing and shooting any Jews in range. The real threat was uncovered by Shabak's Jewish section, a gang of Jewish youths had plotted to "appoint a king". It's a lucky thing that Shabak had prevented the "return of the king" through the usual measures of planting informants and torturing detainees.

Just think, if they hadn't arrested and detained those "right-wing extremists", Israelis today might be forced to take orders from an undemocratic king instead of an undemocratic Supreme Court.

After Rabin's death, Kikar Malchei Yisrael, the Square of the Kings of Israel, was renamed Kikar Rabin. The kings of Israel had to make way for the eternal celebrations of outrage for the murder of the Labor PM at the hands of a pawn of a Shabak employee. That killing led to the same ritual cries about the threat of "right-wing extremism" which was somehow worse than the "left-wing extremism" whose pandering to terrorism had killed over 100 Israelis since Oslo.

It's a lot more than 100 today. And center-right prime ministers have come and gone with bold promises and only made things worse.  The regular chants of "Insert name here melech yisrael" at political conventions don't lead to any arrests. Though considering their tackiness maybe they should.

Still ex-Shabak boss Carmi Gillon has reemerged to cry "We're at a worse point than before the assassination of Rabin." Not in the sense that the terrorists set off by his old boss can now bombard Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. But in the sense that more "right-wing extremists" are noticing it.

The star of The Gatekeepers, along with five other major Shabak bosses, is an expert on "right-wing extremism". Just ask Avishai Raviv, the Shabak informant who set up the "extreme right-wing" group Eyal, whose videos of blood oaths, Rabin-killing practice and claims of responsibility for assorted attacks that the fake group had nothing to do with made for great left-wing television. The drama climaxed with the killing of Rabin by a man whom Raviv had urged, "Be a man. Kill Rabin."

In the midst of the crackdown on "right-wing extremism", the agonized bewailing by center-right leaders about all the horrible "extremism" in their camp, it turned out that Raviv, the man in the "Rabin is a Traitor" t-shirts and Rabin in a Nazi uniform poster at a Netanyahu rally was working for Shabak's "Gatekeepers." And Shabak had to stop arresting people for telling politically incorrect Rabin jokes and figures on the center-right had to stop writing self-denounciations for thought-crimes.

But we are told that this sort of thing doesn't happen anymore. At least that's what Naftali Bennett assures us. Never mind the Susiya entrapment case which just wrapped up this month. Shabak doesn't do this sort of thing anymore. Except when it does. Bennett claims that the detainees want to "dismantle the foundations of the state." Shouldn't they be in the Knesset then?

If you want to plot to "dismantle the foundations of the state", the right place for you is at the Haaretz conference, not a Shabak basement. Alongside ex-Shabakniks also plotting to "dismantle the foundations of the state". President Rivlin, who attended the conference alongside anti-Israel groups that are actually plotting to dismantle the state, without appointing any kings, calls the radical left-wing paper, "one of the most important papers for the existence of Israeli democracy."

One of Haaretz's prize journalists, Gideon Levy, calls for the destruction of Israel, defends Hamas and promotes BDS. David Landau, the former Haaretz editor, told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Israel was a "failed state" and urged her to "rape" Israel. "I told [Rice] that it had always been my wet dream to see this happen," he said.

Nobody in Shabak detained Landau without charge and then imposed a court order to prevent his name from being published. Nobody worked him over in a basement for plotting to "dismantle the foundations of the state". Instead Rivlin eulogized the dead monster by saying "it was a pleasure to be his friend". The Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel which are tripping over themselves to call for more arrests of "right-wing extremists" showered more love on the dead terror pimp.

Left-wing extremism never seems to lead to any arrests. If you meet with terrorists illegally and wreck the country, like Yossi Beilin, or call for the murder of Jews on the right, like Peace Now co-founder Yigal Tumarkin, or even openly support terrorists like Hanin Zoabi, you will not find yourself in a Shabak basement somewhere being worked over by two grinning gorillas until you sign anything they tell you to.

Instead you'll wallow in EU cash, in literary and political awards, in newspaper columns and tributes. And even those on the center-right will say that your views may be terrible, but in person you're a surprisingly charming and thoughtful fellow.

There's never a left-wing extremist threat. Instead it's a grave threat that a dozen teenagers in some small village will spray graffiti or protest police brutality or appoint a king. And if they don't do it on their own, a dozen Shabak informants who have gotten into debt or petty crime will make sure that they get around to doing it so that the left-wing security state and the sellout center-right can scream their heads off about the "right-wing" threat.

