bs"d More on the Great Assembly at Marienbad 1937 from "When Silence Is a Sin"

BS"D
From "When Silence Is A Sin"
Concering the 1937 Meeting In Marienbad
Here we see the great importance that the Lubavitcher Rebbe attaches to the concept of a pointed ruling on the subject of giving land for peace. On one occasion the Rebbe referred to a certain ruling which was issued a generation ago.

This is none other than the resolution of the "Great Assembly"[5] (5697-1937) which resolved that each and every compromise made regarding the Holy Land, which was given to us by the Holy One according to its boundaries,[6] is null and void.

These are the Rebbe's comments, on Motzoei Shabbos Mishpatim 5738 (1978):

The explicit ruling which was issued at the Great Assembly states that it is unequivocably forbidden to surrender even the tiniest particle of land within the boundaries of the Holy Land. It is astonishing that people do not publicize and proclaim this ruling in the greatest possible way. The fact that there are those who wish to conceal the ramifications of this ruling by concocting contrived interpretations of it, will be to no avail. This ruling is like every other Jewish law, for "the word of G-d will certainly endure."
The Rebbe concludes:

May it be G-d's Will that everyone will look at the Code of Jewish Law, chapter 329 (if they do not want to trust me), and they will see that the law is clear: it is forbidden to cede even a small piece of the Land of Israel to a non-Jew. The students and descendants of those Torah giants who participated in the Great Assembly in Marienbad should publicly proclaim to their students that they have a clear ruling instructing us how to conduct ourselves. They should continue spreading word of this until all the Jews know of the ruling."
The Rebbe even referred to those situations where there is nothing that can be done except protest:

Since we see that we have to contend with these people — it is a sign that our only concern must be to protest against their actions which are not in accordance with the Torah. They are in conflict with the Torah, and the ruling of the Code of Jewish Law, Laws of the Sabbath.[7] This law states that one must take up arms on the Sabbath and not allow the enemy to approach a border town. This law even applies outside of Israel, because the issue at hand has nothing to do with who the land belongs to, or the concept of not antagonizing the nations; the one and only reason for this ruling is the danger to the lives of large numbers of Jews, G-d forbid.
Regarding the effectiveness of a Rabbi's ruling, we may take note of the Rebbe's address of Sivan 28, 5746 (1986):

Every Rabbi in his respective generation is a leader in that generation — like a giant among knights; as the Prophet Shmuel was in his generation, or Moshe in his. When such a Rabbi issues a ruling of Jewish Law, it has an effect on the world — on the world, in such a way that the reality of the world shall conform to the ruling the Torah.[8]

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) See Page 59ff. The Rebbe's insistence upon the Rabbis' ruling is based upon the important distinction between regular court decisions and Rabbinic decisions. A decision based on Biblical instruction has the unique ability to affect the physical world, and change the course of normal events. See also note 83.

  2. (Back to text) Or, King of the Worlds. These are the opening words of the fifth hakafah circuit on Shemini Atzeres/Simchas Torah. The Rebbe thus explained the hakafah of Melech Olamim to be a particularly auspicious time for the Rabbis to issue rulings which can have a tangible impact in the world.

  3. (Back to text) Tractate Gittin 62a.

  4. (Back to text) This refers to an assembly of Torah leaders that took place in Marienbad, Czechoslovakia, in 1937. Attending were the (then) Gerrer Rebbe, the Alexander Rebbe, the Sadigerer Rebbe, and many other Torah giants including Rabbi Menachem Zemba, the Chief Rabbi of Warsaw, who died at the hands of the Nazis.

  5. (Back to text) In the Pentateuch, Bamidbar, ch. 34, G-d explicitly demarcates the boundaries of the Holy Land and allocates the entire area to the Jewish nation as an everlasting gift. This allocation was acknowledged by President Clinton when he was questioned in the Knesset in 1995. He was clearly shaken by this question. Yitzchak Rabin actually interjected trying to save the President from embarrassment.

  6. (Back to text) Ch. 329 states that if non-Jews besiege a border town where Jews live, then the Jews are required to desecrate the Sabbath to avoid its capture and the subsequent vulnerability of the rest of the country to open prey. "These people" referred to by the Rebbe, are the politicians and even religious leaders, who justify the ceding of parts of the Land of Israel, against the clear ruling in Chapter 329 of the Code of Jewish Law.

Brutal - no photographers allowed! - unrestrained violence reported against teenage girls ISRAELIS DEMOLISH JEWISH HOMES- INTOLERABLE!!!

bs"d

Why are Israeli armed forces attacking young idealistic religious teenage girls? These girls believe that Jews have a right to settle in all of our Biblical Homeland. The gov't of Israel is enforcing the "rule of law" that claims that Jews are occupiers and illegal.

Please forward. The only way to stop this kind of abuse on these kids is to report on it. Covering it up will only encourage more of the same abuse and destruction of Jewish Homes in Judea and Samaria.  We all have a responsibility to these teenagers who are risking attack.  We need to protest now in order that demolitions of this sort does not happen large scale.  This is a litmus test.  If we are Silent then government forces know they can get away with it.  If we protest loudly, and publicize, it will be much more difficult for them to do so.  Let us validate the struggle for our right to settle in all of our Biblical Homeland.

