Operation AIT LAASOT - Women in Green - stopping Land Grab in Judea and Samaria, HONEINIi - Defending Jewish Rights of Self Defense

bs"d

Chashuva Rabbonim, Media and Friends who Love Eretz Yisroel, amv"sh

Please acknowledge, promote organizations, communities and individuals who ACT in ways that build up the Land of Israel and prevent further terror attacks against our people in Judea and Samaria and the rest of Israel.  These honored organizations include Women in Green, Honenu, Havat Gilat  , the Yishuv of Itamar  and MattotArim and many others as well.

Sent today by Women In Green:

OUTRAGEOUS ACTION in Sussya

Women for Israel's Tomorrow (Women in Green) and Garin Netzer protest strongly against the outrageous action performed this morning by the Civil Administration in Sussya when they destroyed Moishele Deutsh's fields and  uprooted 3300  five year old trees.

The State is attacking its loving sons.

Anyone who searches the internet and reads about the different anti-Israeli organizations, like JAI, who help the Arabs , understands that a war on the land is being waged by the Arabs-- a tree intifada. The Arabs understand that the battle will be won on the land and not on meaningless papers of "peace".

We call upon the Civil Administration to return to its original purpose: safeguarding the land of Israel and preventing the Arabs from taking over.

Yehudit Katsover 0507161818  Nadia Matar 0505500834

From Honenu:

If you killed in self defense, would you be afraid to call the police

You would if you lived in Israel and you were a Jew and your attacker was an Arab.

At the end of January, a Jew walking in the Har Bracha region was attacked. Two Arabs from the village of Arak Burin appear in a video clip distributed by the IDF spokesman, where they can be seen threatening the Jew with rocks in their hands. Since he had no alternative, and since his life was clearly in danger, the victim fired his pistol and killed one of the attackers. See the incident caught on video.

Shortly thereafter, Judea and Samaria Division detectives began arresting and detaining residents of Samaria on suspicion of committing the act. The sole prima facie evidence connecting them to the incident is the type of weapon that they are licensed to hold, a pistol made by Glock. It need hardly be said that numerous such weapons have been licensed throughout the country.

In all cases the arrestees were released, but the Police confiscated their weapons for examination. It should be noted that these arrests occur predawn in their homes as if they were escaped criminals. The latest occurring in Itamar to the son of former IDF Chief Rabbi Avichai Ronsky, whose family was terrified thinking that the police were terrorists attempting to again murder in that community.

Even though the Police declared that this was a case of self defense the person who fired decided not to inform the Police of the incident. One could correctly assume that this is due to the arbitrary conduct of the Police and the courts in such cases. Many Jews who have been attacked are arrested and forced to remain in detention for long periods of time.

The person who fired apparently waited to hear of the arrest and imprisonment of the attackers. When no one was arrested he realized that the Police was not interested in true justice.

Advocate Adi Keidar from Honenu said of the arrest: "The conduct of the police is very strange. The Police announced that this was clearly a case of permitted use of a weapon for self defense. It is therefore unclear why the Police decided to investigate the Jews and once again ignore the criminal acts of the Arabs."

Honenu's legal defense team works non stop to ensure true justice.
There were over 470 new cases in the last 6 months.
This Passover holiday donate generously to provide FREEDOM for others.
Make Israel a better place.

P.S. Shalom Pollack, our representative, will be in the NY area from May 10 – 31 on a speaking tour. Please contact us if you can help with setting up speaking engagements or wish to be notified of his schedule.

Chashuva Askanim,

Please engage in some personal accounting. Have you sought out these courageous Jews and Organizations knowing that enemies are surrounding them or have you turned them away from your door when they approached you?  Perhaps you have decided that there is nothing they or you can personally do that will make any difference in Yehuda and the Shomron.  Have you just given up?

The civil rights of the residents of Yehuda and Shomron are hefker and so is their private property and belongings.  Why have we left them to fight for their homes and their security on their own.  Do we not realize that Judea and Samaria is the first stop, of terror,  on the way to us chas vechalila?

