HAPPY TU B'SHVAT: New Year for Trees in Israel (Tuesday night and Wednesday)

 

For all of us lucky enough and zocheh to be in Eretz YIsroel, on Erev Rosh Chodesh Adar, Wed. Feb. 18th, Bonnie (Bracha) Linder (originally from Baltimore) our friend, who now lives in Kiryat Arba, Israel, is planning to run a trip to the beautiful  Kibbutz Ein Gedi botanical gardens located in the Judean desert overlooking the Dead Sea.  Please fwd to anyone you think might be interested.

TIME:   8:30 A. M. - 4:30 P.M.

Leaving from Tzomet Gush Etzion with pickup at Binyanei HaUma (additional stops as needed)

One of the stages of the Geula, the redemption, is the in-gathering of the exiled Jews who are dispersed among the nations. The Gemara also mentions that one of the clearest signs of the Geula is that the land of Israel will give forth her fruits plentifully.

We're planning a trip to the Botanical Gardens in Kibbutz Ein Gedi. The staff there have devoted their lives to making the desert bloom and reintroducing many plants that were once indigenous to Eretz Yisrael. Among these plants are a number of ingredients in the Ketoret (the incense offering in Beit HaMikdash).

* On the Road: Ketoret presentation with essential oils of the various elements of the Ketoret by Bonnie Linder.
* Upon arrival, the "Rabbi" of the Kibbutz, Mani Gal, will give us a tour of the gardens with an emphasis on the elements of the Ketoret.

* Tour of the remains of the ancient synagogue of Ein Gedi, including a mosaic floor. 
* Picnic lunch

* Craft workshop with Yaeli Gal and Mani Gal using palm fronds.

Yaeli will present the saga of the reintroduction of dates to Eretz Yisrael and then she'll instruct us in the use of the "scraps" from the palm tree for cute little gifts that could be used to decorate Mishloah Manot.

Please convey to Senator Schumer our deep, deep disappointment in his decision to capitulate to President Obama's pressure.   We've learned that Senator Schumer and his Democratic colleagues have sent a letter to Obama saying that they won't support the passage of the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act until after March 24 -- the date when a political framework for a final deal is to be done.   

 

It has already been established that the terms under negotiation for this framework will allow Iran to become a nuclear threshold state.   Waiting until after March 24th is too late.  Extensions have been going on since 2003.   They can no longer be tolerated.   Senator Schumer knows that it is only because of sanctions that Iran has not achieved its goal by now.  Sanctions deprive Iran of the resources and the technology needed to speed up their program.

 

We are depending on Senator Schumer to stand by the promises he made at the AIPAC conference this past March:    

 

"The only way — the only way that Iran will voluntarily give up nuclear weapons is if they know that tougher and tougher sanctions will be put in place until they do.   The United States must be prepared to use all -- all available tools to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear weapon state because it is vital to Israel's security but even more importantly because it is vital to America's own security.....I can assure you that Congress will make sure that any final agreement reached with Iran must accomplish the goal of permanently---permanently---preventing Iran from ever having nuclear weapons."

In November, Senator Schumer stressed that "the success of negotiations can only be defined as an agreement that removes the threat of a world with a nuclear Iran." 

 

Should Senator Schumer's constituents perceive that he and his fellow Democrats are putting their party before their country's national security interests, there will surely be repercussions for the Democratic Party in the 2016 presidential election.

I just called Senator Schumer's office and the phone was answered.  I was able to leave a very detailed message.   Unfortunately, I started to cry (but, maybe that's a good thing).    He needs to hear from us now!  Every call is considered as 50 individual voters!!!    His number is 202-224-6542.