AMERICANS FOR A SAFE ISRAEL/AFSI  has consistently protested against the cruel, inhumane, and senseless demolition of Jewish homes. It is a Chilul HaShem of the highest order. We plead with the Israeli government to come to its senses and to stop these actions that only empower Israel's enemies. It is outrageous that Israel's most loyal and dedicated citizens must be subjected to the bullying and brutality of Israeli forces who should be fighting the enemy, not those dedicated to preserving Jewish homes and land. PLEASE - stop these actions NOW!!

Security Forces Victorious Over Teen Girls in Overnight Demolitions at Two Outposts
By: Yori Yanover
Published: May 17th, 2012

Security forces were brutal last night, clashing violently with teenage girls in two Jewish outposts.

In what could be a dress rehearsal for the evacuation and demolition of Ulpana Hill, Israeli security forces accompanied a bulldozer which overnight demolished a stone structure in the Ramat Migron outpost and two temporary structures in the Oz Zion outpost in the Benjamin region of Judea and Samaria. Clashes erupted during the demolition, between right-wing activists, most of them teenage girls, and security forces. The Tatzpit news agency reports that six activists were arrested, five of them girls.

Police, Border Guard and Civil Administration troops arrived at a little before midnight last night at the Ramat Migron Outpost in Benjamin region, with a bulldozer.

Dozens of right-wing activists flocked to the scene to protest the planned destruction. The outpost was celebrating a wedding that night, of a young man and woman who are both local residents.

Protected by the troops, the bulldozer, which was using the path that had been cleared in preparation for the wedding, proceeded to level a stone structure, which was home to the boys living in the outpost.
After the successful destruction of the building in Ramat Migron, the forces left the area and moved toward the Oz Zion outpost, where they were met by and clashed with several right-wing activists, all of them teens. Despite the teens' resistance, the security forces demolished two temporary structures.
According to the Tatzpit report, six teens were arrested during the clashes, including five girls.

The agency reports that government forces were brutal in their treatment of the protesting teenagers, using unrestrained violence. Some of the girls are reported to have been injured. The Oz Etzion outpost is considered a closed military zone and reporters were not allowed in to cover the clashes. Photographers were attacked by police with blinding projectors that prevented covering the violence.

As has been their habit in such confrontations, the Border Guard policemen did not wear their name tags on their uniforms-a violation of police regulations-and only agreed to reveal them after being pressed to do so by reporters.

Some police covered their faces with bandanas throughout the operation.

A local resident told the Tatzpit agency: "It appears that police intelligence discovered our plan to build a new home in Israel, and decided to try to destroy our celebration. In the past we've observed this pattern of the police, to commit their destruction just when we celebrate a joyful wedding or an engagement of local residents. But we will not be deterred."

The April, 2012 AFSI Chizuk misson on a rooftop in the Old City with Ateret Cohanim

It was our great pleasure to have Fern Sidman, popular journalist with Arutz Sheva and many American Jewish media outlets, accompany us on our recent AFSI Chizuk mission to Israel. Fern wrote up an overview report of our travels, concentrating on our connections with the people and the land of Israel ,which is uppermost in the minds of our AFSI members. Time and space did not permit the inclusion of our visits to the Rishon Le Zion museum and synagogue, a Golan winery, the shofar maker, the boatride on the Kinneret, the Yom Hazikaron evening at the Knesset, our visit to Har Herzl on Yom HaZikaron, the exploration of the ancient synagogue in the Jordan Valley,  our visit to the Lebanon border, and the Yom HaAtzmaut BBQ at Kidmat Zion, catered by the Luria family. Although uniting with our Israeli brethren is primary on our itineraries, AFSI also tries to include some lighter moments. To savor the full complement of experiences and events that are packed into the AFSI Chizuk missions to Israel, plan to join us on our next one: NOVEMBER 7-15, 2012, including Shabbat Chaye Sarah in Hebron, and sooooo much more. AFSI AND "SETTLERS" ARE BRETHREN

By Fern Sidman

As the semi-annual Americans For a Safe Israel (AFSI) Chizuk Mission to Israel drew to a conclusion on May 1st, the tour participants told the media that, "Our beloved brethren living on settlements slated to be dismantled by the Israeli government are not alone. We stand with them and our mission will never cease until every Jew has the right to live in any part of Eretz Yisroel." Having distinguished itself from other tours of Israel that  focus exclusively on sights of historic interest, AFSI conducts a thorough exploration of the entire settlement movement; providing emotional and material support to these beleaguered communities.

Ranging from visits with Gush Katif evacuees now living near Ashkelon, to those in Hevron who have been evicted from their homes, to such settlements as Migron and Bet El/Ulpana where scheduled government demolitions are expected to take place, AFSI members devoted their time, energy and resources to assisting these courageous Jews in maintaining their rightful presence in their homes. "For these people, this is a dark moment in the Jewish history. Their future is fraught with arduous challenges and we are here to say that we are with them in the days, weeks and years ahead," said AFSI members.

Commencing their trip with a visit to the new settlements of the Yesodot region near Ashkelon where the former Gush Katif evacuees are re-building their lives and communities, AFSI members were welcomed by Anita Tucker of the Gush Katif settlement of Nezzer Hazzani. With palpable ebullience in her voice, Ms. Tucker said during an extensive tour of the community which is currently under construction, "Every day we come a step closer to re-establishing our lives. You can see the houses that are being built, along with the community center and synagogue and even though it's not under construction as of yet, with G-d's help, you will see our red and yellow playground for our children."