The State of Israel is working against them as per pressures of the Obama Administration.  Our American tax money is going in hundreds of millions, perhaps billions to support the PA and other terror fronts.

Will these G-d fearing Jews not be featured in your papers or on the air or in your talks unless there is some horrific terror attack? What will it take to make their voices heard?

A personal letter to you from Robin (Faige Rayzel)

Today is 2 Nissan my Hebrew Birthday.  It is my 55th Birthday, 5 and 5 which reminds me of the 10 Luchot Habrit.  To help me celebrate this momentous Birthday, I am asking you to please give me a gift that I will treasure more than anything else in the world.

Please do something for Yehuda and the Shomron.  Make it prominent.  (You can print that it is in honor of faigerayzel's 55th Birthday if you want but that's not important.) What is important is to put Judea and Samaria and  Jewish Rights to Eretz Yisroel literally on the map.  Emphasize our Right to Defend Ourselves on Eretz HaKodesh, Our H-ly soil.  State this  proudly  on your headline, your front pages, in your opening remarks, and/or in your Drasha in shul.

 Arab attacks do not happen in a vacuum.

 Will what you just read sent by Women in Green and Honenu get printed in mainstream Jewish Media or get prominent space or  air time?

 Or will your space and time and promotion be  designated to organizations and individuals who excel at  memorializing  Jewish victims of Arab Terror and are expert about Egypt, Libya and Iran.  These voices are passive when the warning lights are on and they unfortunately do not sound the alarm for preventive measures to save Jewish Lives in Judea and Samaria and by domino effect save lives in the entire Israel and the world.

The Gov't of the State of Israel is turning a blind eye to Arab vandalism and Arab aggression and provocation.  Worse, it is
prosecuting those Jewish settlers  that have been attacked  and turn the tables on them so that they are forced at great expense to defend their actions as if they were criminal.

Isn't it  a heavenly act of  justice that Goldstone a Jew,  is behind a report of the UN criminalizing the State of  Israel for acting in Self Defense.  Goldstone seemed almost on the verge of retracting this libelous Goldstone report and then didn't.  Perhaps what just  happened in Sussia as reported by Yehudit Katzover and Nadia Matar of Women in Green or what was reported by Honenu triggered something in Goldstone's brain to retract  only halfheartedly.  Perhaps in Heavenly Court, The State of Israel needs to be a lot more deserving  in order to obtain a full retraction from Goldstone. After all aren't they guilty of acting similarly, accusing and treating the Jewish settlers in Judea and Samaria, the Galil and the Negev who act in Self Defense as criminals?

The Right of Self Defense and the Freedom to Bear Arms is embedded in the  Bill of Rights of the American Constitution.

The underlying basis for these Bill of Rights is that we are not trespassers or threatening the real owners and we have full rights to be on the Land.

Arabs distort truth and create lies to fabricate the idea that  Arabs are victims of the Israeli "Occupation". They claim that we stole the Land from them.   This legitimizes their "armed struggle" against Jews and makes light of  the heinous crimes  of their  "armed struggle" in the leftist Global Media.

Therefore, to counter this identity theft by the Arabs, and land theft by Arabs, literally and in principle,  Israel must justify their rights to settle Judea and Samaria based on our Biblical and Historical Rights.

After all, if we are "Occupiers" as Obama and the Global Community proclaim, then the armed struggle of the "Palestinian People" is justified and slaughtering innocent babies in their sleep is not portrayed as an act of terror.

May we all be zocheh to be part of the Return of Am Yisroel to Eretz Yisroel and bring Moshiach Tzidkeinu Bimheira Beyameinu Amein so that we will be able to serve Hashem in the Beit Hamikdash and throughout the world, as per His desire and liking...

Sincerely,

Robin Ticker

Operation AIT LAASOT- Twinning with Yehuda andShomron Partnering with Judea and Samaria

bs"d

Dear Rabbonim, Media, Organizations and individuals who are Friends of Eretz Yisroel Hashleima, amv"sh

Will we merely memorialize the dead, the barbaric murders, the massacres?

