In listening to a Video of Harav Alon Anava on last year's Asara B'Tevet he was saying that Asara BeTevet is a very auspicious time and different than other fasts.  Other fasts are for tragic events that happened in the past.  Asara B'Tevet is a fast to prevent a bad decree.

Why do we commemorate Asara B'Tevet?

Thirty months later—on 9 Tammuz 3338—the city walls were breached, and on 9 Av of that year the Holy Temple was destroyed. The Jewish people were exiled to Babylonia for 70 years.

Rabbi Anava explained that the Heavenly court gathered together on Asara B'Tevet to  give us an opportunity to do Teshuva  and if we would have done Teshuva, the siege would have been removed. The siege lasted for almost 3 years.  The Jews had two more chances on Asara B'Tevet to annul the decree.  Unfortunately, the Yiden did not do Teshuva and the Temple was destroyed on Tisha B'Av 30 months later. .

That is why if Asara B'Tevet would fall on Shabbat we would be required to fast since we can annul a bad decree.  (In fact it never falls on Shabbat).  

Recent manic depressive,  tragic and  miraculous events, have brought amazing Achdut, Unity among the Jewish people.  A tragedy happened on Rosh Chodesh Chanukah when a fire raged in the Azan home in Flatbush and a mother and 3 children perished and the father and 2 of the children are in serious and critical condition. https://nypost.com/2017/12/20/family-killed-in-brooklyn-house-fire-laid-to-rest-in-israel/.  The funeral took place in Israel. 

Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef were among the people who attended the funeral.
"When the Temple existed the public would bring sacrifices, but the public paid for these sacrifices and some were made for their people," said Deri, according to Ynetnews. "For our sins, when there is no Temple, God takes pure souls as a public sacrifice. … There are no words that can console the family. God chose you to make a public sacrifice. We don't understand the ways of the Almighty."

This tragedy together with the tragedy of the Sassoon Family on Rosh Chodesh Nissan in March 2015,  https://nypost.com/2016/12/04/mom-who-lost-7-children-in-fire-wants-to-build-family-center-in-their-memory/ seems to highlight the urgency of the Nation of Israel to rebuild the Holy Temple in our day!  We have had enough of human sacrifices.  

As Minister Deri pointed out, Rosh Chodesh is a time when public sacrifices were brought at the Holy Temple to atone for the sins of the people.

On the positive side, it is as if Hashem is reminding us that He loves us.  Surely, greater tragedy would have occurred to the general population had G-d not accepted these pure Holy souls, Kedoshim to atone for us all. 

In addition, the Jewish people almost simultaneously celebrated the miraculous release of Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin due to President Trump's order which had followed a declaration by President Trump recognizing Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel!

We all feel that Moshiach is at our doorstep.

How do we prepare a candle for Moshiach? In order for there to be light, one must first prepare a candle.  How then do we prepare a candle for Moshiach today in our Time?

We are all familiar with the Lubavitch most popular Song "We Want Moshiach Now!"

This yearning is a prerequisite for Moshiach as is written in Hoshea.  Yearning for Moshiach goes hand in hand with Yearning for the restoration of Malchus Shamayim - the World's recognition of Hashem's Kingdom,   for the return of Malchus Beis Dovid - the Davidic Kindom and the yearning for the return of the Temple Service.

This indeed is consistent with the Prophesy in Hoshea as per Rabbi Sorotzkin's well publicized Stop Talking in Shul Drasha following the Har Nof Massacre.

This yearning is necessary and in the Zchus of Am Yisroel being worthy due to their yearning for  these 3 things as well as yearning to bring righteous judges as in days of old may we be worthy of the Revelation of Moshiach where the entire World will recognize His G-dly Revelation.

So the question remains how can we prepare the candle for Moshiach's arrival? There are some who argue that there is nothing we can do but that Hashem must first bring Moshiach and He will prepare the candle.  In fact isn't this consistent with what the Medrash says on the Pasuk in Tehillim 132:17

שָׁ֚ם | אַצְמִ֣יחַ קֶ֣רֶן לְדָוִ֑ד עָרַ֥כְתִּי נֵ֜֗ר לִמְשִׁיחִֽי:יז 

17There I shall cause David's horn to sprout; I have set up a lamp for My anointed.