Extending plaudits to Ms. Tucker for her hospitality and dedication, Helen Freedman, executive director of AFSI declared, "Because we at AFSI have always maintained a close affinity with our dear friends in Gush Katif, our support to these extraordinary people who have embarked on the Herculean task of re-building their glorious communities continues unabated. We wish to recognize the dynamic work of Anita Tucker, Dror Vanunu, Yael Ellenberg and Moshe and Rochel Saperstein as well."

As the residents of Hevron find their sovereignty under siege by the government of Israel, AFSI members met with community leader David Wilder, who led an extensive tour of the city, including the recently purchased, occupied and now evacuated home known as Beit HaMachpela that has been at the center of a political storm. Yifat Akobi, whose family had been evicted from the home, said, "Through a directive by the civil administration, the Jewish residents of Beit Hamachpela were ordered to leave their home. This eviction order was predicated on a statement by the Arab seller of the property that there was a "problem" with the documents  of ownership, yet no concrete evidence buttressing his claim has been proven. We will continue to assert our rights by camping outside the home in a tent until we can re-enter our legally purchased home."

Mr. Wilder referenced the previous publicized case of Jews being forcibly extricated from Beit HaShalom, another building legally purchased by Jews on the spurious claim by the Arab seller that although he sold the property and received handsome compensation, he "changed his mind and gave the money back". In court and in front of witnesses, the seller was unable to produce any material evidence of this alleged transaction. "If all this was not enough, most recently Jews were also to be evicted from Beit Zachariah. It is not difficult to reach the tragic conclusion that the Defense Ministry of Israel, under the leadership of Ehud Barak and other prominent members of the government do not believe that their should be a Jewish presence in the holy city of Hevron. With all the court wrangling, our legal expenses have reached astronimcal proportions, but we will not relinquish our G-d given right to live here," declared Mr. Wilder.

While standing only steps away from the Ma'arat HaMachpela, Mr. Wilder thanked AFSI for their unwavering support. It was at this juncture that AFSI members initiated a spontaneous demonstration for the Jewish right of sovereignty in Hevron when a Chilean government official who was accompanying the local Palestinian governor of the region told the AFSI assemblage that they had no right to pray there. Chants of "Hevron is Jewish!" could be heard as a heated exchange took place between them and the cadre of Palestinian apologists.

Also visiting the new Jewish settlement of Eitam, near Efrat, AFSI members planted trees with the help of "Women in Green" leader Nadia Matar. "The last time we planted trees here, the Arabs ripped them out, but this will not serve as a deterrent to our right to live here," said Ms. Matar. Pointing to the illegal appropriation of land and wheat fields by Arabs, Ms. Matar expressed her gratitude to AFSI for making the journey to the rocky hilltop to express tangible support for a future Jewish presence there. We have subsequently learned that the newly planted trees were also torn out by the Arabs. Nadia and Yehudit hope to plant larger trees, once they solve the water problem. Perhaps then, the Arabs will fail in their efforts to uproot the WIG work.

Guiding AFSI members through the cobblestone streets of the old city of Jerusalem was Dan Luria of Ateret Cohanim, the organization dedicated to reclaiming and restoring buildings and property originally owned by Jews and expropriated by Arabs throughout the last few centuries. "The miracles we saw after the liberation of the old city of Jerusalem after the 1967 war represented the second stage of our redemption," Mr. Luria declared. Telling AFSI members that today, "5000 Jews live in the old city of Jerusalem, and of that number 1000 live in areas outside of the Jewish quarter, it is our goal to see this number grow exponentially so that we may declare our rights to all of old Jerusalem." Explaining the fatal consequences that would most definitely befall an Arab who sold his house in the old city to a Jew, Mr. Luria said, "For the last 33 years, no Arab who works with Ateret Cohanim has ever been killed. We spirit them overseas to a safe destination."

"The Torah is replete with references to the redemption of Jerusalem", said Mr. Luria. "In sefer Shmuel Bet, Hashem tells Dovid HaMelech to buy Jerusalem and redeem it. The Ramban says that we suffered devastating plagues because we forgot Jerusalem. It is our sacred obligation to redeem all parts of the old city," he continued.

Continuing his tour into the heart of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, Mr. Luria guided the AFSI contingent in to Beit Wittenberg, now owned by Ateret Cohanim. Originally puchased by Moshe Wittenberg in the 1880s in a deal brokered by Eliezer Ben Yehuda (the father of the modern Hebrew language), it was discovered that the building was once the famous Mediterreanean Hotel where Mark Twain stayed in Jerusalem when he visited in 1867. "One hundred years after this property was purchased by the Wittenberg family, former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon bought it in the 1980s. Because he thought it was important for Jews to be able to live anywhere in Jerusalem, he made his residence here," said Mr. Luria.

After leading the AFSI group beneath the walls of the Old City, on a tour of King Zedekiah's cave, located between the Damascus and Herod gates, Mr. Luria then took the group to Har HaZeitim, where he was joined by Jeff Daube, former AFSI board member and current Jerusalem representative of the Zionist Organization of America. Showing the tour participants the rampant Arab desecration of Jewish graves there, Mr. Luria said, "This 3000 year-old cemetery, where great rabbis and leaders are buried had been tranformed in to a garbage dump by the Arabs, as they stoned visitors, firebombed cars, and led goat herds through it, as well as having donkey races. Anywhere between 40,000 and 60,000 Jewish graves have been destroyed by the Arabs."