Or WILL WE ACT so that WE WON'T HAVE TO MEMORIALIZE
the dead the barbarity and the massacres?

Introducing Operation AIT LAASOT.   We are individuals (initiators, Robin Ticker and Shmuel Koenig) who spend our days and nights doing what we can to wake up, inspire, cajole and plead and cry for our precious brothers and sisters,  the Nation of Israel to be actively part of Yishuv Haaretz.  Here in Brooklyn, the murders touched a sensitive bone.  But is the pain acute enough to turn sentiment into action?  How much pain does it require Chas VeChalila. We do not want to find out!

We can preempt and prevent what happened in Itamar.  The tragedies COULD have been prevented by us had we gotten involved sooner and not supported the "peace initiatives" by expressing outrage when property is stolen or vandalized by Arabs or victims of Arab aggression are turned into the aggressors and arrested rather catching the perpetrators and prosecuting them.  The Arabs have become brazen as to attack babies and  children on a Friday night without fear of reprisal.  Quite the opposite, they look forward to the reward they will receive from those that support terror for these heinous acts. To Build and expand is the answer.

We can stop future tragedies chas vechalila BUT NOT MERELY BY MEMORIALIZING.

Operation AIT LAASOT is a campaign to encourage every Jew to partner in whatever capacity with building Judea and Samaria.  By your efforts you are an automatic member of AIT LAASOT.  WE choose the Best and most useful way to both Memorialize and Prevent future tragedies.

We want shuls to partner with shuls, schools with schools, classes with classes, families with families, or a shul with a family or a group of people with a business, or a business with a business.  The point is to be Mezakeh the Rabbim, make ALL Jews worthy of Yishuv  Eretz Yisroel. Let us partner en masse with the pioneers, brave, courageous and sacrificing families and individuals that already live and invested their whole lives in Yishuv Haaretz based on Torah and Mitzvoth in Judea and Samaria and all of Eretz Yisroel.

Why specifically Judea and Samaria?  Because they are the ones targeted by all the Nations of the World including the United States.  When there is a Mitzva that has universal opposition, that is davka the Mitzva that we must strengthen.  Because of Areivus, we as a Nation must be worthy of the Land of Israel. When only a minority of Am Yisroel is worthy, collectively as a Nation we are short on merit. Only when the majority is worthy will we merit to overcome our enemies and win the struggle for Eretz Yisroel.  If we somehow show HaKadosh Baruch Hu that we in Chutz LeAretz care, that we desire the Land, that our Tefillot and dreams are meaningful and not empty words, surely we are confident that Hashem will respond positively.

We have been told by some caring Jews, we must wait for Moshiach.  Surely, Moshiach needs a Kli, some vessel in which to appear.  Otherwise when Moshiach knocks on our door telling us to return to Eretz Yisroel we might turn him away saying that we are waiting for Moshiach to come.  Will we recognize Moshiach when he stares us in the face?

Our Hishtadlus is the vessel needed by Moshiach  to come and operate.

For starters let us recommend two possibilities for our hishtadlus, our partnering.  Of course, there are many opportunities in Judea and Samaria and we will be more than happy to assist you to find the venue that touches your heart and soul.  We are connected to many organizations and Yeshivoth and businesses that help the Yesha communities.

1. URGENT! Chavat Gilad.  A privately owned farm in the Shomron currently without electricity housing 27 families and Yeshiva students.  Right before the Itamar massacre following a campaign to raise funds for fuel for their generator, they were attacked 4:30 am by Israeli police with plastic bullets for the crime of "illegal" building.  The police demolished a home and some structures.

This community relies on an electric generator because the Gov't of Israel refuses to provide the infrastructure.  (Please note that the gov't however has no problem with supplying power to our enemies in Gaza who attack Sderot, Ashdod and Beer Sheva).

Chavat Gilad is  "illegal" as per the demands of the International Community who do not have our best interest at heart.

Their electric generator is extremely expensive to run and the community runs out of funds for fuel.

