Adar 5775 March 2015

Happy Purim to Everyone. Thank you for supporting the defense of the defenders of Israel and helping to unmask the villains and protect the heroes of the Jewish people.

...On the day that the Jews' enemies looked forward to ruling over them, it was reversed so the Jews rule over their enemies. (translation of Esther 9:1 from Chabad.Org site)

Purim is a holiday which demonstrates achieving clarity after confusion reigns. On Purim, people dress up to be different than their daily selves. They drink to the point of confusing "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordechai". During the whole month of Adar we celebrate the way things can turn around. This month we will bring a few examples of how things are so confused, examples of those who are attacked being detained by police and examples of those loyal to Israel being thrown into jail. Who are the heroes? We hope that the powers that be in Israel will take a sober look at who is protecting the country and who is destroying it. Honenu with the help of supporters works year round to defend those who defend Israel.

May this Purim turn things around and bring clarity, happiness and the victory of right over evil.

Child Treated as Hardened Criminal

Adi Kedar

Atty. Adi Kedar

Our society has gotten used to youth being treated as hardened criminals.
On the morning of Wednesday, February 18, a 14 year-old resident of Samaria was detained in a raid on the yeshiva which he attends in the Binyamin region and taken to the Department of Nationalist Crime in the Central Unit of the Yehuda and Shomron police where he was interrogated on suspicion of threatening Arabs. The detainee's father was prevented from being present at his son's interrogation, even though by law parents are allowed to be present at the interrogation of a minor child.
The police interrogators planned to keep the youth in remand overnight and bring him to court for a deliberation the following morning.
Honenu attorney Adi Kedar filed an urgent appeal with the Jerusalem Magistrate Court demanding that the youth be brought to a deliberation in the evening and then released from remand. The appeal was accepted and the youth was brought to a deliberation at the Jerusalem Magistrate Court the same evening.
At the deliberation the police requested a three-day remand extension for the youth, however Jerusalem Magistrate Court Judge Gioia Skappa-Shapiro ordered the immediate release of the youth to house arrest until Monday, February 23. Honenu attorney Erez Bar-Tzvi who represented the youth at the deliberation said; "The discriminatory and humiliating treatment of the Jewish youth by the Yehuda and Shomron District Police, beginning with the raid on the yeshiva in complete contrast to what is customary with other populations, and ending with the decision to leave the youth in remand overnight without cause, is disproportionately severe...We are astounded time after time by the conduct of the Yehuda and Shomron Police. We do not understand their motivation."

Who Are the Criminals?

On, Saturday, February 14 a group of young yeshiva students walked with their friends on Shabbat afternoon on Hagai Street near the Western Wall Plaza in the Old City of Jerusalem. According to the youths, Arabs attacked them with clubs and chairs. The youths attempted to defend themselves and apparently one of them sprayed tear gas at the Arab assailants. Policemen who arrived on the scene detained two of the Jewish youths and two Arabs.
Honenu attorney Rehavia Piltz arrived at the police station after Shabbat in order to provide the youths with legal counsel. At approximately 1:00 A.M. the youths were released, several hours after the Arabs assailants were released.

Prejudicial Treatment of Jewish Children

Givat Gal1 final

On the morning of Sunday, February 1, three brothers aged 9, 12, and 14, were forcefully detained during destruction of the walkway surrounding the Givat Gal hilltop neighborhood adjacent to Hebron, by personnel from the Israeli Civil Administration together with the police.
According to the family and eye witnesses to the detention, the three brothers were badly beaten. The arm of the 14 year-old was broken prior to the incident and the MADA paramedic who examined him after he was beaten said that the police may have broken his other arm. Despite the paramedic's concern the policemen refused to allow the boy to receive medical care and he was taken to the Department of Nationalist Crime in the Central Unit of the Yehuda and Shomron Police for interrogation.
The two younger brothers were taken to the police station in the Givat Avot neighborhood of Hebron. Dozens of Jewish residents gathered outside of the police station and protested the detention of the children.
Honenu: "Each time we are astounded again by how the police cross all boundaries. Children aged 9 and 12 were brutally beaten and detained, which is against the law. An Arab child filmed harassing a border policewoman in Hebron was not treated like this. This is a complete abandonment of all values."

Honenu is continuing its campaign to help the soldiers of the Cutting Edge operation this past summer. Tens of cases of investigation of soldiers for their activities during the war have been brought to Honenu's attention. Honenu anticipated this and during the war and after it, gave information packets about Honenu's services to soldiers.

Honenu needs your help. Honenu is handling more and more cases of civilians and soldiers who have become embroiled in legal complications due to the confusing pressures of those who don't have Israel's best interests at heart. Honenu also continues to help those whose loved ones were killed in terror attacks, get recognition as victims of terror. Honenu is a voice of truth in the public arena. Honenu provides ongoing advice and support to many families.