Answering the call for a Jewish presence in the area, Ateret Cohanim, (with the generous financial assistance of renowned Jewish philanthropist Irving Moskowitz), built Ma'ale HaZeitim, the Jewish neighborhood near the Mount of Olives. "Jerusalem is our home; and if the Jewish people are the rightful owners of this holy city, we must unabashedly and unequivocally possess this land and behave as owners," said Mr. Luria.

From there, AFSI members celebrated Yom Ha'Atzmaut in grand style with at the Netzer settlement in the Gush Etzion bloc. Amid dancing to traditional Israeli music, Women In Green leader, Nadia Matar, welcomed Helen Freedman and the AFSI participants and expressed her gratitude to them for their continued support. "We cannot thank AFSI enough for their unwavering loyalty and great assistance. Every time they come to Israel, they visit with us; always offering to help in any way they can and for that we are very appreciative," said Ms. Matar.

AFSI members were treated to a most pleasant surprise when during the celebration at Netzer, they had the opportunity to meet with former Soviet refuseniks, Yosef Begun and Professor Dov Rogansky of Hebrew University. "I am thrilled to see these wonderful Jewish activists here at Netzer and among them are many who championed the cause of my freedom and the freedom of countless other Jews from the former Soviet Union", said Mr. Begun.

No AFSI trip to Israel would be complete without a visit with their friend, Aryeh King, of the Israel Land Fund. Meeting him in Beit Hanina, in the northern part of East Jerusalem, AFSI members listened intently as Mr. King explained the dilemma he finds himself in as he attempts to reclaim land belonging to Jews that have been illegally occupied by Arab squatters for decades. "The area we are standing in belongs to Jews and that has been proven by the court. Even its name, Beit Hanina has Jewish origins as it was named after Hanina Ben Dosa. Before 1948, these homes belonged to Jews. When the JNF sold property bought with Jewish donations to Hebrew University, they then sold it to Arabs for rock bottom prices," Mr. King said ruefully.

He added that, "We offered to buy the land from Hebrew University but they declined our offer because they were afraid that their donors would no longer contribute to them if it was discovered that they sold property to "right-wing Jews" in Israel.  It is Mr. King's objective to build a new Jewish community in Beit Hanina which will be called Nof Shmuel, after the Tomb of Shmuel Hanavi, which is visible from the new properties to the west.

As they headed for Tiberias to spend Shabbat, AFSI members made stops to Daliat at Carmel/Usfiye where they visited with Druze leader Riad Hassoun who presented an informative and colorful tour of the village. Stopping at the Yad L'Banim memorial to the fallen Druze soldiers, Riad said, "We Druze are proud to have  served in the Israeli army and we are proud to be part of this great history."

Since securing a Jewish presence throughout the land of Israel is a main priority for AFSI, they then visited with both Aharon Pulver of the Israel Independence Fund (IIF) and Mayor Shimon Gafson of Nazareth Illit. During an slide presentation of the city, Mr. Gafson explained that Jewish homes were purchased by Arabs with cash provided to them by petroleum rich Arab countries. "We are now buying back our original properties from Arabs and we do not tolerate illegal Arab building which is a pervasive phenomenon throughout Israel. Right now, we are offering 3-bedroom apartments for as low as $120,000. We are encouraging Jews to come back to both the lower and upper Galilee region, where they once represented the majority."

As AFSI members spent a most relaxing Shabbat in Tiberias with their guide, Era Rappaport and his wife,  they were joined by MK Ayoob Kara, and Israel Danziger. Danziger is the director of Mishmeret Yesha, an organization that trains rapid response teams to counter terrorist attacks in settlements and yeshivos throughout Judea and Samaria. Enlightening AFSI members to the current state of affairs that the settlement movement finds itself in, in relation to the Israeli government's plans to demolish what they perceive to be "illegal outposts", Mr. Danziger called for unity amongst residents of Judea and Samaria and exhorted them to chose representatives that will protect their interests.

While in the Golan Heights on the following day, AFSI members made a stop at a most special museum dedicated to those forcibly expelled from Gush Katif at Avnei Eitan, a settlement where Gush Katif families have relocated to. The moving exhibit also included a most powerful and emotionally wrenching film of the birth, expansive growth and ultimate demise of the once thriving Gush Katif communities. Addressing the AFSI contingent was a therapist working with children from Gush Katif who are still suffering from horrific and sustaining trauma.

After spending their last night of the AFSI tour at the Midreshet Golan guest house in the Golan Heights, the tour members concluded their trip with visits to Elon Moreh, where they were given a most spectacular and informative tour of the region of Schechem by community leader Pinchas Fuchs. From there, AFSI visited the 777 Hilltop community near Itamar, where they met with the courageous shepherd Tomer Pnini. With only two families living in the same house, these shepherds have been consistently and brutally attacked by local Arabs who have stolen their sheep. Pointing to a scar on his forehead, Mr. Pnini said, "Each day we encounter a struggle between us and Arabs from the town of Aqaba who come with sticks and iron bars. Just two weeks ago we saw two tractors of terrorists. We sent our children back with the flocks and our wives do guard duty. If you try to defend yourself by shooting at these attackers, your arms will be confiscated by the army of the Israeli government," he said.