I am looking for 20 people that would be willing to contribute $100 each to ease the current crises and get them back electricity.  So far I have several contributors. As a long term solution we want to raise money for funding Wind Turbines so that they will not have to rely on contributions of others for their electricity but will have a clean alternative affordable energy source that will be a model for others as well. Our goal is to be Komimyut LeArtzeinu.

You can send them money directly through paypal or by check .  (it would give us chizuk if you email us the details of your contribution).   In Brooklyn, if there are any questions feel free to call 718-510-2364 or  718-375-7056.  Encourage pooling with others.  If you can think of a person that would like to contribute, spread the word.

Donations for Chavat Gilad can be made online via paypal at this link. Then share the Nachas of your contribution with others.

2. TIMELY suggestion: This week's Parshat Shemini has references to the Cohen Gadol Itamar the son of Aharon HaKohen. The community Itamar in the Shomron is named after him. I believe the Kever of Itamar is located in this location.

Itamar of the Shomron, the place of the recent brutal massacre of the Fogel family hy"d.  The Mayor of Itamar Moshe Goldsmith and his wonderful wife Leah are in New York.  They will be in Brooklyn, speaking in the Kingsway Jewish Center 2810 Nostrand Ave. on Sunday April 3rd at 8:pm Beezrat Hashem.   Besides, serious security needs the Yishuv Itamar wants to complete the construction of a beautiful Beit Knesset in time of the first Yahrzeit of the Fogel family hy"d.  Rabbi Goldsmith can fill  you in. Re: Chavat Gilad : Tell Netanyahu that the Torah is the only true reality and his "reality" translates into sure destruction for not only Israel but for humanity

bs"d

Netanyahu's response  as reported in Israel National News:

Netanyahu Says Nationalists 'Do Not Live in This World'

Dear Knesset Members, Rabbanim and my List, amv"sh

The Covenant carries with it either a Blessing or a Curse. Both are true realities. Netanyahu is choosing to side with the curse reality.

"Lo bashamayim hi."
  The solution of Torah  is not out there in the heavens or across the sea; it is rather "very near to you, in your mouth and your heart...." [2] Lo Bashamayim hi, our commandments are not made for heaven but within our reach TO DO IT

As we say in Psukei D'Zimra, from Chronicles Aleph Chapter 16: "Zichru LeOlam Briso.. ""Remember forever His Covenant, the Word He commanded for a thousand generations, that He made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac, the He established it for a statute for Jacob , for Israel as an everlasting Covenant, for you I shall give the Land of Canaan the lot of your inheritance.

In Reward for Abraham's faithfulness, G-d made a Covenant with him. However, if we are not faithful to G-d and wish to silence G-d's faithful (equivalent to prophets of days gone by) than it is no surprise that the  reality is subservience and of being delivered to the hands of people of the Lands. The reality will be distress and slavery. It is truly remarkable that the words of our Torah and Prophets are so real and true after many thousands of years.

In Nechemia Chapter 9:

verses 6-8
6. You alone are the Lord; You made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens and all their host, the earth and all that is upon it, the seas and all that is in them, and You give life to them all, and the heavenly host bow down before You.   ו.
7. You are the Lord God, Who chose Abram, took him out of Ur of the Chaldees and made his name Abraham.   ז.
8. And You found his heart faithful before You, and You made the covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give to his seed, and You kept Your words, for You are righteous....(underline my emphasis)

