Today's Commentary: Michelle Obama Is Not Happy -- More Crazy Political Correctness -- A VA Ruling You Might Have Missed
READ THIS NEWSLETTER ON MIKEHUCKABEE.COM.
Robin,
Michelle Obama is not happy about the move to roll back her healthy school lunch mandates. While I agree with her that kids shouldn't be allowed to dictate their menus and eat pizza and ice cream every day, that wasn't really the problem. I welcomed her to my TV show in the beginning to discuss this topic because I am an advocate for healthier eating and lifestyles (still the best way to keep medical costs down for everyone). But just as kids need a balanced diet, there also has to be a balance between healthy standards and taste. It would be healthy to serve kids a plate of steamed kale every day, but if it goes straight into the trash can, it's not doing their bodies any good. The goal of the initiative should have been to help local schools make cafeteria lunches healthier and more appealing, not to impose stringent, complicated federal mandates from 1,000 miles away, forcing them to prioritize meeting government standards over serving up food that students could eat without gagging.
This argument is a good reflection of a lot of what's going on with political discourse on all sorts of issues. One side insists it's right and wants Washington to impose its viewpoint on everyone, while the other side resists and refuses to swallow what Washington is dishing out.
Sincerely,
Mike Huckabee

-- More Crazy Political Correctness
By Mike Huckabee
Just when you think political correctness on college campuses can't get any more idiotic and totalitarian, the editors of the Portland State University newspaper fired a student reporter for accurately quoting what a Muslim student said at a public forum about his own religion's treatment of non-Muslims in some Muslim nations – which was also accurate. By the way, the quote was posted on Twitter. The paper rejected even printing the story. The editor allegedly accused the reporter of being "predatory" and "reckless" and putting the Muslim student and his family at risk of violence by implying that they advocated the killing of atheists. Which obviously wasn't what happened at all: the student was just accurately describing what happens in some Muslim nations, and the reporter quoted him accurately.
It appears that to this campus paper, promoting the preferred PC narrative is more important than reporting the facts, so anyone interested in telling the public what really happened has to turn to Twitter to bypass the media. Wow, they really are preparing students for a career in modern journalism!

A VA Ruling You Might Have Missed
By Mike Huckabee
I tweeted about this story several days ago in hopes it would stir up some media attention and public outrage, but it was largely ignored, even though it about 10,000 times more outrageous than the long-overdue firing of James Comey. A federal court ruled this week that the firing of the woman in charge of the Phoenix VA clinic that was at the heart of the waiting list death scandal was unconstitutional. She could even appeal to be rehired now.
She wasn't even fired because veterans were kept waiting for medical care until they died, or for allegedly falsifying records to cover it up. She was fired after being convicted of accepting thousands of dollars in undeclared gifts from a lobbyist and sentenced to two years' probation. First, a court ruled that she could keep over $9000 in bonuses she got from taxpayers during that time, and now, her later firing has been ruled unconstitutional. You'll have to follow the link to see the reasoning. Although frankly, I've read the ruling and the Constitution (many times) and somehow missed the part that says incompetent, criminal federal workers can't be fired. I can't imagine the Founders even thinking that should be inferred from the Constitution.
This past week, some leaders of the public employees union were calling for stronger protections for federal workers who fear being fired by political officer holders (like the guy Americans sent to Washington partly because they wanted him to say, "You're fired" a few thousand times.) Is there any other industry in the world where you can literally have people die on your watch, lie to cover it up, and still keep your job and get a bonus? (Or run for President?) If James Comey and this woman can't be fired, then who in blazes CAN be?
It is time for Congress to enact serious reform of government union contracts, but not to make it harder to fire people. In the real world, there's a word for such firings that currently doesn't exist inside the government bubble: "accountability."

Shalom Friends,
It has been a very productive and "refreshing" past couple of weeks in Im Tirtzu, and I wanted to share with you some of the most recent developments.
The Israeli Public Rallies Around Im Tirtzu and Coca Cola
Last week, the radical Left attempted to discredit Im Tirtzu by spinning a story about how in 2015, the movement received a 50,000 shekel donation from the Central Bottling Company in Israel, better known as Coca Cola.
The news was immediately followed by cries of "boycott Coca Cola" from the radical Left – but, what they did not expect was the outpour of support that the people of Israel gave to both Im Tirtzu and Coca Cola.
Following the news, countless pictures and memes were posted on social media in support of Im Tirtzu. The outpower of support was truly amazing, and we were even more pleased to see how the people of Israel embrace the values of Zionism and reject the anti-Zionist values of the radical left.
Attached is a collage of a small portion of the photos.
In Yom HaZikaron Editorial, Haaretz Attacks Im Tirtzu
As I have mentioned in the past, perhaps the best way to gauge the current impact of Im Tirtzu is to look what the "other side" is saying. This is what Haaretz newspaper had to say in its editorial published on Yom HaZikaron:
"But this promise [of equality] has been replaced by an occupation regime in the territories, and is under violent attack within Israel itself by the government — a government of the right-wing Im Tirztu organization."
I have no intention to give credence to the substance of their article, but to focus on how they, representing the dominant anti-Zionist force in Israel, perceive Im Tirtzu's influence on the government.
We will continue working hard to defend the values of Zionism in Israel, regardless of what Haaretz and the anti-Zionists thinks.
Emergency Knesset Session on Academic Politicization in Ben-Gurion University
An emergency Knesset session was called for next week to discuss politicization in Ben-Gurion University, following the University's promotion of a program run by an anti-Israel NGO teaching students how to provoke security forces during protests.
Im Tirtzu was invited to speak at the session about the anti-Zionist bias that has been pervasive in the university for far too long. This session is important development and a necessary step in improving the situation at Ben-Gurion University.