The settlement of Chavat Gilad was AFSI's next stop as the glowing faces of the community's children lit up as they enjoyed the brand new state-of-the-art playground that had been built with help of AFSI members and funds from the Israel Independence Fund. Standing with the children on Chivat Gilad, AFSI executive director, Helen Freedman said, "We've seen and heard the pain of our people who live in this region; these amazing people who wage a battle for a Jewish presence in the land of Israel, each and every day. Now, we are with the next generation. These wonderful and precious children who will follow in the footsteps of their parents; who will grow and flourish in these communities and we are very proud to be in a position to provide them with a playground just like other children have."

From there AFSI members visited the Bet El/Ulpana community and were guests in the home of  American-born, Alex Traiman, the writer and director of the powerful documentary "Iranium" which explores the menacing threat of a nuclear powered Iran.

Speaking of recent controversy surrounding the Israeli Supreme Court's pending order to demolish five of the 14 buildings comprising the Ulpana neighborhood of Bet El, Mr. Traiman said, "Yesterday, the international media was here and they made us feel that we were thieves on our own land. They accuse us of building our homes on private Palestinian land and nothing could be further from the truth. In the year 2000, the Bet El Development Company paid $79,000 to a grandson of the original property owner, according to Jordanian land records. In 2007, an affiliate of Peace Now made bogus claims that the land was purchased from the wrong grandson of the original property owner and it was his cousin who was the rightful owner of the land. After getting a ruling in favor of the petitioner from a Palestinian Authority court, the Peace Now people then took that ruling to the Israeli Supreme Court to petition for demolition."

The next stop on the AFSI tour was to the embattled settlement of Migron where tour members were greeted by Aviella Deitch, a Milwaukee native who now serves as spokesperson for the community. Founded in 1999, subsequent to the presentation of facts by an archeological team that the area contained a significant Jewish historical presence, the Israeli government stepped in to help when several dozen Jewish families moved there. Now, says Ms. Deitch, "A suit was filed in the Israeli Supreme Court which claims that Migron was built on privately owned Arab land. The plaintiff in the suit was not listed as an Arab or Arabs but as Peace Now on the complainants' behalf. The homes of three families here have already been demolished and even though the Arabs eventually dropped their case against us because they could not produce the necessary documentation proving that the land belonged to them, the Israeli Supreme Court's ruling still stands and Migron is slated to be demolished this coming August.'

The final stop on the AFSI tour was to the thriving town on Kedumim in the northwestern Shomron. It was there that AFSI members met Raphaella Segal, the exuberant Assistant Mayor of the community. Leading AFSI members on a tour of Kedumim, she pointed to the very place that the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin addressed the community and affirmed his complete support for the growth of Kedumim and other communities like it in the region.

Showing the tour participants the various satellite communities of Kedumim, located on hilltops surrounding it, Ms. Segal said, "It was with the incredibly generous support of people such as yourself and the generosity of Irving and Charna Moskowitz that we were able to build the synagogue that you see. We have also installed high-tech security systems." She added that, "Today Kedumim has a school for Ethiopian girls and a school for boys with ADD and ADHD. We also have a music school that was donated by Cleveland philanthropist Dennis Seaman in memory of his father. For this and much more, we are very thankful."

Hosting the AFSI group for their farewell dinner at their home, Ms. Segal and her husband beseeched the AFSI group to make Kedumim their first stop on their next trip. "Tonight, we are enjoying your last evening in Israel with you, but please the next time you come, please make us your first stop so we may enjoy the future developments of this community together with great joy, said Ms. Segal.

On the way to the airport, AFSI members voiced their thoughts and feelings about the Spring 2012 Chizuk Mission. "I am very blessed to be a part of this holy mission to Israel. AFSI is so unique, because unlike other tours, they truly reach out in so many tangible ways to those Jews struggling to maintain a Jewish life in our biblical homeland. AFSI members are always giving; be it through monetary contributions or emotional and psychological support to their brothers and sisters. You can see that AFSI members really care as the  the pain of Israel's reality is etched on their faces. May G-d continue to bless all those people in every community that we've visited with strength to carry on and may He bless AFSI for their constant devotion and dedication", said Nancy, a nurse from the New York area.

Let me preface my remarks by saying that the inspiration of these words comes from having lived in close proximity to Hebron, Ir Avot, the city of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in the 1980s.  One can not help but absorb the Kedusha of this very holy place.

Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah re: Jewish State, Oct. 1937

 bs"d

Please note the highlighted words.

In 1937 in Marienbad, the Third Kenessiah of Agudas Yisroel was held. Here is positive proof that the majority of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah in 1937 voted in favor of a Jewish State and said that relinquishment of the Holy Land given to the Jewish people by G-d has no validity. It seems from their words that they are in favor of a Jewish State with the qualification that we must pursue expanding its borders and ensuring that the laws of a Jewish State will be founded on religion and tradition Let the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah of our generation be true to their lineage, follow this declaration and actively join and unite with the multitudes of Jews that desire the same.

Taken from the journal HaPardes (volume 11, Issue 7, October 1937), 75 years ago, reprinted in Mishpacha Issue 179, 6 Cheshvan 5768, October 17,2007 Page 26)————————————————————————————————————-

"On Sunday, 16 Elul, the great Torah leaders discussed the question of a Jewish State, and reached the greatly anticipated decision of the congress. It was a stormy assembly, attended by the Rebbes of Gur, Ghorkov, Boyan, Sadigura, and the great Torah schoilars members of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (Rabbinical Council). A great battle took place, over seven hours, with struggles about every minute detail of the decision.