25. And they captured fortified cities and fat soil, and they inherited houses full of all good, hewn cisterns, vineyards, and olive trees, and fruit trees in abundance, and they ate and were sated, and they became fat, and they enjoyed pleasures with Your great goodness.   כה.
26. And they disobeyed and rebelled against You, and they cast Your Law behind their backs, and they slew Your prophets who warned them, to bring them back to You, and they committed great provocations.   כו.
27. And You delivered them into the hands of their adversaries who distressed them, and at the time of their distress they cried out to You, and You heard from heaven, and according to Your abundant mercies, you gave them saviors, who saved them from the hands of their adversaries.   כז.
28. But when they had rest, they would revert to do evil before You, and You left them in the hands of their enemies, and they ruled over them, and they returned and cried out to You, and from heaven You heard and rescued them according to Your mercy many times.   כח.
29. And You warned them-to bring them back to Your Law, but they behaved wickedly and did not heed Your commandments, and they sinned against Your ordinances, which man should do and live with them, and they presented a stubborn shoulder, and they stiffened their necks and did not hearken.   כט.
30. But You extended [mercy] upon them for many years, and You warned them with Your spirit by the hand of Your prophets, but they did not incline their ears, and You delivered them into the hands of the peoples of the lands.   ל.
31. But with Your abundant mercies You did not wreak destruction upon them, and You did not forsake them, for You are a gracious and merciful God.   לא.
32. And now, our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God, Who keeps the covenant and the loving- kindness, do not belittle all the travail that has befallen us, our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our forefathers, and all Your people from the days of the kings of Assyria until this day.   לב.
33. And You are just with all that has come upon us, for You have dealt truly and we have dealt wickedly.   לג.
34. And our kings, our princes, our priests, and our forefathers did not keep Your Law and did not hearken to Your commandments and to Your warnings, which You warned them.   לד.
35. And they, in their kingdom and with Your abundant goodness, which You gave them, and in the wide and fat land that You placed before them, they did not serve You, and they did not repent of their evil deeds.

  לה.
36. Behold, today we are slaves, and the land that You gave our forefathers to eat its fruit and its goodness-behold we are slaves upon it.   לו.
37. And it lavishes its produce upon the kings whom You have appointed over us because of our sins, and they rule over our bodies and over our cattle as they wish, and we are in great distress.

Nechemia Chapter 11...

29. And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinites, and all who separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all who know enough to understand.   כט.
30. They held with their brethren, their noblemen, and entered the curse and the oath to follow the Law of God, (underline my emphasis) which was given through Moses, the servant of God, and to keep and perform all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and His ordinances and His statutes.   ל.
31. And that we shall not give our daughters to the peoples of the land, and we shall not take their daughters for our sons.   לא.
32. And as for the peoples of the land who bring merchandise and all grains on the Sabbath day to sell-we shall not purchase from them on the Sabbath or on holy days, and we shall abandon [the land] during the seventh year [and] the loan given by every hand.   לב.
33. And we set upon ourselves the commandments to give a third of a shekel a year for the service of the Temple of our God.   לג.
34. For the bread of the arrangement and the daily meal offering and for the daily burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the New Moons, the appointed seasons, and for the holy offerings and for the sin offerings to atone for Israel, and all the work of the Temple of our God.   לד.
35. And we cast lots for the wood offering, the priests, the Levites, and the people, to bring to the Temple of our God, to the House of our forefathers at set times, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God as is written in the Torah.   לה.
36. And to bring the first-fruits of our soil and the first of every fruit of every tree, year by year, to the Temple of the Lord.   לו.
37. And the firstborn of our sons and of our animals, as is written in the Torah, and the firstborn of our cattle and our flocks to bring to the Temple of our God, to the priests who minister in the Temple of our God.   לז.
38. And the first of our dough and our heave offerings and the fruit of every tree, wine, and oil, we shall bring to the priests, to the chambers of the Temple of our God, and the tithe of our soil to the Levites, and they, the Levites, who receive tithes in all the cities of our work.   לח.
39. And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites at the Levites' tithing and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithe to the Temple of our God, to the chambers, to the storehouse.   לט.
40. For the Children of Israel and the children of the Levites shall bring the heave-offering of corn, wine, and oil, to the chambers where the Temple vessels and the ministering priests are, and the gatekeepers, and the singers, and we will not forsake the Temple of our God."

Please read Helen Freedman's letter and take it to heart.

Dear Members of the Knesset,

       My Chairman, Herbert Zweibon, z"l, is no longer with us to personally protest against the horrific display of force against innocent Israeli citizens in Chavat Gilad, so I am picking up the mantle for him.