Is it all up to Hashem or do we also play a part?

The Medrash explains that Hashem told Moshe that in Olam HaZeh we need the light of the Beit HaMikdash and we light candles but in Olam Haba G-d will bring the candle which is Moshiach which is compared to a candle that lights up the world. 

In this world, Aharon the Cohen actually had to light the lamps, the candles.  Nowadays, as we are still in Olam Hazeh, this world, it seems to me we too must do our part.  Perhaps by us preparing the candle for Moshiach down on this earth, G-d will then prepare the candle of Moshiach in the spiritual spheres. 

Rabbi Alon Anava emphasized doing a Cheshbon Nefesh, self examination, and remove any root of baseless hatred from our hearts.

We can't hate another person.  We are in exile because of Sinat Chinam, baseless hatred.  Not enough Ahavat Yisroel, love of a fellow Jew.   Each Jew must do Cheshbon Nefesh, introspection.  Today we have to work on not to hate others.  Who is rich? The one who is happy in the portion of a friend and not to be jealous of a fellow. One type of baseless hatred, Sinat Chinam, is because someone actually wronged me.  We need  to recognize that the one who has wronged us is just a Shaliach, merely G-d's messenger.  

Another kind of Sinat Chinam is when we hate another person because they are more successful or better off than ourselves.  We are jealous, sometimes angry just because someone has it better.  This is a category of Sinat Chinam.  We have to be happy for our fellow Jew.  I have to be introspective to see if I have some Sinat Chinam in my heart or if I am happy for him and for his success.  

Even the students of Rabbi Akiva had this trait.  We all are guilty to some degree.  That is why we fast...to do Cheshbon Nefesh.  take responsibility, to be honest and true to ourselves, Do we really deserve to get the Beit Hamikdash?

Let us ask ourselves. Am I holding Sinat Chinam...  Do I have an Ayin Tzara, a stingy eye? .... When we are jealous we feel that we are better than the other person and don't respect Hashem's choices. There is a term in Yiddish called Lefargen. It means that I am happy for my friend's good fortune. To really be happy and not carry the anger.  Jealousy is Kefira beHaKadosh Baruch Hu, to deny G-d and His decisions.  This causes us to be in exile. We are in a personal exile and therefore in a general exile.  Let us rid ourselves of negativity and disease.   It eats us from inside and is the opposite of what Hashem wants.  

Let me suggest as follows as well:

How do we prepare the candle for Moshiach? 

•  Let us openly declare and proclaim with Unity, the Covenant that G-d made to our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that the Land of Israel is our Eternal Inheritance

"וַעֲרִיכַת נֵר לְבֶן יִשַׁי מְשִׁיחֶךָ" – איזה נר מדליק המשיח?

בתפילת ימים נוראים בכל העדות מתפללים על "כָּבוֹד לְעַמֶּךָ וכו' שִׂמְחָה לְאַרְצֶךָ וְשָׂשׂוֹן לְעִירֶךָ. וּצְמִיחַת קֶרֶן לְדָוִד עַבְדֶּךָ. וַעֲרִיכַת נֵר לְבֶן יִשַׁי מְשִׁיחֶךָ". מהי עריכת הנר של דוד? ממתי דוד או צאצאיו מדליקים נר בבית המקדש או במקום אחר?