"Rabbi Wasserman, Rabbi Kotler, Rabbi Rottenberg of Antwerp, and rabbis from Czechoslovakia and Hungary were unanimous in rejecting any proposal for a Jewish State on either side of the Jordan River even if it were established as a religious state, because such a regime would be a form of heresy in our faith in the belief in the coming of the Mashiach and especially since this little Jewish State would be built on heresy and desecration of the Name of G-d.

"Arguing against them were the Rebbes of Boyan and Sadigura. Rabbi Tzirelson, the president of the congress, Rabbi [Aharon] Lewin of Reisha [the head of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah] and Rabbi Sorotzkin, [who said that] it is possible to agree, according to the laws of the Torah, to the establishment of a Jewish State in a portion of the Eretz Yisael without denying the belief in the coming of redeemer. There is no need to be concerned that the nonreligious would use the Jewish State to attack our religion. therefore, it is forbidden to reject entirely the matter of the Jewish State; rather we must pursue expanding its borders and ensuring that the laws of a Jewish State will be founded on religion and tradition, and we must protest that they did not consult frum Judaism and did not include its leaders in this discussion.

"Those in favor won the vote! All the decisions were accepted affirmatively."

Although the majority of the congress seemed to be in favor of the partition plan, the text of the resolution of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah contains the statements. " The foundation of the Jewish peoples right to the Holy Land is based on the Torah and the prophets…A Jewish State not based on the principles of Torah is a denial of Jewish origin, is opposed to the identity and to the true stature of our people, and undermines the basis of existence of our people…Any relinquishment of the Holy Land given to the Jewish people by G-d has no validity" (HaPardes 11:6)

Rabbi Algaze the Rav of Chaburat Yisroel in Forest Hills writes to a fellow Rav, (distributed with Rabbi Algaze's permission)

In the Moetzes Gedole Hatorah of 1937 in Marienbad, the Gedolim argued whether it was permissible for us to accept the partition plan which implied the renunciation of half of Eretz Israel. Although the majority voted in favor of partition, they did it because if we did not accept the plan. Israel would have gotten nothing. The situation today is not the same. Today we have the whole land and giving away any part of the land falls under the prohibition of "lo tehonem" (do not give them gifts) and contradicts directly the Ramban who says we are not allowed to leave the land in enemies' hands. If we cannot abandon the land, how much less we are allowed to actively giving away parts of the land. In any case, at that meeting in 1937, although the majority voted in favor of the partition plan, the resolution contained a clear declaration about the inalienable rights of the Jewish people to the entire land, " The foundation of the Jewish people's right to the Holy Land is based on the Torah and the prophets…A Jewish State not based on the principles of Torah is a denial of Jewish origin, is opposed to the identity and to the true stature of our people, and undermines the basis of existence of our people…Any relinquishment of the Holy Land given to the Jewish people by G-d has no validity" (HaPardes 11:6)

....  Rabbi Algaze continues....
It seems to me that the problem here is not what answers or opinions are given but rather that we are hearing nothing from the Rabbis. That is the problem. To leave matters of such importance in the hands of non religious people, who have abandoned the Torah and our history in the altar of modernity and hedonism, is an egregious error. As Rav Teichenthal complained and campaigned, sadly in vain, against the leaders of his time during the Shoah, this is the time that good people should complain to the Rabbis and demand that they do more. " The Lubavitcher Rebbe said about this state of affairs, "Silence is a sin".

At that conference in Marienbad, the Gedole Israel complained bitterly that the discussions concerning the establishment of the State of Israel did not include them. Today, living in a democratic society, when many people look up to our Rabbis for guidance, why aren't the Rabbis speaking up?  I firmly believe that if prominent rabbis would speak up even the government and the media would listen. In fact, if the Gedole Israel spoke about our rights to the Land, if they did not mince words about our connection to the Land and all that follows from that principle, even the governments of the world would listen and respect us. I would even dare think that if the Rabbis of Israel spoke with the conviction that this is our land and we are not giving it away--even Arabs would begin to see reality in a different light and who knows perhaps even have a change in their thinking.

Bekavod rav,

Rabbi Tokayer the Rav of Kingsway Jewish Center spoke last night at a meeting of the Zionism Museum and Educational Center. He said there are similarities between the Secular Zionist and the Chareidim.  The very Secular Zionist wants Israel to be a State for Jews rather than a Jewish State.  Simply a refuge place, a safe haven for Jews.  Uganda would serve equally as well as Israel.  My understanding was that for some Chareidim, Eretz Yisroel is not really necessary, prior to Moshiach, for observing Torah and Mitzvoth and to being a good Jew. Rabbi Tokayer backed this up with proof that the Chareidim don't seem to feel a necessity to acknowledge Yom Yerushalyim at the Asifa in Citifield this coming Sunday on Yom Yerushalyim.  Jews can be holy in America or wherever they happen to be, as long as we stay away from the evils of technology, and watch our eyes and ears with filters etc. Mention of Jerusalem is not necessary.

I remember I was in 7th grade that fateful June 1967  when the 6th Day War broke out.  I distinctly remember our Bais Yaakov coming together and davaning, crying out, with all of our heart and soul for our brethren in Eretz Yisroel as they were being attacked from all fronts at once.  I remember being terrified of the possible scenerios and the threat of another Holocaust chas vechalila hovering over our heads.  I remember the subsequent exuberant Jubilation when news reports of the unbelievable miracles, Nisim and Niflaos and the destruction of the Egyptian airforce within a few hours.  The Euphoria was indescribable as the days went by as we Liberated Yerushalyim. It was Am Yisroel coming together as one, with prayer and longing for the Holiness of Eretz Yisroel and Yerushalyim that brought this miraculous victory.  It was not the IDF.