Calling the Nakba What It Is: Nonsense
As in previous years, Im Tirtzu activists continued in full force to protest against the lies of the "Nakba." Activists organized demonstrations at the Nakba events held at Haifa University and Tel-Aviv University, where they distributed IMTI's "Nakba Nonsense" booklet and audiobook on USB flash drives.
This year, Haifa University did not permit activists to distribute Israeli flags on Yom Haatzmaut or wave Israeli flags at the demonstration against the Nakba, claiming that it was provocative. Im Tirtzu views this as a very serious incident and is working hard to ensure that such an event never again occurs at Haifa University, nor at any other university in Israel.
Today IMTI's branch coordinator was interviewed for over 10 minutes on Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), Israel's most popular radio station, and informed the listeners of the state of affairs at Haifa University. Videos with English subtitles from the event along with a brief summary of what transpired will soon be sent out.

22Now it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol his general said to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do. | כבוַיְהִי בָּעֵת הַהִוא וַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִימֶלֶךְ וּפִיכֹל שַׂר צְבָאוֹ אֶל אַבְרָהָם לֵאמֹר אֱלֹהִים עִמְּךָ בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה עֹשֶׂה:
23And now, swear to me here by God, that you will not lie to me or to my son or to my grandson; according to the kindness that I have done with you, you shall do with me, and with the land wherein you have sojourned." | כגוְעַתָּה הִשָּׁבְעָה לִּי בֵאלֹהִים הֵנָּה אִם תִּשְׁקֹר לִי וּלְנִינִי וּלְנֶכְדִּי כַּחֶסֶד אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי עִמְּךָ תַּעֲשֶׂה עִמָּדִי וְעִם הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר גַּרְתָּה בָּהּ:
24And Abraham said, "I will swear." |
25And Abraham contended with Abimelech about the well of water that the servants of Abimelech had forcibly seized.
26And Abimelech said, "I do not know who did this thing, neither did you tell me, nor did I hear [of it] until today. " | כווַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִימֶלֶךְ לֹא יָדַעְתִּי מִי עָשָׂה אֶת הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וְגַם אַתָּה לֹא הִגַּדְתָּ לִּי וְגַם אָנֹכִי לֹא שָׁמַעְתִּי בִּלְתִּי הַיּוֹם:
27And Abraham took flocks and cattle, and gave them to Abimelech, and they both formed a covenant. |
28And Abraham placed seven ewe lambs by themselves. |
29And Abimelech said to Abraham, "What are these seven ewe lambs, which you have placed by themselves?"
30And he said, "For these seven ewe lambs you shall take from my hand, in order that it be to me for a witness that I dug this well."
31Therefore, he named that place Beer sheba, for there they both swore. |
32And they formed a covenant in Beer-sheba, and Abimelech and Phicol his general arose, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.
33And he planted an eishel in Beer-Sheba, and he called there in the name of the Lord, the God of the world.
34And Abraham dwelt in the land of the Philistines for many days. |
22-34 The Alliance with Abimelech:
in this Biblical narrative, Abimelech came to seal a Covenant with him (Rashbam) . Abimelech stressed that he sought this treat of friendship not because of Abraham's wealth or power, but because G-d is with you in all that you do (Sforno)
25: Then Abraham Disputed: Although the peace-loving Abraham agreed to enter into the alliance, he seized the opportunity to state a grievance regarding a disputed well, for as the Midrash notes: "Reproof leads to peace" Sforno comments that Abraham rebuked Abimelech for tolerating flagrant violence in his country.
30: Because you are to take. Abraham wanted Abimelech to accept the gift as a token of his acknowledgement of Abraham's right to the well.
34: The verse does not read וישב אברהם, and Abraham settled, which would imply permanent residence. Rather it uses the term ויגר, alien. For as Rashi points out in his commentary to 15:13, Abraham's years in the land of Philistines after the birth of Isaac were reckoned as part of the four hundred years during which his descendants were to be aliens in a land not their own.