השאלה הזאת יותר קשה אם זוכרים שהנוסח של התפילה הזאת הוא נוסח של פסוק בתהילים (קלב יז) "שָׁם אַצְמִיחַ קֶרֶן לְדָוִד עָרַכְתִּי נֵר לִמְשִׁיחִי" והוא נוסח של כל העדות והנוסחאות. צריך להבין מה כוונת הפסוק בתהילים שמדבר על עריכת הנר של המשיח "בן ישי". בקשה שבאה ביחד עם הבקשה להצמיח את קרנו של דוד 

הסביר ה"מצודות דוד" (מלכים א יא לו) שאין הכוונה לנר במובן הרגיל שלו אלא במובן של משל: "ויקרא המלך כן, על שם שמשפיע ומאיר, ובאורו נראה אור". גם בחינה של נותן ומשפיע וגם בחינה של מי שמורה לעם את הדרך ללכת בה. על זה נאמר "בְּאוֹר פְּנֵי מֶלֶךְ - חַיִּים" (משלי טז טו). ובאופן רמז אפשר לומר שלכן מושחים את המלך בשמן המשחה, על מנת שיאיר פנים לציבור כמו הכהן הגדול שגם הוא נמשח באותו שמן וגם הוא תפקידו להאיר פנים – בדרכו של אהרון הכהן.

על בסיס הפירוש הזה, יש אומרים שהאור האמור פה הוא האור של ירושלים שמאירה כמו נר לעולם כולו. וזה התפקיד לבנות ירושלים על מתכונתה האמיתית מוטל על בן דוד שנקרא בשם מלך המשיח בגלל שנמשח בשמן המשחה, ואע"פ שזה דבר שקורה לו רק פעם אחת בחיים בתחילת דרכו – שמו נקרא עליו כי האירוע הזה משפיע על כל דרכי התנהגות חייו.

My comments.

There is a double standard promoted by CAIR and other such groups as per what constitutes a Hate Crime.   If real Hate,  a call of violence or actual violence is directed against Jews, there is fear to prosecute, fear of Islamic backlash...Any prosecution against  hate crimes in the name of Islam and Jihad and Allah is deterred out  of fear of being accused of hate crimes against Islam and being physically threatened with calls to riot and being prosecuted for Islamophobia.

Hate crimes against Muslims are defined to be any expression that is critical of Islam. Graffitti, cartoons etc.

Freedom of speech is reserved only for those who are tolerant of Islam, Sharia, Jihad etc. 

Those who engage in Freedom of Speech to expose  Evils within Islam and Sharia and Jihad are physically threatened and require to protect their lives and thereby effectively suppressed.

This is the unfortunate situation on College Campus today...