This coming Sunday in Citifield the Gedoilim have done what many considered to be an unbelievable accomplishment. A gevaldig assembly of Jews who long for Holiness and Sanctity.

Esteemed Rabbanim,  Yerushalyim in mentioned over 700 times in Tanach. Technology can bring one closer to holiness.  Technology is only a tool. Technology can also wreak havoc and the dangers are very real and destructive.  But when we talk about Sanctity and Holiness how can we not mention Yerushalyim???? Especially on the anniversary of perhaps the greatest Nas Galui, open miracle, of our Generation?

One thing is clear.  Actualization of Kedusha is only fully realized when we have Yerushalayim!  Can we make believe that Yerushalyim, Makom HaMikdash, is not a factor in creating kedusha in our midst?  There was one sect that went that route and went off the Derech.  I am not making a comparison chas vechalila but merely alerting us to possible danger if we continue in this route to the fullest.

The Essenes

The Qumran sect's origins are postulated by some scholars to be in the communities of the Hasidim, the pious anti-Hellenistic circles formed in the early daysof the Maccabees. The Hasidim may have been the precursors of the Essenes, who were concerned about growing Hellenization and strove to abide by the Torah. They abandoned Jerusalem in protest of the way the Temple was being run and attempted to create their own Jerusalem in the desert reaching for the very highest levels of holiness.

But that is not Torah.  There are so many Mitzvoth that can only be  observed where the Torah clearly says BeMakom Asher Yivchar Hashem, in The Place that G-d Chooses and that is Makom HaMikdash, Temple Mount, in Yerushalyim.  The whole concept of "Vehaya Machanecha Kadosh", having a H-ly Camp, is literally referring to the sanctity of a military camp, a h-ly army which is needed to safeguard the people in the Land of Israel. Indirectly we can infer that this relates to technology as well. But the simple Pshat, the simple meaning of these words is referring to soldiers who are fighting a Milchemet Mitzva to protect the Land of Israel.

Horaat Shaah.  Please review the events of this week and hopefully you too will come to the conclusion that this Asifa can be the opportunity to create a tremendous Kiddush Hashem in the eyes of the world bringing desperately needed sparks of holiness into the lives of all human beings and G-d's creations and not only the tens of thousands attending this historic gathering.

Many attending this gathering will be Satmar Chassidim.  Many argue that politically the organizers will never agree to make a statement regarding Yerushalyim and the Jewish Entitlement to all of Eretz Yisroel since it will bring divisiveness into our camp.   Let me suggest that this need not be the case.  I lived in Kiryat Arba in the 80s and my Satmar Aunt and Uncle greeted me each week as their guest with love and respect that I can only strive to emulate.  I was invited to an elementary school Satmar play in Beis Ruchel in Geula or possibly Meah Shearim and the love and pride for Yerushalyim and the longing of pure and untainted unadulterated holiness for Yerushalyim Ir HaKodesh among these young girls was palpable, unequal to any other school class production I ever observed.  Surely this Kedusha can not be replicated in Monroe or even Williamsburg.   It is a product of Yerushalyim Ir HaKodesh,Jerusalem our H-ly City

Surely the vast majority of those attending this Asifa go to the Kotel. This includes many Satmar as well.  How can we not mention this historic liberation of Har Habayit in 1967 after 2,000 years????

Please take a few minutes of your precious time to read what was in the News this past week: May Hashem give us understanding and wisdom to act according to His wishes. May we be Zocheh to undo the terrible Chillul Hashem of our enemies and replace it with a historic Kiddush Hashem. "Yiyu leratzon imrei fi… – May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable before you, G-d, my Rock and Redeemer"

Abbas Accuses Israel of 'Ethnic Cleansing' in Jerusalem

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas uses a 'Nakba Day' speech to accuse Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas used a 'Nakba Day' speech on Tuesday to accuse Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem.

Nakba Day, or the day of catastrophe, is what the Arabs call the English date of May 15, when the State of Israel was re-established with a declaration of independence in 1948.

"For decades, Israel has been building settlements in Jerusalem and around it," Abbas said in a televised speech, according to a report on Israel's Channel 2 News. "This is done while there is a massive destruction of houses in the city and their original inhabitants are being uprooted on a daily basis."

Abbas also claimed that Israel intentionally harms the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, saying, "The Al-Aqsa Mosque is being targeted by the occupation and together with the extremists has become the main target. They are trying to make Muslims and Christians flee the city by imposing heavy taxes, a policy which can only be called ethnic cleansing."

The PA Chairman also said that "the continued Israeli occupation of Jerusalem is the main factor which fans the tension and wars in the region and the world," and vowed to "turn every grain and stone to put a complete stop to the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem - the capital of Palestine. As long as the occupation continues there will be no peace."

He also clarified that "no peace agreement with Israel will be signed without it recognizing an independent Palestinian state whose capital is Jerusalem. Until then, the Israelis will not be able to live peacefully, but will continue to deal with the consequences of their existence in the heart of a hostile environment."

Abbas warned that if what he said in his speech does not occur exactly the way he noted, "this will lead to the inevitable formation of a bi-national state. Such an alternative is unacceptable to the Israelis, and we are not interested in it either."

