The Cat's out of the Bag
by Nadia Matar

I was happy to read the reports in the media on Wednesday, May 26,
2010, that dozens of lecturers from the Hebrew University set out with
hundreds of their students on a march to the "Sheikh Jarah" (Shimon
Hatzaddik) neighborhood in Jerusalem "to demonstrate against the entry
of Jewish settlers to the neighborhood and the removal of Arab
families from their homes."

The photographs accompanying the reports show the demonstrators with
signs such as: "Students and Lecturers against Settlements," "Thou
Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's House," and the like.

According to the report on Ynet, during the course of the procession
the students and the lecturers voiced calls such as "We will not sit
in classrooms when, outside, rights are being trampled" and "Civil
rights will not be taught with racism in Sheikh Jarah." They also bore
banners stating, among others (in a slogan that rhymes in Hebrew),
"There Is No Sanctity in an Occupied City."

The report quotes various lecturers who explain why they came to demonstrate:

Dr. David Tsafti, a lecturer in genetics: "I don't agree to the
expulsion of families from their homes. They say that the houses
belong to Jews, and maybe that is correct, but it certainly isn't
right [...] people have lost the ability to see Arabs as human
beings."

[Interestingly, five years ago Dr David Tsafti was not seen
demonstarting against the expulsion of our brothers from Gush
Katif...but let's go on to the next lecturer]

Ruti Bettler, a professor of education, said that she has been active
in this struggle [against Jews settling in Jerusalem's neighborhood of
Sheikh Jarrah] for a long time. "The attempt to expel these families
from their homes is an injustice in the human and moral plane." [She
too somehow, who is active on behalf of Arab squatters in homes they
grabbed and stole from the original Jewish owners, did not decry the
expulsion of Jews from their real homes.]

Let's go on to the next leftist professor quoted in the article:

Professor Tamar Rappaport said that no less than 10 lecturers in
education came to the demonstration. "Word of the demonstration went
though the social networks and [e-]mails, and reached people. In the
final analysis, lecturers, too, are people, and in this land it's
impossible not to be political." She made clear that the lecturers did
not come to the demonstration in the name of the university, and
rather were speaking for themselves, but she emphasized: "I think that
the struggle of Sheikh Jarah is closely connected with academy."

The professor of anthropology Yoram Bilu told that during all his
years in academe, he did not encounter such a broad and diverse
response by lecturers and students for such cooperation."

You'll be surprised to hear this, but I am very glad that such a
demonstration was held by the left. For years we have been trying to
persuade teachers, educators, and rabbis in our national camp that it
is inconceivable that they and their students would not be involved,
even during study hours, in the struggle for Eretz Israel.

During the Oslo period I attempted to persuade teachers to join the
demonstrations against the Oslo accords, together with their students,
during study times, as well. How is it possible to continue to study
when the house is on fire, we told them? And likewise during the
period of the expulsion from Gush Katif and northern Samaria, and
likewise right now: when the Arabs, who are financed by international
bodies, are stealing and grabbing thousands of dunams of state lands,
tens of thousands of yeshivah students in the state-religious or
hardal (semi-ultra-Orthodox) religious educational institutions
continue with routine life as usual, continue to study in
air-conditioned study halls - as if there were no physical war, on the
ground, for the land. Don't misunderstand me. I am not calling to stop
Torah study, or any other study, but I am calling to combine study
with the actual struggle on the ground, as I will explain in detail
below with practical examples.

Once I also tried to persuade Bnei Akiva counselors to organize
setting up new me'ahazim (outpost settlements), or to distribute
informational material against the Oslo accords and for Eretz Israel
as a whole. In all these instances described above we were confronted
by the same puzzling response: "It is forbidden for us and our members
to participate in "political" activity."

Now,after dozens of Hebrew University lecturers, who publicly
proclaimed their views, unabashedly participated in a demonstration by
the left, I want to hope that in our camp, as well, educators, rabbis,
teachers, lecturers, and their students will begin to arise and go out
to defend Eretz Israel, on the ground.

Ideas for action:

1) Each yeshivah, each school, each ulpanah (girls' seminary) will
adopt hilltops in Judea and Samaria, where they will organize rosters
of a permanent Jewish presence to defend the lands that will remain in
Jewish hands. They will plant trees, and also erect buildings, even if
only simple ones, where they will engage in their studies.