So what? So what if a "Palestinian" girl smacks an Israeli soldier across his cheek.  Turning the other cheek is a classic Jewish ideal, isn't it?  Oh, excuse me it isn't a Jewish ideal, just a Jewish practice. So what if she spits in his face? Maybe it was really rain and we should not jump to conclusions. So what if she kicked him and hit him repeatedly? Perhaps he was standing exactly in the path of her limbs as she merely exercised them. Besides, it was occupied territory.  Anything is possible in the quest for "quiet" and a "good press" in the eyes of the world.  Has not decades of "restraint" has won us tons of friends and admirers? So what if she repeatedly cursed the soldier?  "Sticks and stones can break my bones...  Or maybe her exact words were lost in the translation and the whole thing is a mistake? Sought of like "Jihad" really means peaceful introspection... So what if an Israeli soldier (someone's son or father) quietly absorbed the humiliation as the cameras recorded the shame for the world to see? Israel is debating this latest "incident", and as can be expected, the well-known voices of "reason and temperance" praise the "restraint" of the soldier.  These are the same voices that brought us Arafat and Oslo - Rabin and Peres; the hysteric withdrawal from South Lebanon - Ehud Barak (into which the Hizbullah immediately entered and butchered  our SLA allies who we abandoned) These are the voices who expelled thousands of Jews from Gush Katif and northern Samaria - Ariel Sharon and help create "Gazastan" with its periodic torrent of rockets and death tunnels.  Add to the list the exceptionally brutal expulsion of Jews from Amona - Ehud Olmert. All of the above assured us that their criminal follies would make the world love us. These "moderate and experienced types, applaud the model behavior of the humiliated soldier, representing the mature, rational Israel, Israel that the world will learn to love. There was a time when this humiliating scene would not happen. It was not even a thought, not in the minds of Jew or Arab or any observer. Something has changed. Some of us have become tired. They tired before our enemy has.  They did not have the spirit to endure I have seen and felt that change in the forty years that I live in Israel. Apparently, I came just as the winds began to turn. One could feel it and smell it. I arrived just after the historic Sadat visit to Jerusalem where our ex Nazi neighbor was accepted as a Messiah.  An Arab leader finally smiled at us! Hallelujah! (he remembered to wear a tie of interlacing swastikas - just in case we took him too seriously)  Nothing he said; no demand, no threat could wipe the smile off the faces of those who embraced this true Messiah. He mesmerized many of us.  Israelis began a mass "return Exodus" to Egypt which lasted until Israelis began being gunned down in the land we so wanted to adore and to adore us.  Alas. Same goes for the initial mad rush into  Jordan after our peace treaty with them in which we assured them access to our water, agriculture assistance and the very stability of the king's throne.  We only sought their smile but were rejected again.  What were we doing wrong? The same "moderate voices" urged Israel to give the Golan Heights to Assad (Rabin, Peres, and Barak) in return for the dream of  "eating hummus in Damascus". Why are we so loved starved? Two thousand years of being spurned, humiliated and scorned may have something to do with it. Having our own country - a strong, wealthy free country was supposed to finally change this.  For many, it has not. I have observed that relatively few God-fearing Jews in Israel seem to share the same love obsession.  I wonder if that is just a statistical coincidence. The irrepressible hunger for a warm touch, some acceptance; to make up for millennia of love privation still has some of us in its grip.  There are those who still feel that it is better to be spat upon than be accused by the "world" of unacceptable behavior, i.e. Jews refusing to lay down and to be walked upon.  We don't want to upset anyone out there now, do we? We do not live alone in this world... After all, to whom can we look for our salvation..? So now this "Palestinian" teen is a hero and an example for millions like her who view the u tube clip and will now dare if they did hesitate before. Rest assured that there will be top Jewish lawyers,  journalists and such, falling over themselves to defend this "hero of the resistance to occupation" and squelch the voices of " irresponsible", simplistic Jews who have had just about enough. Fourteen years ago, those who gave the Likud a stunning victory over Labor in the January 2003 election never expected they would be ruled by a party responsible for Oslo and rejected by an overwhelmingly majority of the electorate.  They never expected a government whose parliamentary approval would depend on the support of Arab MKs, as well as on a far-left party like Meretz that wants to transform the Jewish state into "a state of its citizens."  The 2003 election was an affirmation of Zionism.  Ariel Sharon nullified that election and made nonsense of democracy! 

The central issue of that election was "disengagement" – a euphemism for the expulsion of Jews from Gaza and other parts of Israel.  The only reason why the Likud trashed Labor in that election is because Mr. Sharon campaigned against Labor's disengagement/expulsion policy.  Whereas Labor won only 19 seats, the Likud won 38 – a disparity unprecedented in Israel's history.  Yet the new Sharon government, with Labor chairman Shimon Peres as Sharon's viceroy, was hell-bent on creating an Arab state by expelling Jews from Judea and Samaria! 

To appreciate the extent of Sharon's betrayal of the nation, let us tally the number of seats won by parties that opposed disengagement/expulsion on security and Zionist or religious grounds: 

Likud — 38 seats 

Israel B'Aliya — 2 seats (which subsequently joined the Likud) 

National Union — 7 seats 

National Religious Party — 6 seats 

Shas — 11 seats 

United Torah Judaism — 5 seats 

The above electoral results produced a Knesset with 69 of its 120 members opposed to disengagement/expulsion!  But there is more to be said about Sharon's betrayal of the nation.  In that 2003 election, Shinui, which won 15 seats, spoke against unilateral disengagement (but subsequently yielded to Israel's Machiavellian prime minister). 

And so, thanks to Sharon, Israel obtained an ostensibly democratically elected government committed to a policy that was decisively rejected by the electorate!  But how can one rightly attribute this undemocratic state of affairs to the treachery of one man? 