Now the threat is back again.

The headlines are full of reports of "right-wing extremists" being rounded up and held without trial for such crimes as protesting other "right-wing extremists" being rounded up and held without trial. There's a poorly edited wedding video that purports to show a photo of something or other being stabbed by someone. Which is proof enough for more indefinite detentions for the case that never seems to actually come to trial. And petitions in support of Shabak.

There's a petition  by 47 Rabbis "We support the fighters of the Shabak and all the security arms protecting our state, in plucking from the roots all expressions of Jewish terror. as this is crucial."

From the roots. All the way down.

Ya'alon demands the ritual "soul-searching" and warns that there are "implications to ignoring the rule of law  even in minor instances, such as illegal building in Judea and Samaria or those who raised their voices against the High Court of Justice." There are implications to Ya'alon's implications too. The implication is that political opposition to undemocratic institutions is itself a crime.

And, of course, the Rabbis must be investigated. Not Arik Ascherman and his group. But the pro-Israel kind of Rabbis.

All this for a case in which there are still no real charges, no real trial and no real evidence. In lieu of these things, a blurry video runs non-stop on television and an army of public figures rises to denounce the threat.

The Duma case was a joke from the start. The rash of fires in the Arab village were part of a clan rivalry. The official version of the crime couldn't have even physically happened. But the left had its agenda and the center-right, Netanyahu and Bennett had discredited themselves by failing to accomplish anything tangible, and so jumped on board to silence right-wing critics.

The only way to keep the Duma hoax alive is to extract confessions from someone, anyone. Shabak claims to be using "ticking time bomb" torture methods to extra these confessions. But after all this time where is the bomb ticking? The bomb is political. No one wants to fight Islamic terrorism and certainly no one is going to start locking up left-wingers for trying to "dismantle the foundations of the state". That just leaves the easy target, angry and upset teens and twenty-somethings, whose ethnic cleansing is constantly called for by the left and its international backers.

With enough torture, someone will confess to plotting to appoint a king, setting all of Duma on fire and even photoshopping Rivlin in a Nazi uniform. The center-right will bewail how "we" have become capable of such extremism. The left will demand even more powers for Shabak to fight the "right-wing threat" before its next boss heads off to a Haaretz conference.

Ex-Shabak boss Ami Ayalon endorsed Breaking the Silence (not to mention nukes for Iran) as did ex-Shabak boss Yuval Diskin. Shabak bosses can wage war against Israel and the IDF, yet no one is going to arrest them for trying to undermine the foundations of the state. Certainly they won't wind up in their own basement being worked over.

We have once again found the "enemy within". It's not the Muslims and their left-wing collaborators, but another phony right-wing terror group, that when examined closely will no doubt have an unfavorable ratio of Shabak agent provocateurs to actual members. But we can't fight the PLO or Hamas. We can't fight the New Israel Fund or Breaking the Silence. Or their Shabak pals. But we can always take another whack at the dangling pinata of "right-wing extremism" which, on close examination, turns out to be manufactured by the extremist left-wing establishment.

And then it'll be time for another Haaretz conference and the destruction of Israel

Bsd
Rabbanim, amvsh
Isnt there a Mitzvah of Pikuach Nefesh, Pidyon Shvuyim and Al Taamod al Dam Reyacha here which takes precedence to all other Mitzvoth even Limud Torah? Is the legal system in Israel with self appointed  judges, anti Torah Bias according to your liking? Shtika keHodaya Damya.
Is this simply a matter of politics justifying you ignoring their situation in prison and reports of being tortured.
Do u  concur with Shabak that they are Jewish terrorists without evidence, without access to a lawyer with a biased judge?

Open letter to Caroline Glick. Shabak staged Jewish Terror Dance and Duma Suspects and Hilltop Youth Framed