2) Each yeshivah, each school, each ulpanah, from the Gush Dan area,
too, will adopt a me'ahaz (outpost) in Judea and Samaria. The students
and teachers will aid that me'ahaz, by a duty roster, several times a
week, aiding in agriculture, construction, and maintaining a Jewish
presence. On Shabbatot, as well, come to the place and make a
connection.

3) In the event, Heaven forbid, of the destruction of structures,
studies will not be held on that day, and all the teachers and
students from the schools, the yeshivot, and the ulpanot, and the
youth movement members from the area, will come to aid in restoring
the ruins and rebuilding everything anew.

These, of course, are just examples of the activity that, in my humble
opinion, should be adopted by all the teachers and students in the
national educational institutions. The message is clear. As was said
in the demonstration by the leftists: "We will not sit in classrooms
when, outside, rights are being trampled." We are waiting for our
educators to tell their students: "We will not sit in classrooms and
study halls when, outside, the rights of Eretz Israel and the rights
of the Jews are being trampled. We will continue our studies - but
they will be combined with action on behalf of Eretz Israel."

Why it is so urgent to meet with David Ha'Ivri Liaison to the Shomron Community Council this week

bs"d

Anachnu Maaminim Bnei Maaminim..... Much material of this email was taken from the Sefer "Halacha Berurah" whose author is Rav Yisachar Dov Rumpler a Belze Chasid later greatly influenced by the Lubavitch Rebe documenting the events of the time in the months preceding the Hitnatkut from a Chareidi perspective.

To: Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel and Rabbi Leibish Becker, amv"sh

This past week we have placed numerous phone calls to the Agudah Office asking you to please meet with us and with David Ha'Ivri liason of the Shomron Community Council.  We were disappointed to be told that Agudah was unable to fit us, activists for Eretz Yisroel  "into the schedule" this week.  We were however given a meeting date on Friday June 11th.  Unfortunately, by that time David Ha'Ivri is back in Israel.

We appreciate Agudah's albeit reluctant willingness to meet with us.

(Many of our names can be found in the CC list after media list). Many names you will recognize, because we are dedicated members of the Jewish community volunteering our time night and day, taking the time once again out of our busy schedules to meet with Agudah at Agudah's earliest convenience because we understand the urgency of this matter.  This is Ait Tzara for the Jewish people and  for which according to the Shulchan Aruch one is even permitted to be Mechalel Shabbos and not wait till after Shabbos in order not to come to the situation that might weaken Jewish claim to the Land of Israel. (Shulchan Orech Siman Shin Chaf Tes Seif Vav)

Please reconsider a meeting with David Ha'Ivri this week because the series of events in the Shomron is scary reminding us of the destruction of Gush Katif and Amona.  There are orders in place for the destruction of Beit Yehonaton, destruction of Od Yosef Chai in Yitzhar, a Beth Medrash and shul, and the destruction of 46 structures chas vechalil which from painful past experiences of such nature had devastating effects on families and is Gezeila Pshuto Kemashmao and creates a situation of Pikuach Nefesh to millions.

Where is the Geshrai?  (Shulchan Aruch taf kuf ayin vav seif aleph)

UMordechai Yada es Kol Asher Naaseh...Vayetzi Besoch Hair Vayizak Zeaka Gedola Umara..

Ki Im Hachareish Tacharishi LaEish Hazos Revach Vehatzala Yaamod Layehudim... Umi Yodea Im LaEish Hazos Higaat Lamalchut?

As Queen Esther tells Achashveirosh,  "For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain and to be exterminated.  Had we been sold as slaves and maidservants, I would have kept quiet for the adversary is not worthy of the king's damage." (translation Stone Chumash)

The ideological father of the Palestinian Authority is

Grand Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini

www.palestinefacts.org/pf_mandate_grand_mufti.php the Mufti of Jerusalem, partner to Hitler, Yemach Shemo.

Iran under the despot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad another admirer of Hitler Yemach Shemo and Holocaust denier, is very close to producing nuclear weapons and US intelligence is unable to determine exactly when.  However all now agree that the time is  too close for comfort. This was the jolting message from John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the UN  and Michael Steele Republican National Committee Chairman. John Bolton spoke at the Ateret Cohanim Dinner and Michael Steele at Central Park concert  this past Sunday.  This Iranian despot would not  hesitate to use his nuclear muscle on Israel given the chance.   The message of these Righteous Gentiles to us was that what is good for Israel is good for America!  Destruction of the settlements in the heart of Israel  is to the detriment of Israel! Blessings to the world flow through the Jewish people as is written in the Torah and the Prophets.