Such treachery could only occur in a country lacking institutional checks and balances, a country whose system of government is intrinsically susceptible to dictatorship.  Yet there is not a single party or faction in the Knesset that exposed this despotic state of affairs; and none called for systemic institutional reform to reverse the disastrous course of this nation.  Why not?  Because every party has a vested interest in preserving the existing system!  No less than the illustrious Alexis de Tocqueville defines this system as "democratic despotism" – a system that enables a democratically government to ignore public opinion with IMPUNITY! 

What perpetuates this despotic system is a simple fact:  In Israel the entire country constitutes a single electoral district in which fixed party lists compete on the basis of proportional representation.  The result is party dictatorship on the hand, and, on the other hand, a Knesset whose members are not individually accountable to the voters in constituency elections.  This renders the Legislature, the Knesset, subservient to the Executive. i.e., the Government,  above all, its Prime Minister.  And now, the Prime Minister, instead of being primus inter pares, can dismiss cabinet ministers as if he were a President of the United States.  (In America, however, the late Mr. Sharon would have been impeached long ago for malfeasance of office.) 

Therefore, those who opposed the expulsion of Jews from their homes in Gaza, but who remained silent about the grotesque structure of a government that made Ariel Sharon the Labor's Party's surrogate prime minister, are not innocent.  Lacking the guts to reveal that Israel is not a genuine democracy, hence, that Israel is in need of "regime change," those who opposed the crime of Gaza – called such by Benjamin Netanyahu's father (!) – will only perpetuate democratic despotism and thereby facilitate the policy of "disengagement" they rightly called evil.◙

The 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize before he even managed to make an impression on the international reality, and who tirelessly repeated his commitment to promoting universal values and morality, is now being portrayed as someone who crossed all normative red lines by allowing Hezbollah and its satellites to carry out crimes undisturbed, even on U.S. soil.

Indeed, according to an expose by the news site Politico, it appears that the Obama administration knowingly thwarted the Drug Enforcement Agency's "Project Cassandra," which was designed to deal a fatal blow to Hezbollah's global logistics, finances and operations. The work was supposed to have exposed the corrupt channels through which enormous revenues from drug deals were funneled. The money was directed, via drug lords and business people with contacts - straight to Hezbollah, and allowed the organization to improve its military capabilities.

The Politico report also said that the regime of President Bashar Assad in Syria, a strategic partner of the Lebanese terrorist group, enjoyed the rotten fruits of this conduit in the form of shipments of conventional and chemical weapons to Damascus during the Syrian civil war. Despite the frightening picture revealed by those involved in Project Cassandra, it quickly became apparent that the upper echelon of the Obama administration, particularly the U.S. Justice and Treasury departments, consistently blocked the effort to eliminate the drugs and weapons axis, thus giving Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah and Assad the quiet and the room to maneuver that they needed.

If even a fraction of the facts detailed in the report by the reliable site are accurate, they would provide sufficient ground to rip off the drapes of righteousness that still cover the true nature of the Obama era. Specifically, if indeed "all the president's men" thwarted the operation to avoid spoiling the relations between Washington and Hezbollah's patron, Iran, in the period when Obama was working feverishly to set up the nuclear deal with Tehran, it expresses the unbearable cynicism of the White House that prided itself on a flawless "ethical code" of conduct in the international arena, including its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This latest affair is like a tunnel that sends us back through time to the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War, when the administration of then-President Harry Truman stopped at nothing to enlist some 1,600 Nazi scientists, engineers and technicians, particularly in the field of missile development. That campaign, which was dubbed Operation Paperclip, is now considered the essence of immoral, inhumane conduct, which ignored the crimes against humanity the candidates had committed.

It is becoming clear that the liberal President Obama did not learn from history, and in complete contradiction of his saintly statements, effectively gave a green light to an entire web of ongoing crimes, based on his perception - ridiculous in itself - that it was in America's national interest to do so.

To sum up, Obama not only refrained from taking action against the ruler of Syria when he crossed all the red lines that had been drawn on chemical warfare but also contributed - if indirectly - to Assad building up his chemical arsenal and deploying it against his own civilian population. Obama deserved a Nobel Prize for his Machiavellian, opportunistic and immoral conduct, which also hurt the security of the U.S.'s partner, Israel.