Bsd
Dear Caroline Glick, amvsh
I have come to a conclusion and Shabak has come to a different conclusion.  I have concluded there are no Jewish terrorists.  Shabak has concluded there are.  You have sided with Shabak.I will therefore explain the situation to prove that Shabak is framing settlers rather that accept their conclusion there are Jewish terrorists. Shabak creates the situation to support their conclusion that there are Jewish terrorists where there are no rules and the end justifies the means.
Kahana ideology from what I remember when i lived in KA in 1980s was that they believed rhetoric was justified to prevent terror.  So even though they wouldnt actually go to a random bus and throw a molotov cocktail and murder innocent Arabs, they did not object to rhetoric mimicing Arab behavior, learned from the Arabs behavior, to make Arabs afraid of them. This is the language Arabs understand is their justification.
Stabbing a picture is not stabbing a baby.
If you call someone a terrorist when they are not, especially teens, and I can attest first hand of a reaction of a 15 yr old kid being thrown out of Yeshiva bc he broke mpl rules with friends like cutting class to go to a pizza shop after his Rebbe deceived him or seen publicly talking to a random  girl after specifically being told it was against the rules just to break a rule he considers dumb and sneaking a bottle of alcohol into a dorm for fun, plotting with friends a fireworks display on the roof of the Yeshiva, using inappropriate language etc is accused of being a bad kid a bad influence, will give a bad name to the Yeshiva and a kid who will destroy the religiosity of other good boys and therefore they justify expelling him wo a safety net in place, his reaction is to say "if they really think Im so bad I will show them how bad I am, he will take off his Kippa, use the foulist language he can think of and draw obscene graffitti and try his very hardest to make them see how very bad, bad really is compared to the pranks he did before.  Then when he is actually on the streets with all the other former Yeshiva kids who were thrown out, each from a different Yeshiva, one because he smoked hookah and another cause he had a facebook page and another cause he had a girlfriend and they meet seasoned truants who are smoking weed, addictions both prescription and non prescription and stealing and talking like a cesspool it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.  But the difference is these kids excel in VeAhavta LeRayacha Kamocha - Po Lo Maznichim Chaver. Acronym Palmach, like their Yeshivas did.  So when their friend is sinking in quicksand, they become his lifeline risking their own life and they dont let go.
The ones who created the monsters are those who called them terrorists to begin with.  The truth is that there is not an ounce of evil in their veins.  However i would seriously investigate Shabak provocateurs who were paid to stage this Jewish Terror dance just like drug dealers are at the scene of very vulnerable kids recently thrown out of Yeshiva to entrap them.
Your editorial fell into their trap. You started off good talking about Raviv but then you veered off course completely and did more damage to these abused kids, the ones thrown out of Gush Katif when they were between the ages of 5-15 who lost faith in their Rabbinic leaders, their govt for very good reason. Now their friends are being tortured. They want to join their friends in the quicksand and be their lifeline.
They have turned to Hashem and beg Him to return judges as of days of old and for G-d to be once again the King of the world, they pray for the Davidic Kingdom and for the Temple service.
If u were this kind of idealistic kid, from a beautiful family, how would you feel towards a govt guilty of intolerable acts and I am not talking of taxation wo representation.
I wonder if Amos and Rabbi Sorotzkin and Maoz Tzur and Shemoneh Esreh are all in cahoots with these Jewish Terrorists, responsible for their "radicalization".
You, Caroline Glick, the voice of reason have not been thrown into the dungeon to need G-d as desperately as these kids apparently.  You can not relate to their desperation. This of course would  never happen probably bc u are not stupid enough to be the lifeline of someone in a sinkhole.  But I hope when u are hurting, nobody puts salt on your wounds...
Sincerely,
Robin Ticker

Naftali Bennett:
Duma suspects 'tried to dismantle Israel'. Jewish Home leader defends Shin Bet interrogation of suspects, says they prevented 'Duma2.'  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/205357#.VnqqDPkrJdg
In Rebuttal:

I totally disagree with Bennett. Actually I believe Shin Bet interrogations of these hilltop youth will create Duma 2 and Duma 3 and Duma 4 etc. or until this charade comes to  a halt.   If these Jewish Hilltop boys are innocent as I believe they are, and the perpetrators are indeed Arab, which I believe they are, than there is much to gain for Arabs to learn from this "success" story and copy this modus operandi.  From this incident they have learned that if they wish to eliminate feuding Arab rivals, which is not unheard of in their circles,  they can simply do so by arson and then frame Jewish Hilltop youth with simply writing some Hebrew graffiti at the scene of the crime. This way they can eliminate 2 enemies, the Arab enemy with whom they are feuding and some random Jewish hilltop kids who like to settle Judea and Samaria.  A bargain.. 2  for the price of one and the best part about it is that the Shabak will do half the dirty work and investigate and torture Jewish youth and let the real Arab arsonist/terrorist off scot-free...