Surely Hashem is waiting to fulfill His promise to protect His Nation Israel.  How can we  give away and shame our Bechora, our inheritance as did Aisav lehavdil  for a pot of lentils (educational subsidies and empty promises of peace to satiate our desire for peace)

We all know what happened to Sederot after the communities of Gush Katif were destroyed.  Let's think about Ben Gurion airport, Bnei Brak, Kiryat Sefer, Beitar Illit ....  Perek Peh Gimmel in Tehillim says it all.

It is still not too late to meet with David Ha'Ivri since he is scheduled to be here this whole week.  He deserves our admiration and support for representing a community that is on the front lines in the Shomron, a temporary buffer zone for us here in Brooklyn and throughout the Diaspora. Let us in the Diaspora learn from the sharp rebuke of Moshe Rabbeinu to Shevet Reuvein, Gad and Chatzi Shevet Menasheh  "Acheichem Yatzu LaMilchama VeAtem Teishvu Po?" , Your brothers go to War and you sit here?

Rabbanim of Eretz Yisroel have been  crying out to Rabbanim and Jewish Organizations in Israel and the Diaspora to help raise our voices and to do whatever we possibly can to wake up the Jewish people and lobby Washington to stop pressuring Israel. (Please see attachment of letter of Chief Rabbi Moshe Shlomo Amar to the Major Jewish Organizations in the Diaspora and the letter written by the Rabbinical Congress of Peace prior to the Expulsion from Gush Katif.  )  It is also clear that initially many Gedoilei Hatorah and Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah were against the "Hitnatkut". (see attachments and Hamodia article of 12 Cheshvan 5745 (2005) )

On 24 Teves 5745 (2005)Hamodia reported that 290 million Shekalim was allocated to the Yeshivoth in return for UTJ joining the Coalition thereby leaving the 8,000 Jews of Gush Katif on their own.  Please review the attachments of an anguished outcry of Chareidim who attempted to prevent the tragic expulsion from Gush Katif.

In 2007 Rav Perlow went especially to Eretz Yisroel asking a Sheila regarding division of Yerushalyim and Rav Eliashiv clearly gave a Psak against dividing Jerusalem and we must proclaim it Bechol Hatokef (Agudah Convention 2007, Motzei Shabbos address by Rav Perlow). At the time activists for Eretz Yisroel Hashleim were disappointed that no message was stated against a Palestinian State.  However, that would have been politically incorrect and in opposition to American Foreign Policy of the times which promoted a Palestinian Statehood but still supported a United Jerusalem.

Odelia Jacobs has documentation that Rabbi Morgenstern in Eretz Yisroel was told the same by Rav Eliashiv regarding our obligation to become activists in this matter. . Now that there is a construction freeze also affecting Yerushalyim, where is the outcry in Agudah against current events in Ramat Shlomo and construction freeze in Yerushalyim.

Thank you for your time and consideration and for reviewing the attachments.

HaGaon HaRav Ben Zion Grossman of Migdal Haamek  in an interview with Eretz Yisroel Shelanu said:

The brothers of Yosef Hatzadik said to one another (Breishith 42:21) "Indeed we are guilty concerning our brother, inasmuch as we saw his heartfelt anguish as he pleaded with us and we paid not heed.  That is why this anguish has come upon us" When the State of Israel destroyed tens of settlements, abandoned thousands of Jews, and gave their lands to murderers who set fire to their Shuls, and the Chareidi community sat and was quiet, many said in their hearts:  this won't happen to us.  and behold, it happened, and today within Yerushalyim they are not building, and in Chareidi settlements they are demolishing homes"

Court rejects Beit Yehonatan appeal
By JPOST.COM STAFF 25/05/2010

Jerusalem court orders eviction, demolition to begin immediately.

The Jerusalem District Court rejected the latest appeal against the slated
sealing of Beit Yehonatan, a Jewish seven-story building constructed without
a permit in the mostly Arab southeast Silwan neighborhood, Israel Radio
reported on Tuesday.

Judge Nava Ben-Or ruled against the residents' appeal to delay the sealing
order, stipulating that it should be carried out immediately.

The court order, which calls for Beit Yehonatan's residents to be evicted
and the building to be sealed, has been delayed for over two years, due to
internal squabbling within the municipality regarding the larger issues of
building codes and their enforcement in east Jerusalem.

