Today's Commentary:  Planned Parenthood Funding -- Hillary Reminds Us Why She Lost -- Liberal Militia Forms

Robin,

Federal funding for Planned Parenthood in a "Republican" spending bill? How is this possible? And, more importantly, what can be done about it?

President Trump offered his own explanation for the various inadequacies of this bill in the form of a Tweet: "The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We...either elect more Republican senators in 2018 or change the rules to 51%. Our country needs a good 'shutdown' in September to fix the mess."

The battle lines over abortion have been drawn sharply, with the Democrats digging in to preserve every possible protection for their holy sacrament of even very late-stage terminations (of life), that they make a government "shutdown" virtually inevitable. Of course, they'll actually welcome that "shutdown" because they can then blame Republicans for not compromising, when they themselves are absolutely unbending. "Shutdowns" –- I use the quotation marks because only about one-fifth of the government actually stops working during one –- are treated to such a hysterical reaction in the media that voters lose confidence in their leadership. Trump is right to remind us that we could actually benefit from one, if it comes to that. Voters need to see this as part of the negotiating process.

Just as "appeasement" isn't the basis for a good foreign policy, it's also not the way to deal with Democrats. While they detest the idea of a wall on our border, they put up one of their own to deal with Republicans. Funding for Planned Parenthood is on their side of that wall, receiving protection at all costs. To borrow a phrase from Ronald Reagan, I'd like to say, "Democrats, tear down that wall!" But they never will unless there are severe political consequences to their rigid stance.

The bill is up for a vote this week, and reconciliation is still possible. If that doesn't happen, keep in mind that technically it's a stopgap that was necessary because Democrats never did pass a budget. The crucial battle –- over what is usually the first budget passed by a new administration –- will take place later in the year. In the meantime, moderate Republicans in both House and Senate need to remember that if they don't lay down the law –- literally –- they will likely face severe political consequences of their own. If that happens, the next budget they pass could be their last for a long time.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee

Hillary Reminds Us Why She Lost

By Mike Huckabee

Hillary Clinton reminded us of why she wasn't elected by arguing that the key to bringing jobs back to America is for the government to help bring better cell phone coverage/broadband Internet to rural areas. Also, more tax money "invested" in the solar power industry, or else China will "eat our lunch in the solar market."

The last Administration that she was a part of lost over half a billion dollars of our money co-signing loans for their cronies at the solar panel company Solyndra, which built itself a palatial headquarters, then promptly went out of business because it failed to foresee dropping silicon prices and couldn't compete with Chinese solar panel companies. And that was just one of many "green energy," crony capitalism money sinks that never paid off. Hillary still has yet to learn the lesson of the Obama economy: if you want to create private sector jobs, the government doesn't need to "partner" with the private sector, it needs to get the heck out of the private sector's way. Government is the economy's referee, it's not the quarterback.

Come to think of it, the Obama Administration not only proved that government shouldn't be trying to pick winners and losers in the marketplace with our money, it also proved that it couldn't even make a lunch that anyone would eat.

Liberal Militia Forms (Yes you read that right)

By Mike Huckabee

Remember Steve Martin's old bit, where he did a joke that only the plumbers in the audience would understand? Well, here's something just for gun owners (I figure that's a much higher percentage of my audience than Steve Martin had plumbers.)

A handful of liberals suddenly discovered the Second Amendment and ran out to buy guns because their own campaign propaganda scared them into thinking Trump was going to take away their rights. Or else it was a PR stunt to try to intimidate pro-Trump rally attendees. After serious gun owners laughed at them, a "liberal militia" in Arizona made the mistake of trying to prove they actually knew how to use their firearms by releasing a video of them on a firing range. All it proves is that the only kind of shooting they understand is shooting their mouths off. They are very lucky that they at least know which end of the gun the bullets come out of. It's hilarious until you remember that these are the people who think they should be making guns laws for the rest of us.

Say, here's an idea: maybe they should join the NRA and avail themselves of some of their excellent gun safety training materials for children.

IN BRIEF to  /  Top / Action Item
Attention CAMERA E-Mail Team:
Tomorrow, May 2, is Yom Ha'azmaut, Israeli Independence Day. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, is set to mark the day with yet another resolution delegitimizing the Jewish state, as well as its history, its holy sites, and its capital.

The draft text of the resolution on which UNESCO is planning a vote tomorrow, titled "Occupied Palestine," states that its aim is the "safeguarding of the cultural heritage of Palestine and the distinctive character of East Jerusalem." It affirms last December's UN Security Council Resolution 2334, a resolution that deemed Judaism's holiest sites in Jerusalem – the Temple Mount, the Mount of Olives, and the Western Wall – part of "Occupied Palestinian Territory." The draft text repeatedly calls Israel the "occupying Power" and calls all Israeli administrative actions "which have altered or purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem," including Israel's Basic Law designating Jerusalem as its capital, "null and void" and calls for them to be rescinded.

It also calls on Israel to cease archeological excavations in Jerusalem – excavations which have repeatedly provided concrete evidence of the Jewish connection to the city.

The resolution then goes on to condemn what it calls "the continuous Israeli closure of the Gaza Strip." Notably, Egypt, which also shares a border with Gaza, was one of the six Arab countries that submitted the draft resolution.

It further refers to Hebron and Bethlehem as "Occupied Palestinian Territory" and condemns archeological excavations in Hebron. It refers to the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Rachel's Tomb by their English and Arabic, but not Hebrew, names.

