Postpone confrontation minimum 6 months: Security Cabinet Statement
Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA

To summarize:

#1.  The metal detectors (and according to reports this morning also all cameras) have been removed.

#2.  The technology that will replace the metal detectors will under the best of circumstances be installed in half a year.  There is of course the possibility that when a tender is issued for the system that a company that does not win the tender will appeal the decision and that this can drag through the courts for years.

#3.  In the meantime it remains unclear what - besides perhaps some prayers - will actually be deployed to fill the gap.

#4. Fortunately, for the leadership,  given the traditional Israeli attention span that can be measured in hours - if and when there is a security incident that exploits the security gap, the odds are good that the decision makers who endorsed the recommendations of the security experts - and the security experts - won't face serious criticism for facilitating the gap.

#5. Regarding Jordan:  Apparently the world accepts the assertion that Israeli diplomats do not enjoy the protection of diplomatic immunity.  Given that we have now established that Israel cannot rely on third parties honoring even the most fundamental commitments the Jewish state now is armed with the most intuitive explanation for rejecting any arrangement that involves a third party getting sovereignty over any area currently under Israeli control.

#6. Take note: the United States of America responded to this barbaric move by Jordan by facilitating Israeli capitulation rather than taking a vocal stand rejecting Jordan's lawless behavior.  Expect the same if, forefend, Israel agrees to a "fantastic deal" when it goes sour.

Security Cabinet Statement

(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

1. The Security Cabinet accepted the recommendation of all of the security bodies to incorporate security measures based on advanced technologies ("smart checks") and other measures instead of metal detectors in order to ensure the security of visitors and worshippers in the Old City and on the Temple Mount.

2. Until the implementation of the plan, the Israel Police will reinforce its units and carry out additional actions as necessary in order to ensure the security of visitors on the Mount.

3. The Security Cabinet decided to allocate a budget of up to NIS 100 million to implement the plan (over a time frame of up to six months) including an across-the-board cut as necessary, according to the plan to be presented by the Public Security Ministry.

The cost of the plan will also include financing for police personnel positions in accordance with the recommendation of the police.

"I thank President Trump for directing Jared Kushner and dispatching Jason Greenblatt to help with our efforts to bring the Israeli embassy staff home quickly. I thank King Abdullah as well for our close cooperation."