The building is named for Jonathan Pollard and was built in 2004 with funds
from the Ateret Cohanim organization.

 My comments:

In this context let us analyze what is happening in Judea and Samaria. Be sure to check out these links

Freedom of expression?  ( read about Aryeh Arbus  a righteous soldier that dared to publicly object to expelling Jews from their homes is imprisoned)

Freedom to bear arms and Freedom of Self Defense? (Read what Mordechai Sones and Emmanuel Winston have written about confiscation of weapons in the Shomron )

Freedom to own property? (Destruction of 22 communities of Gush Katif and Northern Shomron 2005 putting the lives of the residents of Sderot, Ashkelon and Southern Israel in danger, Pending destruction Chas Vechalila of 46 structures in Shavei Shomron and Od Yosef Chai shul in Yitzhar, making way for the establishment of a Palestinian State Chas Veshalom putting the  lives of millions of Israeli's in places like Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak, and Ben Gurion Airport in danger.  What is bad for Israel is certainly terribly bad for America as well!)

Freedom of Religion? (Biblical References by the Prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu are considered distasteful and an obstacle to "Peace")

Surely these intolerable acts on the part of the Israeli govt as a result of International foreign pressure would justify a militia in Judea and Samaria as defined by the 2nd amendment of our Bill of Rights!  (Thank you Israel Kaplan ob'm for this following reference in response to an antisemitic billboard)

Bill of Rights:

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed

My Personal Account of Ateret Cohanim Dinner also Kitty Werthmann sobering History lesson - Gradualism - Nazism It took 5 years to realize full dictatorship in Austria. State eroded freedoms

bs"d

Dear Friends and Family, amv"sh

I just came back from the Ateret Cohanim Dinner.  Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton spoke very sobering words. He said that we are running out of options in Iran.  Sanctions might have worked at one point but that time is over.  Even if they come up with a 4th set of sanctions in the UN (and they very likely will) it won't make much of a difference at this point just like the other 3 votes of sanctions didn't accomplish much.  Bolton's preferred method of dealing with this crisis would be a regime change in Iran.  However, he said that this possibility had been most favorable at the time of the elections when the population clearly showed their discontent with the regime.  At this point however, it's not too likely and the opposition is weaker and this option needs time for nurturing which we don't have.

He said that it is highly unlikely that the Obama administration will choose a military option.  The Obama administration is resigned to a Nuclear Iran. Bolton had thought that Bush perhaps would consider a military option since Bush had said that a nuclear Iran is unacceptable and Bolton assumed that Bush meant what he said.  Oh well.   All these years of negotiations with Iran lying to the Commission that oversees them  has bought Iran time to develop it's nuclear capability to the point it is today which is very close of being a nuclear power.  Our intelligence in Iran in less then perfect so we aren't positive about how close to this point in time we are. A month, a year....  But we can not wait till we are certain since then it might be too late.  He said that if Iran becomes nuclear then all the other Arab countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabi, Jordan etc will follow suit.  He mentioned that North Korea  collaborates with Iran on nuclear arms development and has no problems with selling their knowledge and technology to terrorist regimes.  The nuclear plant in Syria which was attacked by Israel on the Euphrates River was built with the help of North Korea and very likely with funding from Iran.

That leaves Israel to once again deal with this threat.  He said that Israel has legitimate reasons based on self defense to execute the military option.  This he feels would also  benefit  National Security of the US as well as the National Security of the surrounding Arab countries who privately would welcome an Israeli strike but not publicly.  They too do not want a nuclear Iran.  If Israel would choose this route, they would need to know that they have the support of America and  will be able to replenish their weaponry, and aircraft in case they are subsequently attacked by Hizbollah.  He suggested that Israel will not reveal when and if they will attack.  However, he recommended that we bring this up with our Congressman now and inform our communities now so that in the event that Israel does attack there would be  understanding and acceptance of why this was necessary and also because Israel would need support as well as assurances for replenishing their military stock.

All I could think of while listening to this was Yisroel BTach BaHashem, Ezram Umaginum Hu. Israel Trusts in G-d, He is their Helper and their Protector.