This comes less than a week after all 100 US senators signed a letter condemning anti-Israel bias at the United Nations. In their letter, the Senators noted that "too often, the U.N. is exploited as a vehicle for targeting Israel," and specifically mentioned UNESCO. They noted that UNESCO "member states continue to advance measures that target Israel and deny the Jewish and Christian connection to Jerusalem."

On Friday, Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote that:
The Executive Board of UNESCO refuses to put a stop to the politicization that is impairing the organization's standing. Contrary to the recommendation of UNESCO's director-general and despite the promises and statements made in the past year by various leaders, UNESCO continues the ritual of proposing an anti-Israel resolution that criticizes every action Israel takes in Jerusalem, adopts past resolutions denying the connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, and recycles political condemnations against Israel concerning the Gaza Strip.
As the MFA also points out, statements concerning the sovereignty of Jerusalem are outside of the mandate of UNESCO, an organization that is "responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication."

The Trump administration is reportedly lobbying against the measure, as is B'nai B'rith. Meanwhile, Germany, which is on the UNESCO Executive Board, is believed to have led in the resolution's planning stages.

B'nai B'rith wrote on its website that,
A UNESCO resolution engaged … in the wholesale denial of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem would be absurd and grossly irresponsible. No other country's capital is questioned internationally, no other country has historically maintained Jerusalem as its capital, no nation has deeper roots in its capital city, and no prior governing power ever protected diversity, culture and basic religious freedom in Jerusalem as Israel has.

Letter to the Editor Jewish Star re: Front Page Article Mother Journeys to LI in Memory of Hallel

bs"d

Dear Editor of the Jewish Star:

re: Mother journeys to LI in memory of Hallel
http://www.thejewishstar.com/stories/mother-journeys-to-li-in-memory-of-hallel,13490

Thank you the article featuring Rena Ariel speaking recently at the Young Israel of Woodmere as a front page news item and for  raising consciousness.

Having lived in Hebron, let me suggest a broader perspective.

Hebron is unique in that the forefathers and mothers buried there have a living presence.  דברי רבותינו (ברכות יח, א-ב), שהצדיקים במיתתם קרויים חיים

The first sentence doesn't really do justice to the reality in Hebron and Kiryat Arba.

When you live in Kiryat Arba, near Hebron, you live with the unrelenting threat of terror. As Rina Ariel explained on Monday night at the Young Israel of Woodmere, living there's not for everyone.

Of course, this would be a perfectly normal and expected reaction and conclusion any normal being would have after hearing of the horrific trauma suffered by the Ariel family.

But living in Hebron and Kiryat Arba transcend what is considered normal and expected.

My personal experience leads me to strongly suggest that the children in Kiryat Arab do not live with unrelenting threat of terror.  In fact, probably they feel much safer walking around their community especially after it gets dark at night  than our kids do in our community and the parents are probably less worried if they happen to venture out on their own unescorted.  Just to get an idea of what it is like, I personally used to walk around the Kirya at all hours of the day or night as women in Boro Park walk around their bungalow colony in the Catskills.   Kiryat Arba is a closed community, at least when I was there in the 80's and all the neighbors were Jewish. Actually the freedom children had to walk unchaperoned day or night was a breath of fresh air.

Infiltration into the Kirya is a very aberrant,  and unfortunate lapse of security.

One lapse is one lapse too many with tragic consequences! Yes it must be addressed with determination and strength rather than with acceptance of it being a typical everyday occurrence.

Rena Ariel is addressing the lapse with determination and strength!

"There's so much terror", said Rena "let the children play" was not to suggest that since terror was so rampant, the kids should learn to live with the terror by being compensated with playgrounds. .

Rena's point was as follows:  Kids should not be exposed to terror. They should be playing in playgrounds.  It is the job of adults to make sure their environment is safe and terror free.  The 17 year old murderer of Hallel Yaffa hy"d was the product of Hamas education which to our discredit is tolerated in Israel and worldwide.  She is telling us that this particular act of terror did not come in a vacuum.  This is something that must be addressed and Rena was making sure that adults in the room heard and now they too were sharing her heavy burden to make sure that other children would never suffer the fate of Hallel HY"D.

Building playgrounds is our response to terror. The more they try to destroy our settlement, the harder we try to build our settlement.

I liked this quote from Rabbi Axelrod

That "this is a family we didn't know personally" is irrelevant, Rabbi Axelrod said, "because all of Israel is connected"

Yes... My comments: We share in the knowledge that Israel is allowing Jihad in the schools funded by UNRWA. Surely that is something we Jews in America can address in Congress especially in light of the fact America funds UNRWA and that Abbas is soon to be visiting the White House.  Surely the hate indoctrination taking place in the Palestinian territories is something that should not be ignored and perhaps Rena's presence in the USA was to see to it that it is raised while the negotiation in the White House is being held.

Rena's main objective is to perpetuate Hallel Yaffa hy"d life as it says BeDamyich Chayii.  She stands for, Song, Praise and Dance.  If the terrorist thought they succeeded to  extinguish the light of one child, the Ariels will make sure that the light of that child will shine that much brighter with playgrounds and educational programs servicing lots of kids to enjoy these programs... as Hallel Yaffa herself would have enjoyed.  With our help their Vineyard will expand in Kiryat Arba and with the help of the Loving Almighty, hopefully the number of children in Kiryat Arba will increase as do grapes of the Vine....... Invey HaGefen....keeping Hallel Yaffa's spirit alive...

Thank you for being partners with these important projects and the Ariel family.