I expected better from Bennett.  All the times he spoke so eloquently about the settlers was it lip service? Does he have intelligence regarding Jewish terrorist activities that their parents or grandmother, aunts and relatives don't have other than a confession made under duress?  Maybe he should pay a visit to these relatives now rather than wait for Shiva calls. We know that Bennett is quite good at eulogies of  dead settlers. But on judgement day, the heavenly court will judge him on how good he was in preventing  tragic deaths due to terror attacks, not on how wonderfully he eulogized.

Now about the Vigil of Conscience in front of the Israel Embassy:

We stood in front of the Israeli Consulate a group of stalwart activists under the leadership of Helen Freedman and staged a Vigil of Conscience.  Helen spoke about how she knows these Hilltop youth and what a beautiful bunch of kids they are.  The exact opposite of the way they are portrayed in the Media. I am sure she knows these kids better than Naftali Bennett. She literally was in tears for having to speak about such disturbing reports of Jews  against Jews. It puts the govt of Israel whom we care about and hold dear as we do our own family in a very negative light. But sometimes even with family we need to take a stand if they make a terrible mistake.  And we are all human said Helen.

Doesn't Naftali Bennett know the power of Dibah Raah, false and untrue accusations and testimony.  Isn't one of the 10 commandments, Thou shall not bear false witness? It can literally destroy a person. How dare Bennett falsely accuse these Jewish suspects of being  arsonists?
What is wrong with this quote from Arutz7. Maybe it was a typo.
Bennett said everyone in Israel has been exposed to the reported torture the suspects are undergoing at the hands of the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), and went on to call the suspects "terror suspects. They burned people in their sleep with the goal of dismantling the state."
If he himself calls them suspects why did he then say that they burned people in their sleep with the goal of dismantling the state.  Were they convicted? Also, how in heavens name does he know their motive?

Who is Bennett or Ayelet Shaked to convict Jewish kids without a trial or evidence when they are denied a lawyer and tortured? How can he justify these kids having an Arab Judge assigned to their case, clearly with an anti settler bias who is not interested in finding out who the real arsonists are,  never investigating other leads that might lead into the Arab village itself. He relies upon the PA for the investigation of Arab suspects and the foregone conclusion that surely it was the hilltop youth of Judea and Samaria.  Another nasty thought comes to mind. Maybe it was a Shabak setup?

The aunt of one of the kids living here described how this just turned 17 year old (same age as Yosef when he was thrown into the pit by his well meaning brothers) told the judge to just write up a confession with all the details of where and how it happened and he'll sign it cause he can't take the torture anymore. So now we know how the State got a confession.  The kid becomes a false witness against himself.  I hope they are very proud of this accomplishment. His aunt said that he cut his wrists and tried to commit suicide.

The Shabak denied reports of the attempted suicide.

Any clear thinking individual who believes a 16 year old kid was responsible for the attack in Duma, can't but help conclude that he wanted to commit suicide. Why else would he risk his life by going into a closed Arab town, setting fire to some random Arab's house and write Graffiti as a Kahanist. Surely that alone would have alerted the Arabs who would have lynched him.  But "miraculously" nobody noticed. He or his friend(s)  also wrote some graffiti as a Chabad Mashichist.  Wait...is he a radical Kahanist who wants to overthrow the gov't of Israel or a radical Yechi HaMelech Chabad terrorist who wants to overthrow the gov't of Israel?  Quite delusional for a 16 year old to believe that he is so powerful to succeed such lofty goals.  The question is why does the State of Israel feel so threatened with such a crazy kid who actually would have the nerve to attempt such a suicide mission. Then there is a plausible theory that a Shabak agent whose goal is to delegitimize the Hilltop youth planted the graffiti to make it appear as a price tag terror attack.

Let's continue with this line of reasoning that the Hilltop Youth actually impulsively went into Duma, into the center of the village,  and committed this terror arson attack and quite miraculously  didn't get caught nor lynched by the Arabs.  Couldn't they have just picked the closest house to the edge of the village to make a quick escape.  Nor is there evidence placing them at the scene of the crime.  They must have magical powers that enabled them to escape unnoticed from the center of town following a fire.  Wait maybe there were 15 such hilltop kids setting the fire in Duma.  If you take 15 kids and torture them all, then by statistical probability at least 1 or 2 will break and sign a confession.  According to this theory, they are impulsive youth with a deep hatred of Arabs.

How come when Arabs commit an act of terror there is always a camera around documenting the terror attack.