The Dinner was a huge success. When I came it was hard to find a parking spot in Terrace on the Park  lot. The place was full with good food, good company and of course  scrumptious mouthwatering yummy deserts.  The videos and music of Yerushalyim made me teary eyed and the emotion and love of the Land was so obvious on the faces of all the honorees.  Each honoree felt so grateful that they had the merit to be part of this wonderful organization and be part of building up Yerushalayim .  Yasher Koach to all those involved in putting this event together

Now let's put aside current events and listen to the wisdom of Kitty Werthmann for a  sobering history lesson....

Truly is the Greatest Country in the World. Don't Let Freedom Slip Away
By: Kitty Werthmann

What I am about to tell you is something most probably never heard or will ever read in history books.

I believe that I am an eyewitness to history.  I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history.  We elected him by a landslide - 98% of the vote.  I've never read that in any American publications.  Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took Austria by force.

In 1938, Austria was in deep Depression.  Nearly one-third of our workforce was unemployed.  We had 25% inflation and 25% bank loan interest rates.

Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young people were going from house to house begging for food.  Not that they didn't want to work; there simply weren't any jobs.  My mother was a Christian woman and believed in helping people in need.  Every day we cooked a big kettle of soup and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people - about 30 daily.

The Communist Party and the National Socialist Party were fighting each other.  Blocks and blocks of cities like Vienna, Linz, and Graz were destroyed.  The people became desperate and petitioned the government to let them decide what kind of government they wanted.

We looked to our neighbor on the north, Germany, where Hitler had been in power since 1933.  We had been told that they didn't have unemployment or crime, and they had a high standard of living.  Nothing was ever said about persecution of any group -- Jewish or otherwise.  We were led to believe that everyone was happy.  We wanted the same way of life in Austria . We were promised that a vote for Hitler would mean the end of unemployment and help for the family.  Hitler also said that businesses would be assisted, and farmers would get their farms back.  Ninety-eight percent of the population voted to annex Austria to Germany and have Hitler for our ruler.

We were overjoyed, and for three days we danced in the streets and had candlelight parades.  The new government opened up big field kitchens and everyone was fed.

After the election, German officials were appointed, and like a miracle, we suddenly had law and order.  Three or four weeks later, everyone was employed.  The government made sure that a lot of work was created through the Public Work Service.

Hitler decided we should have equal rights for women.  Before this, it was a custom that married Austrian women did not work outside the home.  An able-bodied husband would be looked down on if he couldn't support his family.  Many women in the teaching profession were elated that they could retain the jobs they previously had been required to give up for marriage.

Hitler Targets Education - Eliminates Religious Instruction for Children:

Our education was nationalized.  I attended a very good public school.  The population was predominantly Catholic, so we had religion in our schools. The day we elected Hitler (March 13, 1938), I walked into my schoolroom to find the crucifix replaced by Hitler's picture hanging next to a Nazi flag. Our teacher, a very devout woman, stood up and told the class we wouldn't pray or have religion anymore.  Instead, we sang "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles," and had physical education.

Sunday became National Youth Day with compulsory attendance. Parents were not pleased about the sudden change in curriculum.  They were told that if they did not send us, they would receive a stiff letter of warning the first time.  The second time they would be fined the equivalent of $300, and the third time they would be subject to jail.  The first two hours consisted of political indoctrination.  The rest of the day we had sports.  As time went along, we loved it.  Oh, we had so much fun and got our sports equipment free.  We would go home and gleefully tell our parents about the wonderful time we had.

My mother was very unhappy.  When the next term started, she took me out of public school and put me in a convent.  I told her she couldn't do that and she told me that someday when I grew up, I would be grateful.  There was a very good curriculum, but hardly any fun - no sports, and no political indoctrination..  I hated it at first but felt I could tolerate it.  Every once in a while, on holidays, I went home. I would go back to my old friends and ask what was going on and what they were doing.  Their loose lifestyle was very alarming to me.  They lived without religion.  By that time unwed mothers were glorified for having a baby for Hitler.  It seemed strange to me that our society changed so suddenly.  As time went along, I realized what a great deed my mother did so that I wasn't exposed to that kind of humanistic philosophy.

Equal Rights Hits Home:

In 1939, the war started and a food bank was established.  All food was rationed and could only be purchased using food stamps.  At the same time, a full-employment law was passed which meant if you didn't work, you didn't get a ration card, and if you didn't have a card, you starved to death. Women who stayed home to raise their families didn't have any marketable skills and often had to take jobs more suited for men.

