Fourteen years ago, those who gave the Likud a stunning victory over Labor in the January 2003 election never expected they would be ruled by a party responsible for Oslo and rejected by an overwhelmingly majority of the electorate.  They never expected a government whose parliamentary approval would depend on the support of Arab MKs, as well as on a far-left party like Meretz that wants to transform the Jewish state into "a state of its citizens."  The 2003 election was an affirmation of Zionism.  Ariel Sharon nullified that election and made nonsense of democracy! 

The central issue of that election was "disengagement" – a euphemism for the expulsion of Jews from Gaza and other parts of Israel.  The only reason why the Likud trashed Labor in that election is because Mr. Sharon campaigned against Labor's disengagement/expulsion policy.  Whereas Labor won only 19 seats, the Likud won 38 – a disparity unprecedented in Israel's history.  Yet the new Sharon government, with Labor chairman Shimon Peres as Sharon's viceroy, was hell-bent on creating an Arab state by expelling Jews from Judea and Samaria! 

To appreciate the extent of Sharon's betrayal of the nation, let us tally the number of seats won by parties that opposed disengagement/expulsion on security and Zionist or religious grounds: 

Likud — 38 seats 

Israel B'Aliya — 2 seats (which subsequently joined the Likud) 

National Union — 7 seats 

National Religious Party — 6 seats 

Shas — 11 seats 

United Torah Judaism — 5 seats 

The above electoral results produced a Knesset with 69 of its 120 members opposed to disengagement/expulsion!  But there is more to be said about Sharon's betrayal of the nation.  In that 2003 election, Shinui, which won 15 seats, spoke against unilateral disengagement (but subsequently yielded to Israel's Machiavellian prime minister). 

And so, thanks to Sharon, Israel obtained an ostensibly democratically elected government committed to a policy that was decisively rejected by the electorate!  But how can one rightly attribute this undemocratic state of affairs to the treachery of one man? 

Such treachery could only occur in a country lacking institutional checks and balances, a country whose system of government is intrinsically susceptible to dictatorship.  Yet there is not a single party or faction in the Knesset that exposed this despotic state of affairs; and none called for systemic institutional reform to reverse the disastrous course of this nation.  Why not?  Because every party has a vested interest in preserving the existing system!  No less than the illustrious Alexis de Tocqueville defines this system as "democratic despotism" – a system that enables a democratically government to ignore public opinion with IMPUNITY! 

What perpetuates this despotic system is a simple fact:  In Israel the entire country constitutes a single electoral district in which fixed party lists compete on the basis of proportional representation.  The result is party dictatorship on the hand, and, on the other hand, a Knesset whose members are not individually accountable to the voters in constituency elections.  This renders the Legislature, the Knesset, subservient to the Executive. i.e., the Government,  above all, its Prime Minister.  And now, the Prime Minister, instead of being primus inter pares, can dismiss cabinet ministers as if he were a President of the United States.  (In America, however, the late Mr. Sharon would have been impeached long ago for malfeasance of office.) 

Therefore, those who opposed the expulsion of Jews from their homes in Gaza, but who remained silent about the grotesque structure of a government that made Ariel Sharon the Labor's Party's surrogate prime minister, are not innocent.  Lacking the guts to reveal that Israel is not a genuine democracy, hence, that Israel is in need of "regime change," those who opposed the crime of Gaza – called such by Benjamin Netanyahu's father (!) – will only perpetuate democratic despotism and thereby facilitate the policy of "disengagement" they rightly called evil.◙

No moral backbone

The 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize before he even managed to make an impression on the international reality, and who tirelessly repeated his commitment to promoting universal values and morality, is now being portrayed as someone who crossed all normative red lines by allowing Hezbollah and its satellites to carry out crimes undisturbed, even on U.S. soil.

Indeed, according to an expose by the news site Politico, it appears that the Obama administration knowingly thwarted the Drug Enforcement Agency's "Project Cassandra," which was designed to deal a fatal blow to Hezbollah's global logistics, finances and operations. The work was supposed to have exposed the corrupt channels through which enormous revenues from drug deals were funneled. The money was directed, via drug lords and business people with contacts - straight to Hezbollah, and allowed the organization to improve its military capabilities.