       Americans for a Safe Israel visited Chavat Gilad many times over the years, with our most recent visit on the November 2010 AFSI Chizuk mission to Israel. With great pride, the residents showed us their beautiful homes and furnishings, much of which had been built and created by the owners themselves.

       We were informed then that the Israeli government had NEVER made available to these Jewish residents, the basic needs of water and electricity. It was explained to us that water was trucked in from Kedumim and that generators provided the electricity. We were appalled by the thought that Hamas in Gaza is supplied with these essential items by Israel, but the Jewish government of Israel sees fit to deprive its fellow Jews of the same necessities. This defies understanding.

       We were recently informed of the need to purchase fuel for the generators because the community was facing the reality of a cold and dark Shabbat. Some good people came to the rescue for the short term. We were working on the long term solution when we received news of the brutal attack on the community.

       The hundreds of police and special forces who descended on Chavat Gilad, a community of 28 families, 20 singles, and 30 small children at 4:30 AM, armed with guns and shooting dangerous rubber and plastic bullets, are guilty of crimes against humanity. Those who issued the commands for such action of wanton destruction and cruelty should be tried for the same crimes. The guilt goes to the very top – to PM Netanyahu and Ehud Barak. The shame and disgrace of what has occurred cannot be erased.

       We pray that every Minister in the government will assume the obligation to demand justice in this case and to do everything in his/her power to prevent such nightmares from being repeated.

Recommendation
To Whom It May Concern:
Re:  Our Praiseworthy Heroes, the Residents of Chavat Gilad

I hereby request that you highly recommend  pioneers in the Shomron , the residents of Chavat Gilad of the Shomron.  These residents are building Eretz Yisroel with their 10 fingers, literally!  To our great disappointment, they are not receiving any help or support from the establishment.  And sometimes ----- the opposite. (and for the wise the rest is implicit)

The residents cope with difficult daily challenges.  They are still not connected to electricity or to the national water supply. In this location, in the winter time they need heat.  This is even more so when we are talking about young couples blessed with little babies.  In spite of the obstacles piled along their path, these residents are holding on to this place with their fingernails.

There is agriculture, working and building of the Land. Young couples, already married are investing their wedding money, (
at risk of being demolished by the gov't robin)  to build their homes.
In all honesty, we are talking about true pioneers without exaggeration.

And now, the water is up to their necks.  There is not enough fuel to supply heat and lighting.  There is real distress because of the weather conditions on the farm.

Therefore, I am calling for Hashem's help for these heroes.  "Et Achai Anochi Mevakesh", my brothers I am seeking, to come to pioneer for our brethren in Israel who are fulfilling, with their physical beings, they, their wives and their children, the Mitzva of Yeshuv Haaretz with all 248 of their limbs.  And, in this way,  we will partner with them, to some extent,  with the building of our beloved Land.

With Blessings,

HaRav Yitzchok Halevi
The Rav of Karnei Shomron

Rabbanim  Chashuvim shllita,

Isn't this a matter of Pekuach Nefesh not only for Judea and Samaria,but also for population centers within shooting range and  by extension all of Israel, all of world Jewry and humanity?

Isn't this a battle between the forces of evil, which is the unity of  Fatah and Hamas vs. Torah and Jewish Claim for Yehuda and  Shomron and for all of Eretz Yisroel within the Torah designated delineated boundar?  Surely this is what the first Rashi of Breishit is all about.

Now a few more words about the delegitimization going on in the UN.

This past Friday, February 18, 2011the UN Security Council voted 13 to 14 against Jewish Settlement in Judea and Samaria.  The 14th vote, a  United States veto,  was by no means pro Jewish Settlement and even so a day of rage is scheduled in Judea and Samaria against this US Veto.  We can not rely on the US as a solid friend.