Soon after this, the draft was implemented.  It was compulsory for young people, male and female, to give one year to the labor corps.  During the day, the girls worked on the farms, and at night they returned to their barracks for military training just like the boys.  They were trained to be anti-aircraft gunners and participated in the signal corps.  After the labor corps, they were not discharged but were used in the front lines.  When I go back to Austria to visit my family and friends, most of these women are emotional cripples because they just were not equipped to handle the horrors of combat.  Three months before I turned 18, I was severely injured in an air raid attack.  I nearly had a leg amputated, so I was spared having to go into the labor corps and into military service.

Hitler Restructured the Family Through Daycare:

When the mothers had to go out into the work force, the government immediately established child care centers.  You could take your children ages 4 weeks to school age and leave them there around-the-clock, 7 days a week, under the total care of the government.  The state raised a whole generation of children.  There were no motherly women to take care of the children, just people highly trained in child psychology.  By this time, no one talked about equal rights.  We knew we had been had.

Health Care and Small Business Suffer Under Government Controls:

Before Hitler, we had very good medical care.  Many American doctors trained at the University of Vienna .  After Hitler, health care was socialized, free for everyone.  Doctors were salaried by the government.  The problem was, since it was free, the people were going to the doctors for everything. When the good doctor arrived at his office at 8 a.m., 40 people were already waiting and, at the same time, the hospitals were full.  If you needed elective surgery, you had to wait a year or two for your turn.  There was no money for research as it was poured into socialized medicine.  Research at the medical schools literally stopped, so the best doctors left Austria and emigrated to other countries.

As for healthcare, our tax rates went up to 80% of our income.  Newlyweds immediately received a $1,000 loan from the government to establish a household.  We had big programs for families.  All day care and education were free.  High schools were taken over by the government and college tuition was subsidized.  Everyone was entitled to free handouts, such as food stamps, clothing, and housing.

We had another agency designed to monitor business. My brother-in-law owned a restaurant that had square tables.  Government officials told him he had to replace them with round tables because people might bump themselves on the corners.  Then they said he had to have additional bathroom facilities. It was just a small dairy business with a snack bar.  He couldn't meet all the demands.  Soon, he went out of business.  If the government owned the large businesses and not many small ones existed, it could be in control.

We had consumer protection.  We were told how to shop and what to buy.  Free enterprise was essentially abolished.  We had a planning agency specially designed for farmers.  The agents would go to the farms, count the live-stock, then tell the farmers what to produce, and how to produce it.

"Mercy Killing" Redefined:

In 1944, I was a student teacher in a small village in the Alps .  The villagers were surrounded by mountain passes which, in the winter, were closed off with snow, causing people to be isolated.  So people intermarried and offspring were sometimes retarded.  When I arrived, I was told there were 15 mentally retarded adults, but they were all useful and did good manual work.  I knew one, named Vincent, very well.  He was a janitor of the school.  One day I looked out the window and saw Vincent and others getting into a van.  I asked my superior where they were going.  She said to an institution where the State Health Department would teach them a trade, and to read and write.  The families were required to sign papers with a little clause that they could not visit for 6 months.  They were told visits would interfere with the program and might cause homesickness.

As time passed, letters started to dribble back saying these people died a natural, merciful death.  The villagers were not fooled.  We suspected what was happening.  Those people left in excellent physical health and all died within 6 months.  We called this euthanasia.

The Final Steps - Gun Laws:

Next came gun registration.. People were getting injured by guns.  Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms.  Not long after-wards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns.  The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.

No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the government was taken away.  We knew many people who were arrested, not only Jews, but also priests and ministers who spoke up.

Totalitarianism didn't come quickly, it took 5 years from 1938 until 1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria . Had it happened overnight, my countrymen would have fought to the last breath.  Instead, we had creeping gradualism.  Now, our only weapons were broom handles.  The whole idea sounds almost unbelievable that the state, little by little eroded our freedom.

After World War II, Russian troops occupied Austria .  Women were raped, preteen to elderly.  The press never wrote about this either.  When the Soviets left in 1955, they took everything that they could, dismantling whole factories in the process.  They sawed down whole orchards of fruit, and what they couldn't destroy, they burned.  We called it The Burned Earth. Most of the population barricaded themselves in their houses.  Women hid in their cellars for 6 weeks as the troops mobilized.  Those who couldn't, paid the price.  There is a monument in Vienna today, dedicated to those women who were massacred by the Russians.  This is an eye witness account.

"It's true..those of us who sailed past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom and opportunity.