The Politico report also said that the regime of President Bashar Assad in Syria, a strategic partner of the Lebanese terrorist group, enjoyed the rotten fruits of this conduit in the form of shipments of conventional and chemical weapons to Damascus during the Syrian civil war. Despite the frightening picture revealed by those involved in Project Cassandra, it quickly became apparent that the upper echelon of the Obama administration, particularly the U.S. Justice and Treasury departments, consistently blocked the effort to eliminate the drugs and weapons axis, thus giving Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah and Assad the quiet and the room to maneuver that they needed.

If even a fraction of the facts detailed in the report by the reliable site are accurate, they would provide sufficient ground to rip off the drapes of righteousness that still cover the true nature of the Obama era. Specifically, if indeed "all the president's men" thwarted the operation to avoid spoiling the relations between Washington and Hezbollah's patron, Iran, in the period when Obama was working feverishly to set up the nuclear deal with Tehran, it expresses the unbearable cynicism of the White House that prided itself on a flawless "ethical code" of conduct in the international arena, including its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This latest affair is like a tunnel that sends us back through time to the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War, when the administration of then-President Harry Truman stopped at nothing to enlist some 1,600 Nazi scientists, engineers and technicians, particularly in the field of missile development. That campaign, which was dubbed Operation Paperclip, is now considered the essence of immoral, inhumane conduct, which ignored the crimes against humanity the candidates had committed.

It is becoming clear that the liberal President Obama did not learn from history, and in complete contradiction of his saintly statements, effectively gave a green light to an entire web of ongoing crimes, based on his perception - ridiculous in itself - that it was in America's national interest to do so.

To sum up, Obama not only refrained from taking action against the ruler of Syria when he crossed all the red lines that had been drawn on chemical warfare but also contributed - if indirectly - to Assad building up his chemical arsenal and deploying it against his own civilian population. Obama deserved a Nobel Prize for his Machiavellian, opportunistic and immoral conduct, which also hurt the security of the U.S.'s partner, Israel.

Klein released the following statement: The Zionist Organization of America strongly praises the statements by unnamed senior Trump administration officials, reported by AP, that Jerusalem's Western Wall (a/k/a the Kotel or Wailing Wall) will be affirmed now and forever to be part of Israel.  The AP report stated that the Trump officials "essentially ruled out any scenario that didn't maintain Israeli control over the holiest ground in Judaism."  ("White House Signals Western Wall Has to Be Part of Israel," by Ken Thomas, AP, Dec. 15, 2017.) The Western Wall was part of the encasement constructed around and abutting the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, where Solomon's Temple (the First Jewish Temple) stood from the mid-10th century BCE until its destruction in 587 BCE, and the Second Jewish Temple stood from 516 BCE until the Romans destroyed it in 70 CE.  The Western Wall abuts the holiest Jewish site where Jews from all over the world come to pray day and night.  Archeological excavations under and around the Western Wall have uncovered Jewish ritual baths (mikvahs) that worshipers used to purify themselves before praying in the Jewish Temple and on the Jewish Temple Mount; passageways including a passageway that scholars believe King David traversed from his palace on the site of the Tower of David to pray on the Temple Mount; Second Temple era streets; the Hasmonean Hall where the members of the Sanhedrin (Jewish Assembly) gathered outside the Temple Mount; and the Great Bridge that Jewish priests (Kohanim) walked across on their way to the Temple. The AP report misleadingly refers to Israel "capturing" and "occupying" Jerusalem's Old City and "the rest of east Jerusalem in the 1967 war." The AP report misleadingly omits that … this area was designated for the Jewish homeland under international law, and that the majority of Jerusalem's residents were Jews. Yet, Jordan expelled and murdered eastern Jerusalem's Jewish population during Jordan's illegal occupation.  In 1967… Jordan proceeded to attack Israel again, [and] Israel regained the eastern portion of Jerusalem in the ensuing 1967 defensive war. It is particularly fitting that the Trump administration's statement was made during Hanukkah.  Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabees' rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE and the re-establishment of religious freedom for the Jewish people after the Seleucids' harsh repression.  Notably, the Maccabees' rededication of the Second Jewish Temple occurred eight centuries before the birth of Islam. The Palestinian Authority (PA) reacted by once again attempting to falsely portray Israel as an "occupier" of the land to which the Jewish nation has the historic, religious and international legal right.  (See, e.g., "Mort Klein – There Is No Israeli 'Occupation': It's Not Arab Land and 98 Percent of Palestinian-Arabs Live Under Arab Rule," by Morton Klein, Breitbart, Sept. 29, 2017; "UN Resolution 242 Entitles Israel to Secure Borders Beyond the Insecure 1949 Armistice Lines," Oct. 2, 2017 (quoting US Ambassador David Friedman); and "Mort Klein: Jerusalem Was Never Holy to Muslims," Sept. 7, 2017.) Unfortunately, the AP injected several biased false statements into its reports on the White House statements, which were repeated in New York Times and other articles.  For instance: The AP report misleadingly stated that the Western Wall "abuts some of the Islamic world's most revered sites."  The Western Wall in fact abuts the Jewish people's holiest site: the Temple Mount.  The Al-Aqsa mosque was built atop the site of the Jewish Temple, to attempt to de-Judaize and show superiority to the Jewish people's holiest site.   The AP report misleadingly stated that the "[Western] wall is beyond Israel's pre-1967 borders." In fact, the pre-1967 lines were not binding international "borders."  The pre-1967 lines were merely the "1949 armistice (ceasefire) demarcation lines" marking approximately the point where the fighting stopped, after six Arab nations invaded and tried to destroy Israel in 1948-1949 and seized the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, Judaism's holiest sites and Judea/Samaria.  The land designated for the Jewish homeland by internationally binding law (including the 1922 Mandate, preserved by the UN Charter's Jewish people's clause, Article 80) encompassed all of Jerusalem and Judea/Samaria – far more area than the 1949 Armistice lines.  Notably, the 1949 armistice agreements signed by Israel and neighbors Jordan and Egypt specifically stated that the armistice lines were "without prejudice" to a future political settlement.    The AP report misleadingly refers to Israel "capturing" and "occupying" Jerusalem's Old City and "the rest of east Jerusalem in the 1967 war." The AP report misleadingly omits that Jordan illegally captured the eastern portion of Jerusalem – including the millennia-old Jewish Quarter and Judaism's holiest sites in the Old City- during the Arab League's 1948-1949 war attempting to annihilate Israel, and that Jordan illegally occupied these areas for the next 19 years.  AP omits that this area was designated for the Jewish homeland under international law, and that the majority of Jerusalem's residents were Jews. Yet, Jordan expelled and murdered eastern Jerusalem's Jewish population during Jordan's illegal occupation.  In 1967, after Israel begged Jordan not to attack, and Jordan proceeded to attack Israel again, Israel regained the eastern portion of Jerusalem in the ensuing 1967 defensive war.   The ZOA greatly appreciates the Trump administration's statement – and hopes that AP and other press outlets will fix the biased and inaccurate statements in their articles.