As the courageous young mother  Ilana Shimon resident  of Gilad Farm Outpost stated with conviction "There is no freeze...We are building as usual.  Continuing to expand...  We believe in building and continuing to act. Not only to build homes but to build a community."  Arabs tried to burn down the Gilad Farm successfully destroying one home.  The community refrained from reprisal. As Ilana put it, "the answer, the revenge is construction.  To build one home and another.  That is the best and correct response". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHv8m-9c_Cg&feature=player_embedded

Thank you for caring and for reviewing this material.  Building Gilad Farm Outpost and making sure they have electric power and water is the best response to Arab or US deligitimization.   Please read the latest Arlene Kushner post which brings light on the  "US/Obama's administration recent veto in the UN Security Council to condemn Israel."  It is clear that only our unwavering faith in Hashem's Promise and Covenant with Am Yisroel regarding Israel's rightful settlement in Judea and Samaria and the entire Land of  Israel, will protect and save us.

 Any followup on this matter leading to  funds is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Robin Ticker 718-338-3822

New Post by Arlene Kushner--
February 20, 2011

"What the Hell Is Going On?"

On Friday the US vetoed the resolution that had been advanced in the UN Security Council by Lebanon, on behalf of Palestinian Authority, that would have condemned the Israeli "settlements" as illegal; the other 14 members of the SC voted for this -- which, according to Abbas made his venture a success.

OK.  Good.  Better that it was vetoed.  Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed appreciation to President Obama.  Certain members of Congress, who had called on the president to cast that vote, did the same.

But from me Obama gets no thanks.  He wasn't doing this to support us.  The US government has made it clear that it is opposed in principle to the "settlements."  It's just that it is still committed to getting parties to return to the negotiating table.

As US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, put it, "This draft resolution risks hardening the positions of both sides.  It could encourage the parties to stay out of negotiations, and, if and when they did resume, to return to the Security Council whenever they reach an impasse."

~~~~~~~~~~
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the very best friend we have in Congress, put it most aptly:
"The administration's display of angst and its hesitation to use its veto is a major victory for those extremists elements who relish in demonizing Israel.  And for the administration to go as far as calling the choice to veto regrettable is simply shameful."
Oh, right on, Ileana!
~~~~~~~~~~

What I want to examine is that American "angst" and the fallout that has ensued.

Obama had begun by making an alternative offer to the Palestinian Arabs.  He had his reasons for not wanting to declare the "settlements" illegal in the Security Council, but his alternative proposal contained a good number of items that would have been troublesome: A statement by the Quartet, a statement by the President of the Security Council, an official visit to Judea and Samaria by the Security Council.

~~~~~~~~~~
Definitely not a position that was friendly to us.  And with regard to Obama's relation to Israel, this is what must be kept in mind:
In a time of severe unrest in the area, with Obama professing support for the people in the street who are ostensibly seeking democracy, Israel, the only genuine and stable democracy in the Middle East, is being undercut by America.
~~~~~~~~~~

When the alternative offer was rejected by the PA, with the backing of the PLO, Obama placed a phone call to Abbas, which, I have read, lasted the better part of an hour.  Reportedly, he told Abbas that he had done more for the PA than any other American president. Sounds about right.

But what we're seeing is that even this didn't carry the day with Abbas.  So little is Obama's influence.

~~~~~~~~~~
The PA news agency Sama has additionally carried a report from a senior member of Fatah saying that Secretary of State Clinton threatened to cancel aid to the PA if Abbas didn't withdraw the resolution.
Didn't make a dent with Abbas, either.  He simply said he had to act for the good of his people.
~~~~~~~~~~

What we are seeing, my friends, is a US that has lost all clout, an America that is going, going down.

It's a painful, pathetic sight, with manifold implications and repercussions -- none positive.

But it is hardly unexpected.  Being "nice" does not work with the Arabs.  Remember how Obama called Abbas first after becoming president?