His comments came one day after Israel signed an agreement with PA prisoners to end their hunger strike, which has been gaining international sympathy.

The Prime Minister's Office said on Monday that the deal that ended the hunger strike was a goodwill gesture to Abbas.

Part of the deal was the transfer of 100 bodies of PA Arab terrorists currently buried in Israel. The Netanyahu administration instructed security officials to prepare to transfer the bodies to the PA in another apparent gesture of conciliation to Abbas.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, at least four Israeli security personnel were hurt in Nakba Day clashes with PA Arabs in Judea and Samaria.

Hundreds of PA residents threw stones and firebombs outside the Ofer Prison adjacent to the Beitunya crossing. The IDF and Israel Police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and other crowd dispersal means.

Nakba of the Holy Temple

Op-ed: Comparing Nakba to Temple's destruction represents a new level of Arab obscenity
Chaim Richman

This week, Israeli-Arab Knesset Member Taleb El-Sana had told a mob of "Nakba day" protesters in the town of Umm El Fahm that "As far as the Palestinians are concerned, the Nakba is equivalent to the destruction of the First and Second Temples." El-Sana, one of the primary tacticians in the pathetic game of de-legitimizing Israel, has outdone himself. This comparison represents a new level of obscenity, and the lewdest and most ribald obeisance before the golden calf of moral equivalency.

The Holy Temple of Jerusalem represents a universal vision of harmony, peace and unity which transcends Israel's personal identity. The first 40 of years of King Solomon's Temple witnessed the only period in human history during which no war took place anywhere on the globe. Israel's descent into idolatry torpedoed that idyllic period, but the mandate of each of Israel's prophets was to keep our nation and all mankind focused on the optimistic promise of the future.

Full Story
In the words of Isaiah: "It will happen in the end of days: The mountain of the Temple of the Lord will be firmly established as the head of the mountains, and it will be exalted above the hills, and all the nations will stream to it. Many peoples will go and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Temple of the God of Jacob, and He will teach us of His ways and we will walk in His paths. For from Zion shall go forth Torah and the word of G-d from Jerusalem. He will judge among the nations and will settle the arguments of many peoples? They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation will not lift sword against nation and they will no longer study warfare."

This is the vision of the Holy Temple; a time marked by spiritual illumination and the cessation of war, a time, unparalleled in history, when violence in any form will cease to exist. Indeed, Haggai the prophet declares the Holy Temple as the secret of the elusive peace that Israel so fervently seeks: "And in this place I will grant peace, the word of the Lord of Hosts."

In their prophecies concerning the Holy Temple, all Jews like Isaiah and Haggai were saying was give peace a chance. "For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations," declares Isaiah. This is a far cry from the Palestinian "catastrophe," which commemorates the anniversary of - which catastrophe? - the catastrophe of their having listened to the Arab leaders who, planning the genocide of the newly declared state of Israel called upon their people to abandon their homes while they make short shrift of the Jews.

That didn't happen. Instead, like the vision of the future Holy Temple, the State of Israel became a beacon of hope, equality, and advancement for all mankind?a foreshadowing, a taste of the future world.

The Holy Temple isn't about the Jewish people. It is about all mankind united, and living a life of purpose, direction, joy and prosperity. Indeed, the sages of Israel teach that "Had the nations of the world only known how much they benefited from the Holy Temple, they would not have destroyed it; they would have surrounded it with fortresses to protect it" (Bamidbar Rabba 1,3).

Sinister intent

In contrast, the "Nakba" commemorates the loss of a homeland which the Palestinians never possessed. The Land of Israel, however, was the national homeland of the Jewish people before anyone ever dreamed of inventing the Palestinian people. The connection between Israel and her land was severed when the Holy Temple was destroyed, and a 2,000 year exile began. That's the real catastrophe.

Comparing "Nakba Day" to the destruction of the Holy Temple is the brainchild of a mindset which is beyond mere manipulation and cynicism?but like the original Arab leaders responsible for their "catastrophe," it reveals a deeper, more sinister layer of intent, born of a culture that idealizes not the peaceful vision of Israel's prophets, but total intolerance and the brutal oppression of others.

El Sana and his associates can't seem to make up their minds. On the one hand they constantly decry the "Judaization" of Jerusalem, denying that there ever was a Holy Temple or any Jewish connection to the city that was never a capital for any people on the face of the earth other than the Jews; the city mentioned in the Bible over 700 times, and not one time in the Koran. But now, as it suits them, they compare their self-inflicted loss of that which they never possessed with the destruction of that which they deny ever existed.

So according to MK El Sana, it turns out that there really was a Holy Temple? That means that there really was a Jewish Jerusalem 2,000 + years ago. That means that there really is a historical, religious, national, moral, and ethical raison d'?tre for Israel to reclaim Jerusalem and re-Judaize it. This is great news, and just in time to celebrate Jerusalem Day this Sunday, May 20th, the 45th anniversary of the liberation of Jerusalem and its unification by the forces of the IDF.

Let us celebrate Jerusalem Day in the spirit of the prophet Ezekial, to be delivered personally to MK El Sana:

"I will seal a covenant of peace with them; it will be an eternal covenant with them, and I will place My sanctuary among them forever?I will be a G-d to them and they will be a people to Me?Then the nations will know that I am G-d who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary will be among them forever."