Regarding destruction of Chareidi homes: Forbidden to sit on one's Laurel's and Fold our Arms HaRav Ben Zion Grossman of Migdal Haamek

bs"d

Yom Chevron 29 Iyar 5770

(Translation)  Interview Eretz Yisroel Shelanu

HaGaon HaRav Ben Zion Grossman of Migdal Haamek:
Soul Searching our Silence of  Gush Katif -

It is Forbidden to Sit Passively and Fold our Arms

*************************************

Honorable HaRav Grosman shlita,  Netanyahu is developing proximity talks with Arabs for the establishment of a Palestinian State and has frozen all building in Yerushalayim and the religious Chareidi parties are busy with themselves,

The Lubavitcher Rebbe warned immediately after the Six Day War, 43 or so years ago, that any concession will lead to additional concessions.  He cried strongly against religious parties supporting a government that was willing to cede parts of our Holy Land and he warned hundreds of times that in the end they will give away Yerushalayim, G-d forbid.  I am amazed how religious Jews can be a partner to this terrible situation as never before.

"Who believed two years ago that they would freeze construction in Ramat Shlomo or destroy houses in Modiin Ilit, and they would freeze all construction in Beitar Ilit?  The day before the elections, in an interview with Eretz Yisroel Shelanu, I warned of terrible consequences.  Unfortunately, it all actualized, because the words of the Tzadik Hador like the Lubavitcher Rebbe are not to be taken back.  What is left to do is for all the Rabbanim and ASkanim to stand up and not allow Chas Veshalom any progress in the continuation of negotiations that will bring the spilling of blood to millions of Jews in Eretz Hakodesh"

The awful destruction of the homes in Yishuv Modiin by inspectors of the Civilian Administration reminded many of the Churban of Gush Katif.  Is there a connection?

"
The Torah speaks of Yosef Hatzadik's brothers that they said 'Indeed we are guilty concerning our brother, inasmuch as we saw his heartfelt anguish as he pleaded with us and we paid not heed.  That is why this anguish has come upon us'.  It is no secret that at the time the State destroyed tens of Yishuvim, and figuratively abandoned thousands of Jews from the face of this earth, and gave their lands to murderers who set fire to their shuls and Batei Medrashoth, the majority of the Chareidi community sat and was silent including the Rabbanim.  Many said to themselves 'this won't happen to us' and behold this happened, and today  we see that in Yerushalayim they are not building, and in Chareidi communities they are destroying houses with fierce anger.

"It is clear that we need penetrating soul searching and know that the words of the Lubavitch Rebbe on the subject of Eretz Yisroel are actual words of prophesy, and not pointless, and everyone must act according to the Holy Torah, to do whatever is in his power with money or by deed, to stop the continuation of the political process and the practice of giving additional territory to Arabs.

"In Hilchos Taaniyot Perek  Aleph Halacha Gimmel, the Rambam writes:' But if they do not scream or make noise, rather they will say this matter is a usual occurrence that this tragedy  happened to occur, this is cruelty and causes them to adhere to their evil ways and bring additional anguish upon themselves'.  Therefore, everyone must learn from this, of what happened in Gush Katif, to rectify ones deeds and know exactly why this Tzara has coming upon us.

"From here I would like to praise HaGaon Rabbi Shalom Volpe, the one that sits at the head of Eretz Yisroel Shelanu, who according to the instructions of the Rebbe literally devotes his soul to this matter of saving Eretz Yisroel.  From him we should learn and act and each and every person is obligated according to Din Torah, to do whatever he can regarding this matter."

With what should we strengthen ourselves?

First of all strengthen ourselves with Torah, Mitzvoth and good deeds.  These are the protection of evil tidings with the anticipation of the coming of Moshiach speedily in our day.   With this having been said, it is our obligation, as Jews that have merited living in Eretz Yisroel HaKadosh, to do everything in ones power for Eretz Yisroel and not to rest on one's laurels and say "Peace be unto me".  Eventually, this awful danger will reach us all, and no one is excused monetarily or in deed in this matter of saving Eretz Yisroel and helping the settlements in every which way.  These words are directed to those in the Diaspora as well.  There is an obligation upon each individual.  Therefore I call upon you to assist all activities of "Hamateh LeHatzalas Haam VeHaaretz' and 'Eretz Yisroel Shelanu'.  I want to wish all of us that we merit receiving the Torah with inner joy from happiness and goodness of our hearts.