The chutzpah of those who continue to attack and deride President Trump while letting Obama off the hook, even praising his presidency, is beyond comprehension.

Particularly the Jews among you who continue to support the most anti-Israel President in history and refuse to celebrate, yes, CELEBRATE, the friendly actions of President Trump need their loyalty to Israel seriously examined.

Compare Obama's action in the UN Security Council in December 2016 to that of Trump and Nikki Haley today. Do you need more proof of who Obama was and who is Trump?

Today's publication in Politico titled The Secret Backstory of How Obama Let Hezbollah off the Hook is but one more manifestation out of many of the despicable hostility Israel suffered at the hands of Obama for eight long years.

Obama's actions described in the article are nothing short of criminal and must be investigated and indictments issued.

BOMBSHELL: Obama Protected Hezbollah Drug and Human Trafficking Rings To Appease Iran

In a bombshell report by POLITICO's Josh Meyer, the Obama administration is accused of protecting Hezbollah drug and human trafficking rings to help ensure a nuclear deal with Iran was achieved. POLITICO reports:

Project Cassandra reached higher into the hierarchy of the conspiracy, Obama administration officials threw an increasingly insurmountable series of roadblocks in its way, according to interviews with dozens of participants who in many cases spoke for the first time about events shrouded in secrecy, and a review of government documents and court records. When Project Cassandra leaders sought approval for some significant investigations, prosecutions, arrests and financial sanctions, officials at the Justice and Treasury departments delayed, hindered or rejected their requests.

The Justice Department declined requests by Project Cassandra and other authorities to file criminal charges against major players such as Hezbollah's high-profile envoy to Iran, a Lebanese bank that allegedly laundered billions in alleged drug profits, and a central player in a U.S.-based cell of the Iranian paramilitary Quds force. And the State Department rejected requests to lure high-value targets to countries where they could be arrested.