Lucky them.  In Duma there were no cameras and no people who were awakened by this terrible fire who could have spotted them. But surely the Hilltop Youth couldn't have known that they would escape unscathed by this terror attack.  Jihad is not a Jewish concept.  Jews generally don't want to die as martyrs .  Given this very dangerous operation in enemy territory, in the middle of an Arab Village, which set a home on fire and burnt to death a family  of 3, one can easily come to the conclusion that these kids were probably insane and suicidal.  Again, had they been Arab we could have attributed it to Jihad....Radical Islam..

Why Shabak denies that this minor contemplated suicide,  is beyond me.  But then again, they don't want to incriminate themselves of murder of an innocent teen.

lets continue with the analysis....
Obviously the family, must be a breeding ground of Jewish Terrorists since this kid wouldn't just become one in a vacuum...

Therefore, his aunt and cousin were also interrogated for several days and are still having nightmares of this encounter with Shabak.  His aunt who is a principal of a school was basically threatened with her job since she wasn't more helpful with their investigation.  They told her if she didn't notice a "change in his behavior" at the time of  a family Simcha she is not fit to be an educator. I suppose the Simcha was at the same time that the arson in Duma occurred. She said she would love to help them but she simply has no information that they wished to hear. The yelled spit and degraded her for 3 days...

This family is the most Tzioni as they come.  The American grandmother, Blumi Odess, who was there at the AFSI Vigil told us that they made Aliya after the 67 war to help Israel restore losses as a result of the war. She described leaving successful careers.  She now shares her time with her children who live in the States and in Israel.  A model family.  Her grandson Elisha has dual citizenship.

Why would anyone want to come on Aliya after hearing this story?

People might be afraid of coming on Aliya because instead of recognition and appreciation for having sacrificed everything to move to Israel,  one day their grandchild might be interrogated unjustly by the Shabak and tortured.

Others upon hearing this story won't want to make Aliya for an entirely different reason. They are now afraid that if they come on Aliya, idealistic, leaving their successful careers behind, wanting to build the country they will become radicalized in the hills of Judea and Samaria and one day their grandson might become a hilltop youth settler terrorist, develop a  hate for all Arabs, and ultimately will want to set some random Arabs home on fire and dismantle Israel.

Getting back to reality of this particular case:

This family too would like to know who committed the arson.  Forced confessions by minors is not the way and is a stain on Israel's justice system said the kids uncle who happens to be a lawyer. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/205395#.VnumjPkrJdi

At the Vigil, I read a translation of Chief Rabbi of Bet El, Rabbi Melameds letter to the G-d fearing MKs and wrote said that this is a matter of Pikuach Nefesh  (saving a life in danger) as well as Pidyon Shvuyim (Mitzvah to redeem a captive) which is keneged, equivalent, to  the entire Torah. He said that if this is the case, the MK's should not be part of such a govt.

I also read a post written by  Elyashuv Har Shalom of Kol Hayehudi.  He wrote Jews are not terrorists.   http://www.hakolhayehudi.com/jews-are-not-terrorists/
2:15  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/205395#.VnumjPkrJdi

Jews are not the source of terror. He then described Arab terror that blows up buses, kidnapped, murdered dozens of soldiers and children, that stab, massacre and drive into men women and children (he forgot to mention Arab lynchings and using their own children as  human shields and glorify jihad among his list. He also didn't bring up Muslim sanctioned perverted lifestyle (see videos of Isis and what they have done to the Yezhidi men, women and children population) nor their hate education. (PMW) He compared this Terror culture to Jewish terror which consists of graffiti,  punctured tires, and broken tree branches.

28 days this kid is sitting in the pit of Shabak interrogation rooms...5 months they are still manufacturing evidence to prove that he is a real Jewish terrorist of the Arab type. No success yet...except a forced confession.... Wonder why not...
Ain Chadash Tachat Hashemesh.  Nothing is new.
Yosef too was misjudged by his brothers.  They paid a steep price.
Those who are compassionate to the cruel will ultimately be cruel to the compassionate.  This is a phenomenon that occurs says the Midrash...and we see it not only with Shaul but right now with these kids....

Examples of Being Compassionate to the Cruel
  • Israel Medical Association says that medics should treat terrorists before victims according to the rules of triage.
  • Engaging in warfare that endangers IDF soldiers in order to save enemy civilian
  • Compassion on a terrorist when he is down, only to have him attack once again, another example...
  • Not dealing forcefully with the terrorists but rather dealing forcefully with Settler Hilltop Youth