All of it is for naught, if you're not tough. The more you give, the more they expect, and ultimately, the more disappointed they are.

~~~~~~~~~~
Israeli MK Ibrahim Sarsour, a member of the United Arab List, wrote a letter to Abbas yesterday.  It gives us an idea of what the Arabs are thinking:
"After the exposure of lies from the US, we must say frankly to Obama,'You no longer scare us and you can go to hell.' Obama cannot be trusted...The time has come to spit in the face of Americans....
"[The veto] proves for the thousandth time that Obama is worse than his predecessor Bush in his loyalty to Israel, his bias...and in ignoring the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people, land and holy places."
Incredible!  Bush never demanded that settlements be frozen, and Bush, whatever his failings, was certainly more supportive of Israel and tougher with the PA than Obama.  There's the lesson.
~~~~~~~~~~

Nor is this the end of it:

The PA has threatened to reconsider its position on negotiations.  Abbas is saying he may bring a similar resolution to the General Assembly.

While yesterday Palestinian Arabs were calling for a "Day of Rage," to take place next Friday, to express anger at the US for the veto. This was proposed by Tawfik Tirawi, a member of the Fatah Central Committee.

A PA "Day of Rage" against the US.  Imagine...

~~~~~~~~~~
And then, in news just out, we have this further wrinkle:  PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has approached Hamas with a unity deal. Don't know that it's much of a deal, actually.  What he proposes is that the PA continue to rule in Judea and Samaria, with Hamas -- pledged to maintaining a cease fire with Israel -- continuing to rule in Gaza.  The two parties would then work out a way to place both areas under one governing body.
But the devil really is in the details.  Hamas demands for control have been such that there has been no understanding with the PA forthcoming despite multiple efforts towards unity.  Until this were to be worked out, there would be no "unity," no matter what the parties might choose to call it.
~~~~~~~~~~

So far, there has been no comment from Hamas.  And it is far too soon to speculate on the obviously negative impact some unity deal would have on "the peace process."

The PA is constantly doing a dance between the two poles of the US and Hamas.  On this occasion, as I see it, Fayyad is thumbing his nose at the US, by demonstrating intention to waltz towards Hamas.  Likely more gesture than reality.  But we'll see...

~~~~~~~~~~
We'll never hear about it, but could it be that Obama is so furious at the conduct of the PA that he has smoke coming out of his ears?  Or is he thinking about how he can offer more concessions to appease them and bring them around?
Does it dawn on him at all that a party as intransigent as the PA is not going to sit at a negotiating table and make the compromises requisite for peace?  Is he planning to keep on pushing for the impossible?  Or has he silently thrown up his hands in resignation?
~~~~~~~~~~

The only thing that makes sense at all is a tough stance with the PA now -- which, in any event, is what we are least likely to see from Obama.

~~~~~~~~~~
Closer to home, what matters most is that Israel should stand tough:
No making concessions to Obama, to show "gratitude" for his veto.
No backing off on our rights to live and build in Judea and Samaria in order to "help" jumpstart negotiations.
I understand that Netanyahu felt it necessary to thank Obama.  And I even understand that he has resorted to his role-playing: his efforts to show the world how eager Israel is to make peace, while the PA remains a stumbling block.
But did he have to say this: "We seek a solution that will reconcile the Palestinians' legitimate aspirations for statehood with Israel's need for security..."
Ouch!  There is nothing legitimate about Palestinian Arab aspirations.
~~~~~~~~~~

But there is another approach that brings with it the comforting prospect that Israel will stand strong:

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation is considering a bill that would apply Israeli civil law to all communities in Judea and Samaria, where military law now applies.  (This is not annexation.)

It should have been done many years ago, for as matters stand, Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria have all the obligations and responsibilities of citizenship without the full benefit of the civic system. This would make clear that all people who are Israeli citizens are to be treated the same, and would send a powerful message.

Most significantly, the authority to approve, or fail to approve, construction would no longer fall to Defense Minister Ehud Barak -- this would be within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Housing and Construction and would pretty much preclude a freeze on building.

The bill is being sponsored by National Union; the 27 MKs who support it come, as well, from Likud and Yisrael Beitenu.

~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not terribly optimistic that this will pass.  As I understand it, the sponsors of the bill are realistic about its slim chances of succeeding.
But it is an important beginning: putting issues on the table and demonstrating a position of strength.
~~~~~~~~~~

Tomorrow is another day...
